Esoteric Principles
Brett Mitchell

The purpose of life is the unfoldment of consciousness, the expression of our inner nature, and the revelation of our true being.

There are some essential and basic principles upon which esoteric philosophy is based. These are as follows.
First, it is postulated that everything in the universe is alive, from the tiniest atom to an entire solar system. All forms, and indeed all space, is infused with life. Each form is the expression of this indwelling Life and could not exist without it.

Esoteric philosophy posits that the distinction between organic life and inorganic life is an important one from the standpoint of form, but relatively meaningless form the standpoint of the life aspect. The death and decay of the form, and the breakdown of its organic components into the basic elements does not mean that the inner life has been destroyed, but merely that its mechanism for expression upon the physical plane has been disposed of and returned to the one source. The life goes on forever.

Second, that this Life exists and expresses itself through form in well-nigh infinite grades of being, from the vast and unknowable Life that manifests through a galaxy to the tiny life that is the atom. This establishes a basic dualism of Life and form, Spirit and matter, or positive and negative. All manifested forms are expressions of this Life, Spirit, or Being, and it does not matter if we are speaking of an atom, a human being, a planet, or a solar system. All are manifestations of this basic duality of Life and form, Spirit and matter, or Energy and substance.

Third, that in the interplay of Spirit and matter a third aspect appears, which is consciousness. This is the soul of all things, the Anima Mundi, the awareness the lies behind and within all form. Through the appearance of consciousness the many lives become grounded in matter and assume specific forms and shapes that represent and reflect their state of consciousness. A rock may represent a limited and inert consciousness, whereas a bird may represent a higher, more evolved consciousness. This is not simply because a bird is at a later stage of evolution than a rock, but because the indwelling consciousness of the bird is more capable of expressing itself through a form. This results in the threefold nature of all things at both the human level and the Divine. We call this trinity many things in many teachings:

Spirit, soul, and body,
Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
Positive energy, neutral energy, and negative energy,
Significance, meaning, and appearance,
Will, Love, and Light,
Experiment, experience, expression.

This consciousness is in essence a unity, a vast spectrum of awareness from the lowest to the highest. Each human soul is part of this vast spectrum of awareness and the consequence is that all souls are one with all other souls, and all humans are one with all the kingdoms of nature on the planet. All life expresses this fundamental unity.

Fourth, all of the myriad beings who express all the many states of consciousness are seeking fuller expression and the unfoldment of their latent potential. The whole process of evolution may in truth be called the evolution of consciousness, and this evolution proceeds in many inner realms, and upwards from the human to spiritual realms and kingdoms. The lower kingdoms of nature dimly but clearly express the consciousness aspect. In the human being, through trials and great effort, that consciousness aspect flowers forth as the spiritual soul. When that soul becomes dominant over the lower personal nature, then a still higher point of evolution is achieved, and we say that a great teacher, a guru, a Master, or an Arhat has appeared. Still further the process of evolution unfolds, still onward the growth of consciousness continues, until we can say that a great being such as the Christ or the Buddha has appeared. Their consciousness has broadened and expanded beyond the bounds of any human life. Even then, the process of evolution--which is in truth spiritual evolution--has not ended, and indeed it has no end. The potential of Life for expression in form is infinite.

Thus the purpose of life is the unfoldment of consciousness, the expression of our inner nature, and the revelation of our true being.

Fifth, everything in the universe manifests in a cyclic fashion. We can see these cycles in all things, from the turning of the seasons, the rise and fall of civilizations, and indeed the appearance and disappearance of all things.

In the human being this demonstrates as the Law of Rebirth, or the Law of Reincarnation. This beneficent Law provides each of us the opportunity for growth, for the unfoldment of our latent capacity, and for the working out of all causes. It is a positive, and not a negative Law, offering us the opportunity for liberation, if we so choose it.

Esotericism teaches that the Law of Reincarnation is wholly evolutionary and progressive in nature. An oak tree cannot be put back into an acorn, and in the same way a human being cannot regress to an incarnation in the animal state. Humans only reincarnate as humans. The process of evolution can be postponed, or even temporarily stopped, but it cannot be turned back.

Sixth, that the process of cyclic evolution has produced a few rare beings, lives, healers, and teachers that have gone beyond the human consciousness, who have unfolded all the potentiality of their souls, and who have unfolded a measure of the Spirit aspect and have demonstrated it by sanctity of living, endless service to humanity, and the manifestation of spiritual Light and Love. They thus constitute a fifth kingdom in nature--beyond the kingdoms of the mineral, plant, animal, and human kingdoms--a Kingdom of Souls. Their appearance is a part of the natural process of evolution, and is no more strange than the appearance of a flower or a tree. They are a part of nature just as we are and there is nothing miraculous about them or their existence; they follow natural laws just as we do.

These evolved individuals have, throughout the ages, formed a subjective group which, for lack of better words, we call the Spiritual Hierarchy. This Spiritual Hierarchy has many names in many teachings, among them being the Brotherhood of Angels and Men, the Inner Order, the Lodge on High, and the Inner Government of the World.

Seventh, that throughout history, various members of the Spiritual Hierarchy have appeared to humanity, and the result has been the appearance of a new religion, a new science, a new world philosophy, a new revelation of beauty or art, and sometimes even a new city, state, or nation. They work in all realms of human activity and should not be confined by our thought to merely the religious world.

Foremost among these appearances in recent history has been those of the Buddha, who demonstrated the energy of spiritual Light to humanity, and the Christ, who anchored the energy of Divine Love. Both the Buddha and the Christ belong not merely to their own religion, but to all humans of every faith and teaching. Both teachers provided the appropriate revelation for the time and place they were in, and both presented--by lives of example--the goal for human evolution.

Many other teachers, leaders, healers, and philosophers have appeared, some to great fanfare and wide recognition, and some to utter obscurity and death. Yet all continued one process of revelation--the revelation of the human soul and Spirit, and the revelation of the nature of God.

Eighth, that the members of the Kingdom of Souls, the Spiritual Hierarchy, are today present among humanity, but they remain unrecognized. They do not pronounce their status, or make claims of being initiates. They do not impose their ideas upon anyone, or demand any obedience except that of the obedience to one's own soul. They simply present the teaching, and adapt it to the time, the place, and the people it is being presented to. It is up to us to recognize them, perceive who they are, and cooperate as much as we can in their work.

There is an increasing awareness and perception among humanity, and the Spiritual Hierarchy is more present than ever before. A momentous event in world history is occurring in this day and age. The result is what we call "the externalisation of the Hierarchy" and the "reappearance of the Christ." This is an inner and outer process of revelation.

There is an inner reappearance in the hearts and minds of people everywhere. People are approaching their own souls more closely. Through pain and suffering and inner growth, humanity is growing towards the light. This process is and has been slow--painfully slow in many respects. But the process of unfoldment is sure and inevitable, and great effects have been seen in the world today. In addition, the souls of mankind are being ever more stimulated by the Spiritual Hierarchy and are making their impression upon each human being. The energy of the soul is strengthening in every human heart, could we but see it, and the result will be the transformation of the world.

Outwardly the Spiritual Hierarchy has and is in the process of externalizing, and is sending its representatives to humanity to carry the message of the one soul and the One Life, of unity and brotherhood, of sharing and cooperation, and of unselfishness and sacrifice. They work with little recognition or reward for the salvation of humanity. This work is but the beginning of an ongoing process of externalisation that started over the last hundred years and will continue for several more. The high point of this effort will be the reappearance of the Christ among mankind, in one form or another.

Ninth, that the process of evolution--both material evolution and spiritual evolution--is leading each and every human being towards the Kingdom of Souls, the Spiritual Hierarchy. All people are unfolding their spiritual nature, and the end result will be entrance into the fifth Kingdom of nature and the unfoldment of all the capacity and potentiality of the soul.

This process of transition from the human kingdom to the spiritual Kingdom of Souls operates under natural laws, and these laws can be known, understood, and followed. When they are followed, our evolutionary process is speeded up, the soul makes its presence ever more felt in our lives, and the result is the revelation of the Life aspect within the human being--a transfiguration of the soul that unfolds the Divine nature within each of us, and sets us free.

These propositions form some of the basic ideas of esoteric philosophy.
