Anyone find the spiritually in Chess? Anyone want a game? You can visit http://gameknot.com and sign on and have up to six games simultaneously without cost! This isn't an advertisement, I just think it'd be cool to play someone from Lindaland - kinda intimate like. Anyone game? If you are, you can select to start a game, and then choose who to look for for a game - I'm sesame at this site (pun intended ). Hope to see someone there, but you know, it's all good if no one wants to play. I only have three more free games yet for now, but if you win five games you can play in a tournie starting from the 7th of November, which isn't too far away.Heaps of Love, Dean. ------------------ Always think compassion... HOLY Synchronicity!!!!!!!!Last night, my husband and I were talking about chess.... He doesn't know how to play, and either do I.. and we were going to google and see if we could learn how somewhere..... and then get a beautiful chessboard. He mentioned Backgammon too.. and I said I thought I'd heard somewhere it was a sort of divination game originally... or at least, derived from it. ( much like playing cards in that way) How interesting that both should be mentioned the next day! Just wanted to share. IP: Logged |

Oh neat!Yeah, I learned chess when I was really young, and grew tired of it. I think that for some reason it's popularity makes me like it less for some reason. Backgammon is a fascinating game. Elements of logic, strategy, and luck intertwine to make it quite an interesting game. I kind of wish the gambling element of it (The doubling cube) was removed, because it can stop the natural progression of the game. When playing casually most people aren't aware of what the doubling cube is there for. It was interesting to find out that some of the professional poker players are experts at backgammon. Chess is popular?I love chess, and find it fascinating on different levels, including spiritually. Don't know what you peeps see in backgammon. To me it's all about winning through vindicativeness. I also liek Go, which is a Chinese game and very strategic like chess. That;s very spiritual to me, but I rarely get to play it because I have noone to play it with. Playing it online isn't the same. Wow Pixie, that's great! I'm currently reading "A Complete Idiots Guide to Chess" which explains all rules PROPERLY, and then goes into a lot of the strategy. It's well worth the time. It's a great game that I think is underrated. Has everything. I never really got into it, but I'm at a point where I've realised I have no hobies and this one fits me. It doesn't involve moving my body or leaving my house I do want to exercise more but was never really good at sport.IP: Logged |

AcousticGod, yes, love BG too, but I don't like the chance aspect. I was once losing miserably and ended up winning based on a few dice rolls. I thought the double cube either was only to choose who started, but why not use the other dice? Can you explain the other uses please?IP: Logged |

Gemini Nymph, apparantly it's growing in popularity. I think people still feel geeky, but women seem to be getting into it more. There's a book called "Chess B!tch" which is about female players. Chess does have a lot of levels.Dean. IP: Logged |

Hi Dean, I used to play chess in my college days. I am no expert but do know the rules quite well. Its been quite a while since I played. I may join if I find some time over next few days. Hope there will be a free game left Hi AG, I love playing backgammon too. A greek american had taught me.
Did you guys watch "Beautiful Mind." The guy invented game theory and basically said who ever rolls the dice first in the game usually wins. He used to teach in Princeton, 20 miles from my place

Sesame,Let's see. Well, big time backgammon players decide on a point total for a match. Depending on the win, a different amount of points are awarded. For a standard win in which each player is able to remove tiles from the board, one point is given to the winner (toward the match total). For a ... Let me just cut and paste. It may make more sense the way these people are explaining it: Doubling: Backgammon is played for an agreed stake per point. Each game starts at one point. During the course of the game, a player who feels he has a sufficient advantage may propose doubling the stakes. He may do this only at the start of his own turn and before he has rolled the dice. A player who is offered a double may refuse, in which case he concedes the game and pays one point. Otherwise, he must accept the double and play on for the new higher stakes. A player who accepts a double becomes the owner of the cube and only he may make the next double. Subsequent doubles in the same game are called redoubles. If a player refuses a redouble, he must pay the number of points that were at stake prior to the redouble. Otherwise, he becomes the new owner of the cube and the game continues at twice the previous stakes. There is no limit to the number of redoubles in a game. Gammons & Backgammons: At the end of the game, if the losing player has borne off at least one checker, he loses only the value showing on the doubling cube (one point, if there have been no doubles). However, if the loser has not borne off any of his checkers, he is gammoned and loses twice the value of the doubling cube. Or, worse, if the loser has not borne off any of his checkers and still has a checker on the bar or in the winner's home board, he is backgammoned and loses three times the value of the doubling cube. ----\ Make sense? So the doubling cube is the most obnoxious bullying tool ever. If your opponent offers to double the stakes you either accept his/her terms or forfeit however many points are currently on the table. I don't like that aspect. IP: Logged |

Philbird, that'd be Awesome. Who's the black king? I guess Burns and Smithers is the Queen? What's jousting? Is that for spots in a lift?IAT, moves range from 3 to like 14 days per move, so we're talking a long time per game My current three opponents each make their moves relatively quickly, and pretty aggressive too I think it'll be OK though You can view my current games here: http://gameknot.com/show_games.pl?id=sesame . There are still three games left I don't think I'll make this tournie. It's a really cool site though - every four games you win means you can play another simultaneous game with a maximum of 12 without cost. At one move every three days, that's like four moves a day IP: Logged |

IAT, games are one move every three days, so they last a while. Thanks for the info AG, so why does the double dice go up in doubles? Is it just because it's the double dice? Dean. IP: Logged |

The doubling cube is simply there to keep track of the stakes of the game, so it always stays off to the side.IP: Logged |

Hey guys, so I just realised the Australian Chess Championships 2006 are coming to Brizzie = http://www.ozchess2006.com/ . Anyone interested? The last time it was here was 1963. I'm going to try to get to a mini tournie this weekend to see if I stand any sort of chance. The thing I love about chess is that every decision is made on the spur of the moment. Sure you can analyse sequences and memorise variations, but for amateurs it either comes down to experience or pure thought. I think anyone could play effectively. One of my ex-girlfriends beat me all the time (at chess). But I think while reading this book I've come to understand more of the motives behind really good moves. Anyway, just thought I'd share.Dean. ps. for me, the spiritualiy arises from the choices and style of play everyone has. This is individual unless you treat it as a business and memorise everything. The chain mail I'm talking about is the armor created for under the jouster's outer garb. It was made up of linked pieces of metal and weighed a ton. IP: Logged |
