well, I think one way to increase good karma is to live by the rules of dharma..see below...as for bad karma being returned to you, it is something you instictivly know is happening and it really almost cleases you to know it is done, which while going thru things is hard, it feels cleansing to know it has been repaid and living by dharma rules creates good karma for the future. just my thoughts..

dharma: Patience (dhriti), forgiveness (kshama), piety or self control (dama), honesty (asteya), sanctity (shauch), control of senses (indraiya-nigrah), reason (dhi), knowledge or learning (vidya), truthfulness (satya) and absence of anger (krodha). Manu further writes, "Non-violence, truth, non-coveting, purity of body and mind, control of senses are the essence of dharma". Therefore dharmic laws govern not only the individual but all in society.

The purpose of dharma is not only to attain a union of the soul with the supreme reality, it also suggests a code of conduct that is intended to secure both worldly joys and supreme happiness. Rishi Kanda has defined dharma in Vaisesika as "that confers worldly joys and leads to supreme happiness". Hinduism is the religion that suggests methods for the attainment of the highest ideal and eternal bliss here and now on earth and not somewhere in heaven.

Wow sxycrzykewl221, that was one detailed answer! Welcome BTW!

Peace, I love your questions. For this one, I would say bad and good are completely subjective. They are both experiences that bring you to who you are. The point of this never ending battle is to determine where you want to go. If a certain action doesn't take you there, then consider it bad and don't do it. If you do do it (and watch out because Santa won't have any presents for you), then simply start the process again. Unfortunately, we don't always know which path will lead where, but just know that they will all lead home.

Why try to fight fate? Why not dismiss it and create your own?

Dean.

Thank God, some talked about Dharma. I have come across a zillion discussion on Karma, which is totaly skewed! Without Dharma, there is no Karma per se.

Karma = actions
Dharma = responsibilities

Did you learn?
Would you do the good thing again without expecting reward for it? Would you stop doing the bad things? Are you ready to put closure on the cycle of payback..and eye for an eye..a tooth for a tooth? Even though you want revnge?
If you keep making the same mistakes and keep insisting on paybacks...then you will keep adding to your debt.
This is not about balance. You cannot do a bad deed here and then a good deed there and think it leaves you with a neutral balance...
Not so.
The good deeds and the bad deeds are tallied separately one could say. Or..you cannot buy your way out of a karmic debt....no matter how many good deeds you do...unless it is ending the cycle of payback. That does not mean doing another "payback"..that means resisting the urge to invoke karma upon another deserved or not. Ending the cycle means ending it by not acting upon it. Their debt will be paid, but by Karmic law..Or God's touch...not your hand.
That means also...the giving of aid to those you may not like, not to only those you do like. That is one of the tests.

Well said, Fayte. I liked that little reminder. I enjoyed what everyone else shared as well.

Hi Peace,

I am reading a discourse on these days. According to Sid (for Siddartha, his real name) as I would call him, some people have lot of good karma and when they do something (or feed their karma with negative ones) those people experience a slight setback but are right back on track. One good example I remembered he gave was its similar to adding a small amt of salt to a river than adding it to a small glass of water. In the latter, the whole water becomes bitter.

Also according to him good karma can be developed by being mindful of what we are doing. Being alert and awake and not reacting in a condescending way to the events in our lives. Sid as well as Jesus kept saying repeatedly , "if these were not true, I wouldn't have told you so.(paraphrased)" That really makes me think.

Anyway more on that when I am at the end of this amazing book called 'Wings of awakening.'

*edited later* This does not mean that karmas are interchangeable. You have to experience the bad karmas may be in ur current life if you are lucky (according to me because i feel its bad to accumulate bad karma) or may be next life which I don't think I wud like to, because I wud not like to be born on this earth again.

Bad karma can be removed by pity by someone greater than us all. Do you rememberthe story of how an unclean woman in the crowd touched Jesus and Jesus felt some loss of energy in him that time. Not sure if i am explaining well but yes someone greater that us can partake of our bad karma.

I am not being judgemental about calling the woman Unclean. But as far as I can remember, her menstrutaion wud not stop for 12 years hence the reference to her by those people in that era. Hmm, hope my memory is right.

Partial quote:
Bad karma can be removed by pity by someone

Yes...and understanding and acceptance of a person depite knowing of that person's
error(s).
The thing is then, if, from that point....
to paraphrase Jesus(Yeshua/Issa)...
Go forth and sin ye no more......

So anyone who can accept and love you and understand the whyfors of what caused your errors(s)and help YOU to understand the reasons for your doings, and help you forgive Yourself....
Is helping to negate the effects of "bad" Karma.
PS.Your bit about Sid was "right on!" Mannu!

Hi Faye,
Hope you have been doing well.
Interesting reflections on 'sin no more'.
Also, I was thinking about you when I was reading that when Buddha got enlightenenment, he recollected his innumerable past lives, he went thru the pains and pleasures of that recollection. Appears that everyone can recount past lives when they reach that stage. What is surprising is that Buddha came out from that trance to tell his story.
Hmmm...when will my time come to recollect my past lives. Hehehe...

It is all quite simple. Because IT IS ALL IN YOUR MIND! Yeah, the soul, despitye whatever good or bad you do is unaffected, but the mind is where it all lies. So long the mind detaches itself from the soul, there is no salvation. So the key is to tame and control your mind.

Thank You Mannu!
Good and bad body days as usual. But many new epiphanies and eurekas, and a purging of some childhood baggage, I was not aware of being such a ponderous, yet insipidly influential invisible monkey on my back. So yes, doing fine, Life is good.
Ahhhh...when will you remember your past lives?
When you are ready to learn from the lessons they would teach you. When you are ready, they will bloom up from deep within your soul, and surface into your mind/dreams/visions etcetera, as relevancies arise in your doings in this life.
Bless you my friend.
PS:
Quote:
he went thru the pains and pleasures of that recollection.

Ahhh...so true it is...the pains and pleasures! BOTH aspects must be revisted to fully remember and understand the ways in which they apply to the nows of ourselves.
Which again is much as that quote I have posted before but will repost again here as it seems to suit this matter well.

~~~Jesus said, "let him who seeks continue seeking until he finds. When he finds, he will become troubled. When he becomes troubled, he will be astonished, and he will rule over the all."
Jesus said, "Recognize what is in your sight, and that which is hidden from you will become plain to you. For there is nothing hidden which will not become manifest."
From "The Gospel of Thomas"
And this lovely quote I heard from(I think) Iqhunk:
Greatest Sin?
To abuse after knowing that there is no punishment for abuse.
Greatest Good?
To do good even after you know that there is no return from doing so.
