A university professor challenged his class: "Did God create everything?" A student replied, "Yes." The professor continued: "If God created everything, then He created evil too. And since our works define who we are, then God is evil." The class became silent. Suddenly another student raised his hand and asked, "Professor, does darkness exist?" The professor responded, "Yes." The student replied, "No, sir, darkness does not exist. Darkness is just the absence of light. Light, we can study, but not darkness. In fact we can use Newton's prism to break the white light into many colors and study the various wavelengths of each color. But you cannot measure darkness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present." Then the young man asked, "Sir, does evil exist?" Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course." To this the student replied, "No, evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. It is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness, a word that man has created to describe the absence of light. God did not create evil. It is the result of what happens when man does not have God's love present in his heart. Evil is like the cold that comes when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes when there is no light." The professor sat down. The young man's name was Albert Einstein.

I have posted that before also.
By the way, I do like that story.
Even though untrue.

It is however an URBAN LEGEND

There is another quandary to consider from a logical viewpoint.

If we go with the mythos that God created us, and then that we are created in God's image;
And then ignore God, thereby acquiring evil, then God did indeed create evil, by creating a species in his image who were able to comprehend evil.
Even going by the mythos, the so called fallen angels were created by Lord.
Which leads back to another argument concerning Lord not being the actual creator God, because how can one say, let US make man in OUR image....without considering who is the Us and OUR whom God or Lord is speaking to as Equals, NOT as his creations.

Then of course,
if we consider the words in the Bible said to be Lord's words;
Then The LORD himself admits to created darkness and light
and good and evil,
and sending evil spirits from himself into folks as he did to King Saul.

Cute tale but a hoax or URBAN LEGEND.

Urban legend or not, it is a nice one

'Evil' arises out of the illusion that we are all separate, fear and the desire to control.

To hurt another is to hurt oneself. Do we desire joy or pain?

It isn't something which can be understood by thinking with the mind. You have to use your other centers of perception- your heart, feeling deep inside the core of your being.

We are all inter-connected; all of life and nature.

Evil is simply being disconnected from this......

disconnected from

LOVE

But I guess no-one will ever get what we are really saying until they 'tune in'.

I wonder what helps a person tune in....inside themselves....the empathy, the memory

that suddenly awakens?

No, I have not seen the movie.

Are you implying that just because I pointed out that the story was an Urban Legend, that I do not "get it"? I understand very well the moral of the tale.

I wasn't quite sure what you meant as regards to 'evil', but I was speaking of the world in general, in particular those I wish to change who get away with murdering millions by using the word 'evil'...."axis of evil"

I wish I could get them to 'tune' in, but I guess we must let the uni-verse unfold as it will and trust in the 'Great Spirit'.....we'll be guided where to go.

I love the levitating smilie!

Thank you!

Sadly evil is a misused word/concept, and too many in the political/religious arenas do indeed use that word for any and all who disagree with them, or follow another philosophy and or religious way; to justify murder around the planet.

26taurus!
Yes indeed! A "who" is a great addition!

Great thoughts, ladies!

Question- Do you think the great 'Infinite' can protect us from evil if we ask?

Nice story, true or not. But then, what is truth but our own. We bring forth onto the world, what the world is to us.

Instead of answering.... i'll post some thing i read yesterday.

quote:
Ego is no more than this: identification with form, which primarily means thought forms. If evil has any reality - and it has a relative, not absolute, reality - this is also it's definition: complete identification with form - physical forms, thought forms, emotional forms. This results in a total unawareness of my connectedness with the whole, my intrinsic oneness with every "other" as well as with the Source. This forgetfulness is original sin, suffering, delusion. When this delusion of utter seperateness underlies and governs whatever I think, say and do, what kind of world do I create? To find the answer to this, observe how humans relate to each other, read a history book, or watch the news on television tonight.

If the structures of the human mind remain unchanged, we will always end up re-creating fundamentally the same world, the same evils, the same dysfunction."

more Great words:

"This world will always have turmoil and trouble. What are you worried about? Go to the shelter of God, where the Masters have gone, and whence they are watching and helping the world. You shall have safety forever, not only for yourself, but for all those loved ones who have been entrusted to your care by our Lord and Father."

"Dont be attacted to the passing dreams of life. Live for God and God alone. This is the way to have freedom and safety in the world. Outside of God there is no security; no matter where you go, delusion can attack you. Be free right now. Be a son of God now; realize you are His child, so that you may be rid of this dream of delusion forever. Meditate deeply and faithfully, and one day you will wake up in ecstasy with God and see how foolish it is that people think they are suffering. You and I and they are all pure Spirit."

"The grim march of world political events points inexorably to the truth that without spiritual vision, the people perish. Science, if not religion, has awakened in humanity a dim sense of the insecurity and even insubstantiality of all material things. Where indeed may man go now, if not to his Source and Origin, the Spirit within him?"

Be not afraid of the frightening dream of this world. Awaken in God's immortal light! There was a time when life, to me, was like helplessly watching a terrifying movie, and I was giving too much importance to the tragedies being enacted therein. Then, one day while I was meditating, a great light appeared in my room and God's voice said to me: "What are you dreaming about? Behold my eternal light, in which the many nightmares of the world come and go. They are not real."
What a tremendous consolation it was! Nightmares, however dreadful, are merely nightmares. Movies, whether enjoyable or disturbing, are merely movies. We ought not keep our minds so absorbed in the sad and frightening dramas of this life. Is it not wiser to place our attention on that Power which is indestructible and unchanging? Why worry about the unpleasant surprises in the plot of this world movie! We are here for just a little while. Learn the lesson of the drama of life and find your freedom.

Just beneath the shadows of this life is God's wonderous Light. The universe is a vast temple of His presence. When you meditate, you will find doors opening to Him everywhere. When you have communion with Him, not all the ravages of the world can take away that Joy and Peace.

26T, I needed to 'hear' that Ekhart Tolle quote, thank you for sharing

quote:
"This world will always have turmoil and trouble. What are you worried about? Go to the shelter of God, where the Masters have gone, and whence they are watching and helping the world. You shall have safety forever, not only for yourself, but for all those loved ones who have been entrusted to your care by our Lord and Father."

I just watched this really upsetting video narrated by Pink about how sheep are cruelly farmed for wool in Australia:
http://getactive.peta.org/campaign/p2pinkwoolvideo?c=917

And I have been wondering......If people are going to 'ascend' to a higher dimension at some point, what will happen to all of the Earth's creatures....will they come with us or get left behind? Is there such thing as karma and have those who are born to 'endless night' chosen that life on another conscious level because in another life time they caused suffering so they volunteered in this life time to a) experience suffering to acquire empathy with those who suffer and b) play a part in the bigger picture of learning (the ones who hurt them will also have to learn, and on another level we all learn that this is what happens when we stray away from the Unity of who we truly are.....that this is 'evil'.

Yes.....ego. Ego is a better word.
