What a great topic, Silverstone! Some detectives use this term when trying to simplify or get a start on some cases-whittling possibilities down to the simplest denominator, then building from there- i am interested in others opinions as well- LUV Tuxedo meowIP: Logged |

It's a very useful theory.Interesting that you'd post this in universal codes, where most people believe the most obscure, abstract, least plausible theory is the explanation for events. Are you trying to tell us something? Sometimes this thinking can lead to looking on the surface too much. Sometimes obvious explanations are tempting but aren't unfortunately, aren't always correct. I agree simply wanting to hear comments... ------------------ The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep. ~Robert Frost IP: Logged |

good one, Mannu lol quote: It often happens that the best explanation is much more complicated than the simplest possible explanation because it requires fewer assumptions. In light of this, the popular rephrasing of the razor - "The simplest explanation is the best one" - can lead to a gross oversimplification when the word simple is taken at face value.
quote: The supreme goal of all theory is to make the irreducible basic elements as simple and as few as possible without having to surrender the adequate representation of a single datum of experience" ~ Albert Einstein
Perhaps Einstein meant that statement with verbal emphasis on the word without: The supreme goal of all theory is to make the irreducible basic elements as simple and as few as possible without having to surrender the adequate representation of a single datum of experience" ~ Albert Einstein What a difference One variable might make, if taken into consideration. I think perhaps the appeal of Occam's Razor is the long saught after, yet ever elusive Unified Theory. There is such beautiful symmetry in the Universe, it appeals our senses to imagine how intertwined All may be into ONE simple connecting chord. I believe the real potential harm with any theory, whether it may be simple or more complex, is if it is taken as the ultimate final conclusion, leaving out any future potential openness for newly considered or discovered variables. As we could review from history, what we most always believe we know is merely setting the stage for the next mind-blow. Unfortionately people seem to often use Occams Razor on each other. Danger, Danger...or recipe for disappointment anyway, for people are far more complex than the simplest theory would reveal. What's got you wondering about Occam's Razor, Silver? Not taking your post at face-value

it makes me think of all The Doors..in between everthing, even if we simplify, there is always another door to open. ... to infinity and beyond, muhahahah
