That's a good reminder T -- many of us women give our best to others and forget to give our best to ourselves..... Zala IP: Logged |

Nice Hippichick. Maybe that can be Corollary I to the golden rule. Interesting that you posted this because I was thinking about posting a thread on the golden rule. My question was, the golden rule is pretty much the take home message of almost every major religion, it's slathered across every religious text from the writings of lao-tzu to the new testament. If its so widespread, and if everyone knows that its a good thing, why is the golden rule so hard to follow? Even for people that claim to be very spiritual and religious? I find nothing more disheartening in this world than the hypocrisy of certain religious institutions. Religion should be built on love and peace and tolernace, yet so often across history (and now) we see religion being used as a weapon to harm, persecute, destroy, which goes against the very principles of most religions. Even satanism doesn't advocate the kind of violence seen carried about by various institutions. IP: Logged |

BlueroamerI suppose no coincidence that I read your reply AFTER watching The Davinci Code..... I am not quite sure why it is that people of professed religions find it difficult to follow the teachings of their chosen path. I think maybe fear and insecurity may have something to do with it....Deep-seated throughout evolution of the human body we are programed with self-preservation methods--physically the fight or flight response, emotionally and mentally a "save me" kind of thinking. I think we as humans act/react with fear and self-preservation on the forefront of our minds. It takes someone willing to transcend the limitations of the human condition to treat others as though they would want to be treated--with the utmost respect and basically unconditional love, and traditional religious practices--as you have so beautifully stated are hypocratic at best. This is not the time for me to get on my anti-organized religion soapbox, but it seems to me that organized religion in itself is quite self-preservatory!! I once had a friend who stated his two passions in life were Christianity and patriotism. I challenged him on this as he practically foamed at the mouth to return to Afghansitan to shoot the Taliban (who had shot him)---how "Christian" is that? He said he lived by the Bible and as far as he was concerned the Bible was the only book to read...I asked him why he had a copy of The Koran in his truck. I could have given him multiple examples of how he condradicts the teachings of The Bible in his speach and actions each and every day....But I choose not to go there. Yes, hypocricy at it's finest! the Golden Rule implies the basic assumption that other people would like to be treated the way that you would like to be treated. The alternative to the Golden Rule is the Platinum Rule: "Treat others the way they want to be treated." The Platinum Rule accommodates the feelings of others. The focus of relationships shifts from "this is what I want, so I'll give everyone the same thing" to "let me first understand what they want and then I'll give it to them." http://www.alessandra.com/about_platinumrule/about_platinum.asp IP: Logged |

Yeah I agree with Petron. My sister has this habit of giving gifts to stranger and I didn't like that because others may be intimidated by that gesture. IP: Logged |

PetronI like platinum much better than gold anyway!!!! From a woman's perspective, I think we treat ourselves less than good, at times, so energetically we attract people, especially men, that treat us in the way we are used to being treated---like crap!! I see your thought behind this and like the perspective! Terri IP: Logged |

I see a problem with the platinum rule...what if peopel wanted to be treated badly? Is it then ok to treat them that way? Moreover, how on earth are we to know how other people want to be treated?Conversely, the same problem goes for the golden rule, if we want to be treated badly does that mean we shoudl treat others badly in following the rule?
