he he..... quote: "How To Tell If Your Child Is a Potential Hippie and What You Can Do About It"A 1970 P.T.A. Parent Education Pamphlet by Jacqueline Himelstein Your son or daughter may be flashing warning signals that he or she will soon drop out of society and join the "hippie" movement. If you know what to look for, you may be able to prevent it.
Four leading psychiatrists, Dr. Jean Rosenbaum of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Dr. Jack Leedy of New York City; Dr. Robert Bussell of Chicago and Dr. Norman R. Schakne of Detroit, agree that a combination of the following signs spells possible trouble for the parent as well as the child... 1. A sudden interest in a cult, rather than an accepted religion.
2. The inability to sustain a personal love relationship -- drawn more to "group" experiences. 3. A tendency to talk in vague philosophical terms, never to the point. 4. A demanding attitude about money but reluctance to work for it. 5. An intense, "far-out" interest in poetry and art. 6. Constant ridiculing of any form of organized government. 7. A righteous attitude, never admitting any personal faults. 8. An increasing absentee record at school. 9. The emergence of a devious nature, manipulating people for personal gain. 10. A tendency to date only members of different races and creeds. "Naturally, some of these signs may be observed in perfectly normal adolescents, but it is when the majority of the traits are present that the child is on the way to becoming a 'hippie,'" Dr. Rosenbaum said.
"There are also the fairly obvious signs like shaggy hair and mod clothing. But those alone do not make a 'hippie.' Sometimes it's just a fad." Each of the psychiatrists offered advice to parents who are worried about the possibility of their child's becoming a "hippie." Dr. Rosenbaum: "There must be a reconstruction of the family unit, with much expression of love. Parents should work and play with these young people to show that all the family members care about one another." "There must be a great deal of dialogue -- sometimes very painful dialogue -- to establish a new position of belief for the young people. They will deny they're hostile until their last breath." "Until that underlying hostility is brought out, the children will be keyed to rebel." Dr. Leedy: "Family therapy is one ideal approach. Develop similar interests and hobbies. It's usually too late for the usual disciplinary measures when the child begins showing the 'hippie' signs. Discipline at that point might make him more hostile." Dr. Bussell: "Have a good understanding and be more tolerant. Adolescence is at best and extremely disturbing time." Dr. Schakne: "Learn to say 'no' when you have to. But explain your reasoning so that you maintain a communication link." "The time to shape your child is in the pre-teen years. When your child reaches the teen-age level, the die has already been cast."

OMG!! That is the most rediculous thing I have ever read in my life!!! What the heck is wrong with people??? 3. A tendency to talk in vague philosophical terms, never to the point. 5. An intense, "far-out" interest in poetry and art.
10. A tendency to date only members of different races and creeds. WHAT????!! Cuz those things are soooo terrible... ha! If those are ''signs that one is becoming a "hippie" ''... then I think all of us here at LL fit that bill!! IP: Logged |

I wanna know since when did hippies only date members of different races. Thats not true. Just because hippies dont discriminate against a persons color doesnt mean they refuse to date people of their own race also. Oh well, that little tidbit was for a good laugh...lol. IP: Logged |

New millenium hippies drive hybrid cars (but bicycle and/or carpool everywhere they can). They eat organic foods (and grow their own if they have land enough to make a vegetable garden). They favor family time over watching tv and playing videogames (they probably don't even have a tv, let alone a video game system). They might prefer to homeschool their kids. They likely make a lot of crafts (as a creative hobby and for practical purposes). They live as simply as they can. They devote plenty of time to humanitarian causes. They make a concious effort to take care of the environment. They recycle everything they can.An example of a great hippie place to live that supports this lifestyle is Boulder, Colorado. hahahahahh I'm sorry that 1970 PTA thing was hilarious!!!! They just didn't get it. I can't believe how ignorant they sounded. Yea especially that one about having a tendency to date other races!!! Yea definitely a sure sign of a misguided teenager, having love and acceptance for "others" or taking an interest in the romance of art and music and poetry. Man those hippies of 70's sounded like real dangerous deviants of society. Yea I know if it were the 70's, I would classify myself as one for sure. I love hippies!! When I think of a hippie, I think of really open minded, loving and peaceful with distaste for corrupt organizations in general and maybe a feeling of being an outsider of pop culture, but a lover of the people at large. Hmmm that sounds like me now... when did I become a hippy? All I need now is a hacky sack, dread locks and peace sign t-shirt, hehe j/k. Tigerlily, yea that is what I think of as a modern day hippie, good description What a beautiful lifestyle IP: Logged |

that reminds me of a "Car Talk" episode I heard where he's interviewing a guy who's traveling the country living in a restored old VW microbus - "So are you a 'hippie' then?" "Well I guess so, but I'm mostly a hick, so I guess that makes me a 'hickey'"Loved that it's me!!! nothing but an old "hickey" IP: Logged |

he he...56% "You are not a child of the 60’s but your heart is true to the cause, man. You realize that being a hippie is not just bell bottoms and tie-dye. It is also about the drugs and smelling bad, too!" guess i have a long way to go...but i don't think drugs really have anything to with authentic hippiedom...just the commercialized version. but i really do love patchouli...and i think i smell pretty good these days. might be a bit more unsure about the time a used a crystal deoderant stick though. i wish i could find a good one. that was cute ms. sparkle. My hubby uses Tom's All Natural Deodorant (unscented). It works well for him.I use it sometimes when I'm out of mine, but I prefer Dove deodorant because it's my favorite smell. Here's a list of the ingredients and their sources: http://www.tomsofmaine.com/toms/ips/BW-ND_ips.asp IP: Logged |

"I am 26% Hippie. Step away from the tie-dye. You smell too good to be a hippie and your dad is probably a cop. Being a hippie is not a fashion craze, man. It was a way of life, in the 60’s, man." Yeah man, I'm too young, man. Dean. IP: Logged |

oh i like tom's of maine products too...although for natural deoderant i really like 'earth science liken natural deodorant' with natural lichen plant...and it works very well! it has a scented and unscented version....and you might like the scented version as it's very soft and fragrant.i wish i could find a deodorant crystal stone that worked as well. those are great and last forever, but they are prettier than they are functional, at least for me.
