Tonight my landlord's brother-in-law chopped down the cherry tree that stood two and a half storeys high in the backyard, to the left of my third-floor balcony.

They said it attracted too many bugs that were infesting their grounds, and had to go. It is true that it was quite bug-eaten and bird-devoured, and probably had been neglected for many years... you can't do that with fruit-bearing trees, they need proper care and pruning to last... but it was almost three storeys tall!! It had a right!! It was blooming in a straggly way, and mainly had bunches of leaves like fingers at the ends of its branches but... but... it was too late to argue, and I didn't feel militant enough to go down and confront them physically.

So I said a silent prayer for the tree, and any elemental that may have inhabited it. Does anyone have a prayer or ritual to suggest to help put the tree, any elemental, and the local birds and squirrels to rest? I can arrange access to the stump. I think that if I can do something more, then I can accept this and let it go. But right now, I feel really small and sad.

Thank you,
Lunargirl

I'm so sorry Lunargirl, I don't know how to help you, but I feel for you and the tree. I hate it so much when trees are being chopped down, especially at X-mas, this mass chopping down pines is so pointless and cruel, and the poor things can't even defend themselves. It makes me really sad

This reminds me of a terrible travesty that happened here in Louisiana not but a few months ago.

Some developers were wanting to clear some land, to put yet another mini-mall (as if we need more). To do so, they would be chopping down a 300 year-old oak!! Everyone fought to save the tree, but in the end expanding civilization won, and the tree was cut. I still can't stop thinking about it.

I'm so sorry to hear about the little cherry tree, and all who inhabited it (spiritual & physical). But it will live on as being cherished in your memory, and if even one person did love it and remembers it, its spirit shall remain on.

This house is surrounded by trees (and we have woods behind us).

I've been told that, at some point, we're going to have to have the tree on the front lawn cut down. I don't want to lose it. Dad has already trimmed and removed the lower branches:

One of the trees I love to sit beneath:

I know that Lunargirl hasn't been here for six years, but I'll come back and post if I find such a prayer. I have a few books that I can look through for this type of thing, and a few friends who might have more knowledge in that regard.
