Mirrors......
One can use black water color or tea even; in a dark bowl.
At Halloween dollar stores usually have such bowls.
Another way is spray paint the glass from a frame and put back in the frame; painted side to back.
Or go to a glass store and buy a black glass piece any size; even beveled.

In my experience the color of candles does not matter. The flame is the energy focus not the "dead wax".
Cheapo votive candles will do quite fine.
A safe and flame-less way to naturally divine from the "dark".....is to use the natural darkness of night.
Look out into the night with a light behind you.
Ever look at snow fall that way?
