How are you this fine afternoon?/evening/morning?

I don't, FairyDust, but I love reading about gypsies. I went to school with a band (?) of them though, in Spain- they were really mean and smelled bad, but hey, it was neat.

What does one have to do to be a gypsie? Do you have to just have ancestors from Romany, or do you need to travel around in a wagon and have your palm crossed with silver too? I don't really fill either of those, so I guess I'm not.

Hi Fairydust, yeah I am from Romany Gypsies, my family who lived in England are called the Taylors and I met a Romany Gypsy here who told me of my ancestors. Now I KNOW why I wear large hooped earnings and a shawl (ha ha) xxx

No, most Gypsies are no longer nomadic. SueG - cool. I was just wondering if there were any others out there and if so, did your family pass down the language and traditions too? For many it was strictly forgotten and childern weren't taught anything...

Gypsies are an actual ethnic group, so yes, you do have to have it in your ancestory, but no, you don't have to travel in the Vardos (wagons)

I'm supposedly not, but I have my doubts. I've seen pictures of my grandmother's family and they looked like a bunch of Hungarian gypsy Jews. They claimed to be 100% German but she admittedly had a French grandmother??? She had a brother who was killed by gypsies - kicked to death in the kidneys - that would have been around 1910ish. Other brothers etc. were captured and shipped off to Russia or something on trains. For a while I thought my family could have been Jewish or something, but I hear that this was historically accurate that Germans were kidnapped and sent off to slavery via train. Yet I look at that picture of the family and they look more Hungarian (the farmhouse was in Hungary, but she proudly stated that the outhouse was in Romania)After the borders changed around, the area they were from was reclaimed as Romania. That part of the family moved around from Germany, Alsais Lorrain, Hungary, Budapest, then she came alone to the US.

As a child I used to think I was a gypsy fortune-teller. I still wonder.

Kat - that can be pretty common because a lot of Gypsies kept their heritage and culture a secret. Especially from that area and era.
