So I'm a single mom living with my parents while I go back to college. I have a cosmetology diploma but I went back to college because I yearned for something more out of life.

I'm finishing my core classes this semester and it seems that the school closest to me that offers my degree program is an hour away. This college wants nothing to do with me despite my excellent grades. So, I'm applying to a more prestigious college 2 hours away.

I'm scared. If I get accepted, I will have to move out from my safety net. My parents really need me to go, and I want ot go. But I have no way to figure out how I will make it. I get no child support. I'm not on gov't assistance or anything. How will I work?

I know it's a move I will have to make. If I get accepted into the Medical College of Georgia, the sky will be the limit for me. But I'm so scared. If I don't get accepted there, its a 4 hour move away for the next college.

This saturn return is really turning me inside out. I need a voice of reason. Anyone? Anything?

What about applying for a scholarship or a grant??
What about student loans??
Best of luck on your new career!!

PS: How old is your boy?? You'll need to think about daycare too -- always a scary proposition..... But if you can get a student loan that should pay a lot of your expenses plus your tuition. In larger cities, the YMCA offers before and after school care (sometimes IN the schools!), and they also accept low-income or welfare/assistance families.

I can't comment as I'm in Oz, but they sound like great suggestions from Azalaksh. BTW, is that your real name or is it from a fantasy novel? We've just found out we're having a son, and I've been thinking of groovy names like Belgarion or Rand (The Wheel of Time which I've just started and absolutely love). We're sort of thinking Harper.

Dean.

Once you move out and have no income. won't you be eligible for government help like WIC. welfare, HEAP, section 8, food stamps, and so forth?
Check into all the social services agencies.
As long as you can prove you are not being supported by anyone and no one is claiming you as a dependent on their taxes, you should be able to get help.

Did you mean me??
Not my real name, but part of it is
"Azala" was the Goddess of Air (I'm a Libra) in the Cirque du Soleil routine "Dralion." Found out later "Azala" is also a character in the Chrono-Trigger game.
KSH are my initials.
I pronounce it ah-ZAH-la-kesh.

What about the guidance counsellors at your current school and your (prospective) new school?? They should be able to recommend financial directions for you to pursue.....
