I am moving into a new apartment and starting graduate school in a week. My undergrad years were not always the "happiest," and I want these to be different. I was wondering if there was anything I could do or bring into the apartment to bring good luck!

Thanks in advance guys!

How about you bring only things that bring you happy memories and reminders of your accomplishments?
When I was young my mother expected only A's and only put my report card on the refrigerator one time... my final year of high school when I rebelled and got my one and only D. I finally was able to look past these memories and find value in grades again, as an accomplishment to myself. I put each of my straight A report cards on the refrigerator, and leave them there until I replace them with the next one. Right now my "desk" has many symbols of my accomplishments and reminders of my daughter that keep me positive and focused when school seems overwhelming.
A 'feng shui' Google would also give you some interesting new ideas that you can sift through and implement as needed.
I would love to offer more, but other than HGTV (and their web site), that's all I've got! Hopefully this will get the ball rolling for more interesting responses on this topic!
Good "luck"

Place bed so that your head is facing south and leg facing north while sleeping. Because your head is north pole in the body and must be aligned with south of the earth to get good sleep.

Here in Ireland we used Brigids crosses to protect our homes..

We had one hanging on the door of our outhouse for a while and then I noticed it had fell off.....within weeks that part of the house burned down....

Salt is also very good....a ring of salt around the outside of the house and white light of course...and horseshoes are lucky....

First of all, dont google up feng shui tips. Most of them are totally crappy and have no authentic backing.

Secondly, it's always best that the first object you bring into the home is something which represents fond memories and contains numerous positive vibrations. Example, a comfortable chair you love to lounge on, framed photographs you cherish..etc etc. This way you're bringing love as the first thing you enter the home with

An ancient remedy is that one shouldnt ever bring old broomsticks or old cleaning implements to a new home, as they carry the negativity and the bad memories of the prior home. So spring some cash on new brooms/mops/cleaning fluids etc etc.

In the bedroom, make sure the furniture and other objects have no sharp edges, as they would cause irritable sleep. Mirrors shouldnt be facing the bed, and neither should windows. If the later is the case, invest in some nice curtains. And make sure your bed isnt beneath a ceiling beam, as that's another cause for nightmares, as it blocks out the chi. Colors like blue/lavender/violet are best for a bedroom.

That's all i can think of at the moment. If you wish, I can look up more information for you. I can also share with you a home cleansing ritual which you can perform.

Hi SR ~

Have you considered runes?? You can make your own -- pictures that you've drawn or talismans that you've made..... the following is from Lisa Peschel's "A Practical Guide to the Runes":

Interps for the 26 Nordic Runes can be found at my favorite astrologer's website:
http://www.stevenforrest.com/runes.html

And Ralph Blum wrote what many consider to be THE book on runes. I have his interps scanned if you wish to pursue this angle

Hey Scorpio Rising.

Here are some more tips to follow while doing your bedroom:-

- Make sure that your bed and the door of your bedroom are not facing eachother.

- Along with sharp edged furniture, make sure furniture isnt angled in such a way that they appear to be pointing to the bed. It's always best to get furniture with rounded soft edges.

- Don't put the TV/Computer and anything similar in the bedroom. It robs it of all intimacy, as well as, creates chaotic energies.

- Do not try to place an aquarium or water/liquid filled object in the bedroom, as well as, paintings or artworks with "water imagery". This is BAD Feng Shui. The reason being that the bedroom is supposed to be a place for resting (yin) and water being a potent energy source, both give out extreme "yang" energies.

(NOTE: Some feng shui disciplines even state that plants should be avoided in the bedroom, however, incase of protruding corners, a nice potted fern is best placed there, provided it isnt in the same line as the bed, and isnt too large, and especially has rounded leaves. You know, it's best to avoid plants completely .)

- In case you have a chest of drawers in your bedroom, keep it on the opposite side of the room from the bed. In case it comes with an attatched mirror, try either avoiding it in the bedroom entirely, or place a thick silk cloth on top of the mirror whenever you wish to sleep or relax. However, it's always best to keep the chest of drawers in a seperate changing room, if you have the space for one.

- On entering your bedroom, note where the windows are located. Chi tends to travel between the door and any windows, so avoid positioning your bed in line with this ‘draught’ of chi.

- Position your bed so that you can see the door from where you sleep. This gives you a deep sense of inner security.

- If it is feasible, position your bed as far away from the door as possible.

- Avoid sleeping with your head close to a window as your chi will dissipate through the window and make you feel more tired on awakening.

- If you have a bathroom, toilet or shower leading off your bedroom, make sure that the toilet door is always shut while you are asleep.

- To help you protect your own chi while you are asleep, to internalize it and recharge it, make sure you have a strong, stable headboard. Chi energy enters and exits the body through the feet, hands and the top of the skull, Having a solid ‘mountain’ behind you while you sleep is far more beneficial than a cold, blank wall or worse, the cutting chi of an ornate brass bedstead.

(NOTE:- make sure that the headboard isnt an arch or a convex mound shape, as that is the symbol of a coffin/deathbed)

- If you sleep with another person, note the position of your bed relative to the wall that it is up against. Is it equidistant--in the middle of the wall? This is vital in a relationship as it gives both individuals who share the bed equality in the relationship. A shared bed crammed into the corner of a room, is giving more freedom of chi to the individual on the open side whereas the partner will literally and symbolically feel up against a wall.

- If you sleep with another, make sure your bed is symbolic of this relationship. Beds that are rickety or likely to fall part speak volumes about the state of the relationship.

- Given that the bedroom is a more yin environment, the lighting that you choose needs to reflect this. Soft lighting is ideal. Avoid having ceiling lamps right directly over your bed.

- Place something beautiful that inspires you where you first look in the morning.

- Pay attention to what is under your bed. Keep the space clear and get rid of any unwanted items there.

Feng Shui Tips For Health

- The most basic rule regarding health is to make sure that your home is healthy. Keeping it clean, organized and beautiful is the best way to attract positive, healthy 'chi' into your space. The energy in your home needs to be free-flowing and smooth like a river.

- Keep your home in good, functioning condition. Do not allow anything to linger in a state of disrepair. Replace anything that is old, broken or faded. Repair peeling paint, cracked walls and ceilings and leaky faucets. Be sure that all windows are in good working condition.

- Keeping a green or earth element candle burning in the east as often as possible is an excellent way to energize healing energy. Candles also create an atmosphere of serenity and help to sooth and calm the emotions.

- Eliminate all things in your home that you no longer use. Pass things along to friends or donate them to charity.

- Work towards eliminating all clutter from your life. Begin to look honestly at why you tend to accumulate so much un-needed stuff.

- In the study of Feng Shui, toilets are a huge concern. Always keep toilets and bathrooms exceptionally clean. Keep the lid on the toilet closed at all times when not in use, and keep the bathroom door closed at all times. (Now you men should understand why we women nag you about not putting the toilet seat down.)

- The bedroom is an especially important room when it comes to health, since this is where we regenerate and heal during sleep. Keep the bedroom clean and uncluttered, with a simple decor. Do not bring work into the bedroom. Laptops, phones and exercise equipment are not welcome here.

- Electronic devices such as TVs, clock radios, answering machines, and electric blankets emit electromagnetic fields that can harm your health. If you must keep any of these in the bedroom, be sure they are at least six feet away from your body, or twelve feet, in the case of a TV. Always cover the TV with a cloth when it is not in use, especially while you sleep.

- Never place your bed on a wall that has a toilet on the other side. This is considered a health hazard in Feng Shui.

- In the bedroom, avoid sleeping under sloping ceilings and bookcases or shelves. All of these are oppressive and can aggravate problems such as headaches, restlessness and insomnia. If this type of architecture is unavoidable, a windchime with a horizontal bamboo mounting can help to redirect this oppressive force.

- Do not sleep directly under a beam. If this is unavoidable, hang a pair of bamboo flutes or a bamboo windchime with hollow tubes from the beam.

- Energize the wood sector (east) of your home with lush green accents, such as pillows, rugs, or window treatment. If the east sector is the living room, dining room or any room other than a bedroom, this is a great location for a beautiful potted plant. (Live plants are considered too yang for the bedroom ). In an eastern bedroom, use solid wood furniture as well as green accent colors.

Color And Feng Shui In The Home

It helps to choose the colors you plan to live with in your home with awareness of how different colors affect your emotional and physical states. Every color has a unique vibration all of its own, and this can significantly affect how you feel in a room.

Using this simple chart, you can choose a room's color to be in balance and harmony with the role you want a room to have in your and your family's life.

Red: A room that is painted red will energize, inspire activity and movement, help passion, be powerful and stimulating. A red room can also be exhausting and overpowering, and stressful for those who are anxious. Pink is less demanding. Choosing a red bedroom would not be restful, although some red can be used to enhance sensuality. A red exercise room would be energizing! In Feng Shui red means luck.

Orange: Orange rooms encourage happy, joyful, social gatherings. While an orange dining room or family room can stimulate the appetite, it is a great choice for such gathering places. Orange enhances parties, communication, positive feelings, and general good cheer.

Yellow: Yellow rooms inspire intellectual clarity, organization, clear headed articulate thinking, and happy energy. Yellow is considered a color for the logical left side of the brain. Yellow is also very bright and somewhat energizing, so one needs to choose its placement with care. A yellow office might be intellectually beneficial, but not allow restful downtime, for example, so one might want to choose to include yellow accents instead of painting each wall yellow.

Green: Green rooms are very restful but combine with an energizing quality. Green is the color of outdoors, calm and active at the same time. Green brings balance and harmony, healing, and rejuvenation to a room, and can be used as a calming place for people who are troubled or in need of refreshment.

Blue: Blue rooms are often chosen for bedrooms and meditation rooms because its cool energy is very calming, restful, peaceful, and spiritual. Blue helps inspire a quiet meditative quality, and color therapy with blue has been found to reduce blood pressure. Blue is also useful to soothe one to sleep.

Purple/Indigo: Purple is very comforting, protective, spiritual, and calming. It is a rich color which inspires faith, intuition and trust. Entire rooms painted purple could be overpowering, but a light violet could provide a very healing and calming atmosphere.

White: White rooms work anywhere combined with accent colors. White is very purifying, uplifting and cleansing, although too much white can reflect a sterile, isolating quality. White ceilings are recommended because they reflect light and brighten any room.

A ritual to perform to cleanse your house upon your first night there. If possible, during a full moon period. It is advisable that you repeat this ritual every solstice and equinox, as well as, whenever things seem really down.

During the day, physically clean the house, make it completely spic and span. Leaving no corner dusty, and make sure everything is in working order. Then at night we perform the ritual.

Assemble the following things on a table.

- A bowl or flat dish of Rock Sea Salt.
- An incense burner (censer)
- Frankincense (or Sandalwood) incense sticks, cones or powder.
- A white candle
- A bowl of clean, pure water

Light the incense and the candle. Stand before the table and open yourself to your home. Feel its energies. Really tune into any impressions you receive.

After a moment, hold your hands over the assembled tools and say something like the following (feel free to improvise, it's your house, hence it's your chant)

"I charge you, tools of the elements,
To sweep my house clean of all ill and bande.
This is my will, so mote it be!"

Take the dish of salt and, moving clockwise around the house, throw a pinch of salt into each corner of every room, saying the following (or similar)

"By the powers of Earth, I cleanse this house!"

Visualize the salt burning away all negativity as your sprinkle and toss it. Your purification will be as strong as your visualization.
Also throw pinches into cupboards and closets, through open windows and doors, into attics and basements, and in the garage.

Next, set the salt down and pick up the censer. While the incense smokes, cary it on the same route you used with the salt. Holding it before open windows and doors and in the corners of each room, visualize the smoke clearing away all the negativity and evil. Say the following (or similar) at regular intervals (even chant if you wish)

"By the powers of Air, I cleanse this house!"

Once you've walked through the whole house, return the censer and take the lit candle on the same route. Again, visualize, moving clockwise and holding the flame before windows and doors, seeing it shining forth with magical power, burning away negativity. Every so often say.

"By the powers of Fire, I cleanse this house!"

Finally, replace the candle on the table and take up the bowl of water. Sprinkle water throughout the house, in every corner and at exits and entrances. Toss some drops at and through the windows. See and know that water is washing away ills with a tidal wave of magical power. Say the following (or similar)

"By the powers of Water, I cleanse this house!"

Set the bowl on the table and stand for a few minutes in the house. It should feel calmer, more peaceful, fresh, and clean. If not, repeat the ritual, strengthening your visualizations and belief in it.

Close all doors and windows, and if time permits, leave the salt, incense, water and candle together on the table, till the candle burns itself out, and the incense reduces to ash.

A Lemon cleansing ritual for every full moon.

When the moon is full, completely peel nine lemons using your hands alone. As you finish peeling each one, place the peels in a bucket or large bowl of water.

Next, gently squeeze the peels into the water, espressing their oils until the sharp clear fragrance of lemon hangs heavily in the air. Visualize the lemons' powers cleaning your home of negativity.

Next, still visualizing, scrub the floors, doorknobs and windows with the lemon water. Pour a little of the remaining water down each drain. Repeat this every full moon.

*~*~*~*~*

Whew, that's a lot of typing. I hope this helps.

If you wish for more, do lemme know. I'll see what all i can fish up for you.

Wow, I'll be moving soon too and I'm going to use this info!

Mannu, my friend asked me last week which way was best to lay her newborn so he would sleep better, my answer was the opposite way than she was laying him down now, but I'm going to pass on your suggestion.

Not my thread but thanks guys!
