this year i decided to take the plunge and participate in http://www.nanowrimo.org . for those of you who have never heard of it, it's national novel writing month and the goal is to write a 50,000 word novel in a month (november). well, i only came up with my idea on november 1, so i'm frantically trying to write as i'm still developing the idea. haha. but really it's only important to get something out, not something good. anyway, i wanted to add in some oovy-groovy mystical elements, but it takes place in japan. most of the stuff that i know about has a western bent. i tried doing a google for "eastern mysticism" but pretty much all the results were christian groups who were anti-pokemon because of the "eastern mysticism influence". i'm at a loss here. what constitutes eastern mysticism? can anyone point me in some different directions?? loveloveloveIP: Logged |

Hmmm, where to start?OK, a lot of people around here love Osho, and there are many pages for him. Then there's the controversial Sai Baba whom I haven't read anything about. Daf brought up Yad Dashtan and Yad Kardan which are groovy mystic words which you could google. Um, you could look at zen sites, and koans. Koans are cool. Um, there's pokemon and astro boy. Maybe lookup the Dalai Lama and gurus. Yin and Yang. Waterfalls. Empyting your self from all material elements to become a void nothingness - maybe Neverending Story? Only the first one of course. Anyhow, let us know how you go! Dean. IP: Logged |

thanks. this is a good jumping off point for me and i think i'll definitely incorporate koans into the plot. i'm trying to create some sort of japanese secret society (a la "illuminati") to play the bad (or are they good?) guy in the story. so if you have any ideas that would lend themselves towards that, i'd be appreciative. but i think that the MC should get secret messages in the form of koans. that would be cool. loveloveloveIP: Logged |

Welcome cynicalpsychic Goodness, you must love a challenge. Sesame has given you a good start for your adventure . I am curious how a Japanese secret society will blend with the "illuminati" . I hope you can share the completed idea with us.Good luck ! IP: Logged |

Koans are good. Also Haiku, a form of poetic koan much loved in Japan. Haiku make, in my opinion, a very stylish way of delivering clues. Some links to get you started, since you have little time. http://www.pinehillzendo.org/mumonkan/ http://www.big.or.jp/~loupe/links/ehisto/ehisinx.shtml http://www.seanparnell.com/Hyperion%20Cantos/Web%20Pages/Ummon.htm The last one kind of covers koans and poetry. If you need or want more on eastern mysticism let me know. I have a large folder of quality favourites. Best of luck with the writing and let us know how it goes. Regards,

you should read stuff by alan watts....i know he is a western writer, but i feel he . he simplifies things...thus helping your western mind further grasp eastern philosophy.....IP: Logged |

There's a cool Haiku book by Dean Koontz called False Memory. It's more a sci fi than factual, but it was interesting IMO. Anyone read it?Dean. IP: Logged |
