The Barnum effect is a phenomenon that describes how people associate themselves or subjectively relate to the most common descriptions and they mistake it for an accurate reading. For instance if a querent asks the famous question ''how does he feel about me?'' she will likely relate to something along those lines''he thinks of you as an emotionally stable person,a confident woman who knows whats she wants, very compassionate and kind' Because we all want to be perceived in a good light right?Even if we know we aren't those things it is highly flaterring to think that the person of our interest thinks of us as someone WORTHWHILE. We certainly won't shout 'oh my good that's so inaccurate!' then perhaps the reader will say ''I feel there is some hesitation on your part on whether you want this relationship or not'' and the querent suddenly feels ''yes! there is! I feel unsure if I want to invest myself or not''and thus your reading becomes one of the most accurate the querent has gotten so far.

Anyways I was thinking about this and I would like to know what the expert tarot readers of LL think about it?

In the same line of thought I was wondering about this - when you pull a court card when asked 'how does he feel about me or how does he sees me'do you request the tarot a confirmation card for the description that you come up with? Like for instance you pull QoC, would you ask the tarot, does he actually see her as a loving person? Can we do that?

It doesn't apply to true Tarot readers. But many of the professional ones are charlatans who don't read the cards (or read palms) at all--they do cold readings, with the cards as mere props to add legitimacy to the scam.

I recently got a reading from a tarot reader. I didn't react when she pulled the cards, although I could see how she was sizing me up.She was onviously watching my reactions if I was familiar with the cards or not. Then she started saying things that would fit half of the female population, she could pick up a few things from me but nothing concrete, and yes she was a professional tarot reader and I had to pay her which kinda ticked me off.

Can you do cold readings online? What if I ask questions that pertain to the situation because I see them right on the cards, is that cold reading? I never knew what cold reading was, and now I understand it when I researched what Jessica posted.

I ask questions to the client or tell them things they don't tell me, but they are all right there on the cards even though I don't read Tarot like a lot of others do - the answers are always so clear to me and just jump out (due to many repeated combinations that appear over and over and over again in many readings). Some people lie even though it's clear to me what they said or did to that person, but they don't want to tell me the truth due to ego issues.

But is this some form of cold reading?

No, a cold reading is an intentional attempt to deceive. The cold reader makes vague generalized statements and then watches for responses. Sometimes the "mark" will also give info they don't realize, and then the charlatan will reword it back to them.

Ok, I understand completely now!! I recently had to pay 50 dollars for a reading, but she extracted all the information out of me from a 'survey'. Then, she completed the reading and took what I told her and just based the whole reading on what I had told her. I was so disappointed because what would she have said if I didn't mention anything I did to her?

Thank you for clearing that up for me, Randall

Yes. Basically they work on the psyche of the querent. If you are desperate for an appointment, or if you call like hundred times to get an appointment with them, they make as if they feel for you and they move you up on their appointment lists. They read a lot into your body language, the tone of the voice, how upset you look, how uncomfortable you look when they pull, say a female card if they are doing a love reading. People who are going through tough times or who are desperate to 'get back their husband' fall easily prey to these charlatans. If you so want love to come your way, they'll probably tell you someone has cast a spell on you and that if you don't do anything about it you'll remain single for the rest of your lives. yeah, nasty bunch of crooks.

I believe Tarot readings are real. This is more society b.s so we can focus on materialism and waste our souls and money on bullcrap while blocking our third eye chakra.
