Dragonflies are following me around. Not just in their phsycial form either. I saved one recently from being eaten by my neighbors cat and helped him recover from his injuries in a shoe box. He died though. Also on my cell phone, I have a calendar and each month the picture changes randomly and this month featured a dragonfly. What does a dragonfly mean symbolically? Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks. IP: Logged |

Oh wow I just came across this:Dragonfly: Dragonflies symbolize illusion, dreams, change, enlightenment, irresponsibility, unreliability, weakness, instability, swiftness, dreams and seeing the truth. They are messengers of the elemental world and the god/esses. They are connected to Summer. Gave me shivers!!! I've had a lot going on in my dreams recently ~ I posted a couple of things in Astral Realms. I also am also working on myself a lot, and trying to BE myself more and less worrying about what other people think. I'm also figuring out what I want from life and basically weeding out what is hindering me and what is helping me accomplish my goals, as I have huge plans for the future. I still need more info though.... this is amazing. IP: Logged |

Oh and by the way before all this happened I decided I wanted a tattoo and I chose a dragon fly ~ I think I may get it now. lol I just found this: Dragonfly is a magical totem, signifying our ability to transform ourselves as we travel our path of self knowing toward enlightenment. Its iridescence and shifting colors lift us into dreamtime, where we understand that "reality" is the illusion. Our visions are channeled through our unconscious mind, ever connected to The Great Mystery that is Life. Dragonfly reminds us to celebrate Spirit in all living beings. This Nature Goddess is surrounded by lotus flowers, eternal symbol of the simultaneity of cause and effect, calla lilies, the most feminine of flowers, and has vines and flowers growing in her hair. The golden flowers signify the divinity of her true self, as she emerges from the waters of her unconscious mind. It is said that Dragonfly was once Dragon, covered with beautiful, shimmering scales and wielding great inner strength. It could change form at will, and light the darkness with the fire of its breath. Coyote tricked mighty Dragon into changing form and believing itself to be tiny Dragonfly. Because of pride, Dragon got caught in its own illusion; just as we, because of ego, are forever accepting our facade as our true selves. Too often we believe our failures, our shortcomings, and our limitations are real. We have forgotten that we too can change form at will, wield great inner powers, and can light our darkness with our faith, hope, and determination. When Dragonfly enters our lives, it is time to dig deeper, lift the illusion of suffering and believe in our limitless divinity.

Hi SunChild ~ The following is from Medicine Cards. Looks like part of what you found above is from these cards as well! Here is the full interp. of them:27 - Dragonfly: Illusion Dragonfly medicine is of the dreamtime and the illusionary facade we accept as physical reality. The iridescence of Dragonfly's wings reminds us of colors not found in our everyday experience. Dragonfly's shifting of color, energy, form, and movement explodes into the mind of the observer, bringing vague memories of a time or place where magic reigned. Some legends say that Dragonfly was once Dragon, and that Dragon had scales like Dragonfly's wings. Dragon was full of wisdom, and flew through the night bringing light with its fiery breath. The breath of Dragon brought forth the art of magic and the illusion of changing form. Then Dragon got caught in its own facade. Coyote tricked Dragon into changing form, and the shape of its new body became like Dragonfly's. In accepting the challenge to prove its power and magical prowess, Dragon lost its power. Dragonfly is the essence of the winds of change, the messages of wisdom and enlightenment, and the communications from the elemental world. This elemental world is made up of the tiny spirits of plants, and the elements air, earth, fire, and water. In essence, this world is full of nature spirits. If Dragonfly has flown into your cards today, you may have forgotten to water your plants. On another level, you may need to give thanks to the foods you eat for sustaining your body. On the psychological level, it may be time to break down the illusions you have held that restrict your actions or ideas. Dragonfly medicine always beckons you to seek out the parts of your habits which you need to change. Have you put on too much weight, or have you started to look like a scarecrow? Have you tended to the changes you have wanted to make in your life? If you feel the need for change, call on Dragonfly to guide you through the mists of illusion to the pathway of transformation. See how you can apply the art of illusion to your present question or situation, and remember that things are never completely as they seem. Contrary Are you trying to prove to yourself or someone else that you have power? Are you caught in an illusion that weakens your true feelings or minimizes your abilities? If so, you may have contracted "Dragonfly dive-bombing." Is this the final "crash and burn" for some pipe-dream that had no real purpose? Look within and feel the sense-of-self energy within yourself. Notice if it is ebbing, and find the point in time when you were deluded into believing that you would be happier if you changed because someone else wanted you to. Misery is a prime clue that you lost your will and personal vitality when you bought into someone else's idea of who or what you should be. The illusion was that you would be happier if you did it their way. In forfeiting what you know is right and true for you personally, you give away your power. It is time to take it back. Follow Dragonfly to the place inside your body where magic is still alive, and drink deeply of its power. This strength belongs to you. It is the power of becoming the illusion. This ability is every changing, and contains within it the knowledge that you are creating it all. Overview - Confront denials. Break through illusions. Honor inner truths. *Source: Sams, Jamie and Carson, David. Medicine Cards P.S. Dragonflys only live for 24 hours! ------------------ `Who are you?' said the Caterpillar. This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, `I--I hardly know, sir, just at present-- at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.' ~Lewis Carroll IP: Logged |

Thanks Hexxie... By the way ~ How do dragonfly's only live for 24 hours? The one I found who was injured lived for 4 days in a shoe box while I fed him little bugs while resting him in a bed of grass. I googled it and apparantly they live for about 2 months as an adult. The one I found was really big! Thanks for the awesome info. IP: Logged |

Hhmm you're right SunChild! I had gotten one of those e.mail forwards that said that dragonflys lived only 24hrs. That is apparently wrong! I have since learned (because of your post, thank you) that: "The dragonfly spends most of its life as larvae, spending 1-3 years underwater. Flying adults have a relatively short life span. If lucky, they can survive for six or seven months in warm and dry climes. In the UK adults rarely live for more than a few weeks."this had some neat stuff: http://www.dragonflydream.com/dragonfly.html Q: How long do Dragonflies live? Is it true that they only live for one day? A:At the shortest, a dragonfly's life-cycle from egg to death of adult is about 6 months. Some of the larger dragonflies take 6 or 7 years! Most of this time is spent in the larval form, beneath the water surface, catching other invertebrates. The small damselflies live for a couple of weeks as free-flying adults. The larger dragonflies can live for 4 months in their flying stage. In Britain, lucky Damsels seldom go more than two weeks and Dragons more than two months. Most Damsels rarely go more than a week, and Dragons two or three weeks. They die from accidents and predation, and large numbers from starvation - in poor weather neither they nor their prey can fly. No insect has a lifespan of only one day - even mayflies (not closely related to dragonflies) live for several months underwater as larvae before emerging as winged adults. Adult mayflies may only live for a day or so as they are dedicated "breeding machines". They cannot feed as adults as (most) don't have any functional mouthparts. http://www.dragonflysoc.org.uk/frameset.htm?faq&faq ------------------ `Who are you?' said the Caterpillar. Many moons ago, I saw a ladybug covered in silk hanging from a spider's web. I knew it was futile, because the spider had probably already injected its venom and was slowly sucking the poor ladybug dry. But I tried anyway. I took a stick and scraped off the web. I was shocked at how easy it came off! The ladybug didn't move at all as I scraped off the web. I just figured it was paralyzed, but the ladybug was just being a good patient to my "bug doctoring." Once I got the last piece of web off, it flew away! I was so happy! Now ladybugs fill my bedroom each year. It's kind of nice. ------------------ "There is no use trying," said Alice; "one can't believe impossible things." "I dare say you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. Hey guys! I REALLY wanted to scan a photo I have of seven dragonflies all lined up in a row, on a branch over a lake. They were mating. However, my scanner sucks! Maybe if you google dragonflies mating, you can get an idea of what this photo looks like. Wow! Seven of them in a row though! I'll quick check google... Ok, kind of like this but horizontal and seven in a row! Cool! IP: Logged |
