Goob n. A person who is being a nerd. Formed by clipping. Synonymous with the phrase "wet blanket." Used to describe a person who is being a nerd. Shortened from goober. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Goober n. A silly person. Formed by folk etymology. [Folk Etymology ['goober' is related to the Kongo or Kimbundu 'n-guba' meaning 'peanut']] A 'goober'is an individual that has a funny and crazy personality. The original term ‘goober’ was another name for peanut and is recognized by many Southerners. According to the American Heritage Dictionary ‘goober’ is a word borrowing from an African language and the term was brought to America by the slaves. ‘Goobers’ (peanuts) were one of the food items that was imported to America for the slaves to eat. A 'goober' may also be called a 'nut' (a crazy person) so this may be one hypothesis for the reason for using the term in the current context. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ goo·ber (gbr) n. Chiefly Southern U.S. See peanut. ---------------------------------------- [Of Bantu origin; akin to Kongo or Kimbundu n-guba.] Regional Note: Most Southerners recognize the terms goober and goober pea as other names for the peanut. Goober is related to Kongo or Kimbundu n-guba, "peanut." The word is especially interesting as one of a small stock of African language borrowings brought over by slaves. Most of these words have to do with the food items imported from Africa for the slaves to eat. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Noun 1. goober - pod of the peanut vine containing usually 2 nuts or seeds; `groundnut' and `monkey nut' are British terms goober pea, monkey nut, groundnut, earthnut, peanut edible nut - a hard-shelled seed consisting of an edible kernel or meat enclosed in a woody or leathery shell Arachis hypogaea, peanut vine, peanut - widely cultivated American plant cultivated in tropical and warm regions; showy yellow flowers on stalks that bend over to the soil so that seed pods ripen underground ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ancient Scottish verb "to goub"....dance manically while gurning.
