I have great respect for hinduism religion but some times they just stretch things too much don't you think

=====

Technically, Abhishek would be Aishwarya's fourth husband. Earlier this year, the manglik actress reportedly married a pipal tree in Varanasi, a banana tree in Bangalore and a god in Ayodhya in order to avert the effects of 'mangal dosha' on her marriage.

As a consequence, she invited the wrath of feminists and even a PIL. But even as the doe-eyed beauty prepares to wed a human being now, other manglik girls in the city are consulting astrologers for similar orthodox remedies.

There is a sudden rise in manglik rituals after Aishwarya unknowingly became their brand ambassador.

Two Maharashtrian girls, a 22-year-old psychology student and a 28-year-old bank employee, who recently approached astrologer Vipul Saxena, opted for the Aishwarya treatment.

"Both of them married pipal trees before their actual marriage," says Saxena. Though he reveals that marrying a tree is considered the most effective way of nullifying the effects of 'mangal' (presence of Mars), Saxena was surprised to see these "modern" girls bothering about planetary positions and traditional beliefs.

To ward off ill-effects, the girl is usually advised to wed a tree, an animal or a god. This ritual is called the 'kumbh vivah'.

Though some of the dramatic remedies tend to depend on who the astrologer is, there are rituals that almost every manglik girl endures, like special pujas, wearing specific gemstones, reciting the Hanuman chalisa or Ganesha mantra and visiting temples.

After the Aishwarya episode, Saxena says that he has also been getting calls from concerned parents asking intricate questions about the rituals.

This is actually not far from the Judeo/Christian scapegoat principle (I understand they are all derived from the same roots anyway. The tree is the scapegoat, as Jesus was scapegoat, that takes on the badness and frees you

yeah, i hated the way abhishek-aishwarya wedding happened. I suspect the influence of the father-in-law though- never thought Amitabh Bachchan would prove to be so ultra-conservative. Aish and Abhi pretty much follow the dictates. That's my feeling anyways.

Not that Amitabh being superstitious can be condoned, but well, he belongs to a different generation. Nearing 70, isn't he? I just hope this disturbing trend doesn't continue.

You know, I would've prefered that she marry the tree as a substitute for Abhishek.

But on the real, I don't know if I find it disturbing as I'm not as familiar with Indian Culture as ILWL is. But I gather from the article that it has some Archaic and Sexist Implications.

*edit* What I find annoying is that since Ash has done it, marrying a tree is all the rage and now every other girl wants to do it.

But I could see why people would be disturbed, my culture does have its own disturbing past rituals that I know some people still practice (even though some have been bad enough to be declared illegal).

Dulce

Actually, it does have sexist implications. i have never heard of a guy being made to go through all this if he is a 'manglik'. it is always the girl who can bring bad luck to the guy girls r given a hard time by parents of the guy for silly superstitions like these.....

Now, would her having a LARGE number of hard aspects in her birth chart have anything to do with her being a "manglik"? Sorry, I'm learning here.

Before everyone decries this "superstitious" behavior, one must make efforts to understand what might prompt it, to be fair. There are reasons behind everything, and just because we may not know or understand it, it isn't right to label it as negative or superstitious. Hinduism, particularly, is one of those religions that gets a bad rap for such reasons, and this is rather unfortunate.

Now, I don't know about this 'manglik' factor or what it means (oh, i see.. is it just an afflicted Mars?), but I have heard of people performing these sorts of marriage rituals for certain reasons. If their natal chart shows high probability for divorce or multiple marriages in their future, they would perform this sort of marriage ceremony with an inanimate object, then break it to symbolize the divorce, so they can go on to marry the person of their choice without having to worry about that marriage ending. I don't know if it works, but I have heard of several folks doing it.

Now, for the copycats out there doing it, *sigh* ... i guess a philosophy has no value unless a movie star gets behind it. That's how Yoga & Ayurveda & Feng Shui all became so popular - some high profile person gets into it, then the crowd decides to follow suit. How very original!

ok, what i *think* i am against :

1. someone else telling someone what to do (i have seen a lot of interference from in-laws in these matters...esp from the guy's family)

2. how mostly it is the girls who end up performing these rituals (along with a lot of fasts for the long life of their husbands...ever heard of a hindu fast where the husband prays for the wife's long life???)

3. how people (esp girls) are labeled as 'unlucky', how a girl's whole life can be screwed up if she is a manglik and cannot find another manglik guy to marry.

there might be some logic behind the rituals, but what i dont like is the society's attitude towards them.

ILWL, i agree... society sucks... When it so strongly favors the male, it totally sucks, and when the girl is forced to do something against her wishes...

Here's hoping that things change; modern women are less willing to go along with what our parents/ancestors did, so here's hoping!!

I third you guys! I hate it when society favors the male.

But I will stress that I find nothing intrisically wrong with the ritual of marrying the tree itself, I just gathered from the article that there are some Sexist Implications (the feminists' uproar).

that is why i was wondering if he was a maglick also but if he is, as well. i don't get it.

I know I am maglick, i have mars in my 12th house. i will post about maglick here but somewhere else i read that if one spouse is a maglick and the other isn't, the maglick will be domineering.

anyway - here is the information from http://www.astromandir.com/manglik.html:
Whenever Mars is situated in 1,4,7,8,12th house of a lunar chart is is called a "Manglik dosha, Kuja Dosha, Bhom Dosha or Angaraka Dosha, Manglik Dosh".

So if you were born on a Tuesday do not worry for you are not a manglik (Mars dominated native) as said by some Astrologers. mars in any other fiery sign, also if in addition to Mars there are planets like Saturn, Rahu, Ketu in the above mentioned houses then also manglik Dosha is rendered ineffective.

So remember there is no such term as Double Manglik. It is a term coined by charlatans for their own benefit. mars in own house or in exaltation will considerably reduce the ill effects of the Manglic Dosha.

Mars represents Self Esteem, Respect, Energy and Ego in a native. If manglik Dosha is there then it can make a native's temper volatile. Such natives have troubles adjusting with spouse and can sometimes become ruthless.

Mars dominated natives have a tremendous fire like energy and if this energy is not utlized in something constructive then the above related prblem arises. manglik Dosha generally affets the marital life. Effects of Mars/Mangal in teh houses are as follows:
Mars in teh 1st house (Ascendant): It will have a drishti on (i.e.) it sees the 7th house. 7th house being the house of spouse Mars will create quarrels on even minor issues. Here it indicates physical violence and sexual abuse. Because of cruel behavior such a native will be despised by society. Will not be able to gain assets.

mars in 4th house: This house also represents happiness. This also affects the work area. Will frequently change profession and jobs. Will not be economically successful. No job security.

Mars in 7th house: Here it causes great anger. The native possesses extra energy. Will never be sexually satisfied for the partner will not be able to match such a native. Therefore it is possible that the native has a lot of partners or has an abnormal interests such as domination, fetish bondage. Also will have differences with family members.

Mars in 8th house: Loss of paternal property and bad relationship with the elders of the family. Will be lazy. Here brothers will also not help. Will vile away the time and will expect the spouse to earn.

Mars in 12th house: Sudden financial losses are indicated in this house. Lot of enemies and the enemies will always trouble such a native. Will have lot of mental problems and anxiety. (ding, ding, ding on financial losses and anxiety)
you have to get a vedic astrology reading but other than that - here is a little bit of information on maglick

according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manglik
Mangal Dosha is an astrological condition that occurs if Mars is in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the Vedic astrology lunar chart. A person born in the presence of this condition is termed a manglik.

This condition is believed by some to be devastating for marriage, causing discomfort and tension in relationship, leading to separation and divorce, and in some cases, it is believed to cause untimely death of one spouse. This is attributed to the "fiery" nature of this planet. If two mangliks marry, the negative effects are believed to cancel each other out. However, Mars is not the only planet in Vedic Astrology that is supposed to affect the relationship and these effects should be seen in a broader perspective of overall astrological compatibility.

There is also a belief that the negative consequences for a single-manglik marriage can be resolved if the manglik first performs a ceremony called a kumbh vivah, in which the manglik "marries" a banana tree, a peepal tree, or an icon of Vishnu.[1] However, this belief is also seen by some as perpetuating untouchability, contrary to India's constitution.

I see your point, and it's a good one, but just to clarify, Jesus is the Lamb of God, not a scapegoat. There's a vast difference between the two. He's not a rabbit's foot either.
