Yep Dogs are man's best friend alright. The Egyptians recognised their loyalty and significance also.
Their God Anubis had the head of a jackal! He was associated with the dead because the Jackal was seen prowling around the tombs and therefore was a protector of the dead and their records.
We are also talking in the Atlantis thread about the star Sirius being called the Dog star.
In some Ancient tombs there were paintings of what many see as Alien forms and alos spaceships if u like but I am way off topic here sorry!
Dogs are cool.

There are 4 best friends (3 Keeshonds and a Dachsund) sharing a home with my mom and I, not to mention 2 cats! Anyway...

I remember hearing an ancient story told from the American Indians about how the dog became "man's best friend". I may not be telling it all exactly right, as they did, but the jist of it is this:

Apparently, "in the beginning" when the Creator created the animals and the humans... on one side of a river stood man, on the other, the animals. It was asked of the animals "who will volunteer (or choose) to be 'man's best friend' throughtout all lifetimes?" and the dog was the one that jumped in the river and swam to the other side and stood with man.

WAIT...

I may have told that kind of wrong... or out of order... I think it was more along the lines of this (apologies):

a man fell in the river and the animals were asked "which of you chooses to save this human"... then the dog, without hesitating, jumped in to save the man... becoming his "best friend".

Yes, I think that's it!

Thanksso much for the story eternal. It's a beautiful story. I read some of the cat responses. I think cats are so mysterious and beautiful. Their very intriguing animals. I feel they have some mystical secret to them.

my German Shepherd dog "Dallas" passed
last july 13, hemangiosarcoma it is cancer. it was attached to his liver. it was a very fatal sort of cancer. it was one of the hardest things in my life was to have him put down. he was 9 and my very best friend. its kind of funny he came to me 2 1/2 years before my husband changed jobs and went on the road trucking. just long enough for him to grow big and intelligent. i never could of imagined me being alone all the time. i would of been so scared. he was my loyal proctector and my buddy. i had him babysat all day while i worked, my mom kept him and loved him also. i would go at dinner time everyday to see him and have lunch with my mom she is 5 min. from my work.
i would pick him up everynight at 5 and go home. we would then go for our 1 hr walk which was the best part of the day. to lose him was the part i really never thought of it
was the worst thing in my life to this day. i miss him so much. i hope to be with him again some day. i pray for this.

Goldielox512,

I, too, lost my Shepard girl to cancer and had to put her down. She was just 4 years old. It was one of the most devastating losses, I have ever had, maybe the most devastating. This was 4 years ago and I still miss her, but it's gotten better. I have her picture, with a little shrine of toys. She's been to visit me in spirit, but of course it's not the same. But I know I will see her again, when I go "home".

I found several (in other Forums). Which one are you talking about, Ra? Can you describe it?

Hey, has anyone ever considered the possibility of "forever" dogs? I mean, dogs don't kill, most of them have already mastered the art of unconditional love (or is it a science...), not to mention the fact that they CAN be vegetarians. I think it would be great if Lassie, or Mr. Whiskers or whoever your favorite furry friend is, could stay around and live in good health for a lot longer, if you get my drift. Just a thought.
