I think maybe Linda wanted to show a particular facet of Life and Love, not exactly all of it. If she had written from a mother's perspective, she might've alienated some of her male audience perhaps. Really, though, I think she probably just wasn't comfortable including her children when the book wasn't meant to be entirely an autobiography at all. It's a story that applies to everyone. Not everyone is a parent, but we can all relate in some ways to trying to rhyme sadness with gladness. Who knows? Maybe her kids asked her not to involve them since the book is so deeply personal, as well. I wondered that myself when I read it. As for Sam ... maybe Linda just wanted to keep something special and private for herself? Maybe including her kids in that privacy. When you really pay attention to it, though, she is very individualistic in her writing in Gooberz. I mean, she mentions her parents in passing but we don't really get to know them either. We know more about the loves in her life and herself and her search for Truth than anything else. And besides, maybe she incorporated a lot of Sam into other male characters, you know? ------------------ "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - Ghandi IP: Logged |

hii el...long time actually i quite relate to ur 1st line... i think the book was strongly on the lines of astrology although also "another kind of love story"...: so maybe she wanted to point out the soul transference theory...and al the soul union...maybe thats why and somehow i have feeling sam was someone who gave her.her much needed security and maybe maybe something like a protective figure...u know all normal and safe..nothing out of the ordinary...u know like the rest of her life... but in all how many kids did she have?? including the ones who passed away??IP: Logged |

If I recall correctly, she had 4 children who lived ... and 3 who, I think, were stillborn. ------------------ "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - Ghandi IP: Logged |

I might be wrong, but I think maybe one died soon after birth.------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark IP: Logged |

Linda mentions that Anne (with an "e") passes away soon after she learns to walk. ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark IP: Logged |

You're right, Randall, I recall reading that in Gooberz. It appears, from Gooberz, that all three lived and died shortly thereafter. However, I can't help but feel that I read somewhere about her having stillbirths. Sweet Linda, it must've been so hard on her, whichever way it happened. ------------------ "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - Ghandi IP: Logged |
