...a commentary on death and sleep...I have participated in the passings of many individuals in my career. I have witnessed many individuals who are the living dead...kept hanging on by a soul toe by artificial means, breathing machines, drugs, etc.
And what I have observed is a void....when the soul intends to take flight, the conciousness is absent. The heart is beating, the lungs are breathing but conciousness is missing, the very substance that makes us who we are is gone....
People on life support resemble, quite astoundingly people who are asleep. Sit quietly sometime and really observe someone sleeping....someone in a deep sleep, no movement, no talking, no dreams....deep sleep...and the same "feel" is there, the same void, the same lack of conciousness.
The difference is when you know someone is sleeping you know they will be back, when I know one of my patients is brain dead, I know they will not be back...but there is the same quality of conciousness.
I do wonder if the soul, the conciousness takes flight during sleep and chooses to return. Of course we all know of astral travel, but I am talking about a universal flight of the soul during sleep...does the soul detach and, infact, remain attached by a golden cord???
Is death a mere sleep when the soul and conciousness does not return?
The perpetual sleep.
Such a funny similarity to death and sleep...
