Linda's very own special group for little girls (and little druids) who believe that mountains can fly. ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Isn't there a girl group called the Brownies? ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark IP: Logged |

Yes, I was in the Brownies. Brownies are pre-Girl Scouts, for little girls who are not old enough to be in the Girl Scouts yet. Heidi IP: Logged |

I was in the Brownies too briefly and it was while I was there that I discovered all about Saint Brigid the Druid. But I always wondered about the symbolism of the Owl in druidry... I just found out too that Ireland was the last place the Druids went to. Before that they came from Iberia, Egypt etc. Thats probably why the culture is still steeped in Druidism. Heidi even though I was a brownie for a little while I still didn't know why I was there or what it was all about. Did you wear the wee brown uniforms? Why is a brownie? All I know is how much we were taught about nature and how to be good and be prepared but it wasn't in the religious way. Something about being in the Brownies was to do with the Druids.

oops instead of typing why is a brownie, that should be 'what' exactly is a brownie. All that getting in touch with nature, getting badges for passing tests and becoming guides, hmmm that sounds like a sect almost! lol ok maybe thats a bit dramatic but I couldn't help as a child but feel that it was a mimic of something else and why when it was in the Parish centre was it not all about religion. My suspicious mind is asking questions again.IP: Logged |

Quinnie,I wish I knew what the Brownies represented. It was such a long time ago that I don't remember much about it at all. I remember making a Brownie Sit-Upon. It was a newspaper with some vinyl covering on it and your art scrawled across the front of it. I remember trying to draw a pony and it was so ugly that I cried. As far as nature and badges and what the whole thing resembled? Well, I was in one of the Beverly Hills Brownie Troops so if you want to see what it was really like ... there's a dreadful movie called Troop Beverly Hills with a lady who was in the TV show Cheers. LOL!!! And I'm not kidding either. I am ashamed to admit it but that's exactly what our troop was like. I'm sure people who were Brownies in other parts of the US were a little closer to your vision of what a Brownie was. I would love to know what the history behind the Brownies really is. Much Love, Heidi IP: Logged |

Ok Ladies how about Bluebirds ! Who here was a Bluebird and can we even remember why? It's funny I remember I was a bluebird and my Mom was the "Bluebird Leader," we had meetings at our house and I remember I thought that our dresses were much prettier than the Brownie's.....so much that I skipped Brownie's and went to Girlscouts Hmmmmmm??------------------ Love & Light, Melissa IP: Logged |

Yes, if I remember correctly those Brownie uniforms were pretty atrocious ... I think they were brown with a white blouse with orange girl scout emblems on them.I don't blame you at all! Heidi IP: Logged |

In England we have those girl groups and they're officially called 'The Brownies'and still are called that.I was in the Brownies and our leader, the adult that is, was called Brown Owl,so it is an official title for the leader in the Brownies in England anyway. I had to post this seeing as we are trying to probe some of the mysteries of Gooberz,so I doubt wether Linda dreamed that name up herself, perhaps she was either in a brownie group that had the same origins as the English brownies or read about the name somewhere or even heard the name from someone, maybe her Irish grandmother.IP: Logged |

You're lot are gonna think I'm nutz I was so fascinated by the mention of druids having something to do with the brownies that I've been trying to remember things we did(I was about six or seven)I've been looking out for and now found today 'The Brownie Guide Handbook'. It's got the story in the front about Brown Owl and why "the Brownie Guiders are called 'Brown Owl'after the wise owl in the woods" Here's a few lines from it "Oo-hoo-hoo,hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!"chuckled the owl.You see that pool down there.Go to the north side of it when the moon is bright and then turn around three times and say: "Twist me and turn me and show me the elf. I looked in the water and there saw....." '"To get the finishing word of the rhyme look down into the water and there you will see the Brownie, and her name will fill in the rhyme you want." It also reminded me that we were divided into groups called sixes Some of the names for the different sixes are pixies, elves, sprites, gnomes I remember we used to have a model of a toadstool and sometimes hold hands and dance around it. This is from the handbook 'All packs have something in the middle of the ring to remind them that it is a brownie ring, this may be a toadstool,a brownie pennant,a model of a pool or of a large World Badge'(don't know what that last one is) 'Some brownies look in a pack pool to see themselves just before they become real brownies'(from the book) IP: Logged |

Given this some more thought, pick up any book to do with children you'll find stuff that correlates with druid/magic stuff wont you?Pick up an Enid Blyton book,or a fairytale or even a little illustrated poem book for children. They're all magic, children ARE druids, take a look at the next little one you see.
