This is really fascinating - I've never really given this any thought whatsoever, but it's rather dazzling to see it presented this way.
I certainly thought this was enlightening. Didn't even realize we knew much beyond our sun It's a big universe.
Antares is the 15th brightest star in the sky. It is more than 1000 light years away. When multiple Hollywood types were asked 'What is the purpose of life?" many gave the usual answers, to do good etc. Garrison Keeler (Prairie Home companion) said the purpose of life is to Glorify God. So it is with this amazing comparison of bodies in the universe. Our significance comes not from our size but that God created us to glorify him. The universe is so vast it is not comprehensible by the human mind. It would be like an ant trying to understand the wonder of the internet. It can't be done. The universe humbles us, as it should.

we're a speck upon a speck!Wow...how amazingly enormous are some stars! I wonder if the nutrinos and solar energy that they emit reach us, if even thousands or even millions of years later?

Whoa! I had no idea we are that tiny a speck in the Universe This makes me think of that song, "Dust in the Wind", by Kansas. Thanks for sharing that Mirandee. IP: Logged |

Well done Blue very appropriate, perhaps you should by a larger monitor to view these pics? I found them quite insignificant on a 14 inch screen too.. but I have also found that the men I have known with BIGGER appendages tend to keep it to themselves - better the element of surprise than the sense of bitter disappointment! Great article!!! I first saw the picture in the LA observatory that was just reopened. But that stars comparison was cool.
Creation is not just for us to glorify God. It is a chance given to each and everyone to be cocreators. It is to bring perfection in the world that is around us. This world we live in is not perfect. Global warming is a side effect of industrialization. But we will learn and we will conquer one day. One day we will have engineering skills to make Mars green. We may be behind but we are getting there. If a flower blooms before spring comes it will wither. If a fig tree refuses to give shade in summer, that fig tree is living for himself.
We will get there by caring and by sharing. By asking questions. Imagine a day would come when no one would hunger for a day. That day is the paradise right here on earth. The poor don't have to live as poor always. Cheers. Love. Mannu IP: Logged |

Blue, I love when you refer to the magnitude of your penis. It's so refreshing. quote: Now let's think about Global Warming. Is it possible? We are so small, in such a vast Universe. ...
Lotus, Curious here.....Are you implying 'Global Warming' is a joke or something? I understand that there have been cyclical differences over the years, just natural earthly biorhythms, but surely you can understand that some of the industrialisation of our world has made some unfortunate changes in our climate? It makes sense... not just to speculate about, but with sheer data.. it makes sense.
Scientifically.... black attracts heat, white repels it. Fact, right? So deisel particles on the very tippy tops of mountainous regions where there has always been snow.... of course, white in colour....to repel the suns rays.. all of a sudden more black builds up from the particles in the atmosphere..... the black would attract heat, and then melt the snow. It's not rocket science, just simple science. What sort of proof would appeal to your sensibilities? This isn't a political agenda, it's an earthly reality. It's true we are small, and it is a vast Universe, but that does not mean we are without consequences. You are usually the first to discuss consequences.. The smallest ant can have a large impact on the food chain. It is usually the smallest adaptations which prove the most integral to the whole. IP: Logged |

Global warming is the OBSERVED INCREASE in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans IN RECENT DECADES and its projected continuation into the future.Let's think about that, it's an observed increase done in recent decades...so how how could you base any conclusions on a few decades? the Earth is tilting, shifting, slipping off her Axis, I think this is the reason for climate change, the Earth has moved, is wobbling, because of the many negative forces put on her... I still believe we need to stop pollution and change industry poisons, etc....we need to heal our Earth... but is this Global Warming? I think not! Atlanits had reached it's peak of technology, did they have Global Warming, 10,000 years ago? Just my thoughts. ... LOve and Respect for ALL... . IP: Logged |

Colossal - let me see - derived from and in direct comparison to the statue colossus a one time wonder of the world - reknowned for its size and grandeur. But it's also famous for the fact it was fundamentaly flawed in design and crumbled after a very short life.... Just how far does your comparison go Blue? I must say your member seems to have us intrigued! well done, you should be very proud. IP: Logged |

Mannu, I love what you wrote here. Although I think that just our existance and the existance of all in the universe glorifies God and I think that is what is meant in the statements above. All that IS gives glory to the creator. What amazes me every time that I see our planet in comparison with all the other known planets and the stars is the sheer beauty of this planet which becomes invisible in the vastness of the infinity of the universe. Earth looks like an oasis in the darkness of that universe. Earth is beautiful looking at it from space. We are the caretakers of this fragile and beautiful planet. We are as mannu said co-creators. We do need to take care of this planet and stop polluting it for the sake of corporate profit and our own greed.
