It's a good film. I don't know why she was so bothered about his face. It didn't look that bad. If he wasn't into Scientology and all that crazy stuff, I'd date him myself. IP: Logged |

Watch it very very closely again. She was not bothered by his face. Most folks miss several key things in the movie.

OK...watch closely AFTER he calls for TECH SUPPORT. They wrap the story up quite nicely. And the voice telling him to wake up at the end right before he opens his eyes, is Sophie the dark haired girl's voice. It is her in the future...seems she also signed up for LE. ------------------ Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain. IP: Logged |

Nope, never understood it. Reminds me of every David Lynch movie I ever saw. And Eyes Wide Shut? Anyone understand Mulholland Drive? Silverstone, I will rent this movie one more time for you, but preferably after reading everyone explain it, because I just never understand it. It's like Donnie Darko everytime I have a different theory about what happened, but I swear, its because they don't want you to know, or can't really explain it themselves, so try to keep it open. Anyone seen De Ja Vu? Certain plot points are just plain annoying! How do you send a sign to yourself in the future - knowing that you need that sign to make a difference? They're paradoxes that make for great films because they play with your imagination without letting you overanalyse (as opposed to books). Momento was a great example of completely making sense, but still keeping you trying to fit the peices. Pulp Fiction was good for that too - never really peiced the timelines for every scene, but I don't think you're meant too.Heaps of Love, Dean. ------------------ I realized it for the first time in my life: there is nothing but mystery in the world, how it hides behind the fabric of our poor, browbeat days, shining brightly, and we don't even know it. Sesame,I know what you mean, the first time I saw this movie was a few years after high school and did not get it. I just now, recently, decided to watch it again, after going thru all of my movies. I actually e-mailed Lexx asking her questions, and finally watched again, and got it! I'll be back to night to post about all of this-- Lexx, that was not Sophia's (Penelope Cruz's) voice in the end waking him up (when his eye opens), it's a nurse or doctor waking him up from LE. Listen to it carefully, I posted the link at the top I'll be back tonight to comment on the movie. __________________________________________________________________________________________ Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year.... I did, "sigh".... but having mid range hearing loss, many voices sound the same to me. Like I said,..just watch the movie carefully AFTER HE MEETS TECH SUPPORT.....it all makes sense then. IP: Logged |

Ok, I am writing this fast and to the point--Tom Cruise is with Cameron Diaz; he never loved her-- then he meets Penelope Cruz, after the car accident with Cameron Diaz, Cameron Diaz dies, and Tom Cruise's face is basically deformed. Up until after the club with Penelope Cruz and Tom's friend (when Tom wears a mask) and after all three go home, he goes home and signs up for LE on the internet. He leaves his father's friend in charge of his percentage to the company-- he later commits suicide and LE takes over-- after that, "it's all a dream in his LE state." He never murdered Sophia (Penelope Cruz), nor went to jail, etc; that was all a mistake, he began having nightmares in his LE state. He's actually been in LE for 150 years, which means that Sophia and probably all of the people he knew are dead now. And at the end, when he wakes up (when his eye opens), when the lady says, "Open your eyes" is a nurse working in the LE organization telling him to "open your eyes," as he decided to come back after talking to the tech support Sophia (Penelope Cruz) truly loved him but Tom barely knew her, unfortunately, although he loved her too (or realized she was for him)-- and, yes, his face changed to normal when he sees Sophia again at the end, as he is creating his reality in his dream state-- but, she never cared that his face was damaged in real life, before he signed to LE His face will be cured, but as the Tech support guy told him, everything will be all different. As Lexx said, it will all make sense after he talks to the tech support guy at the end. The reason he didn't know what happaned to him, as to him comitting suicide, etc, is because they (LE) erased his memory, as the tech support guy tells him The first time we see the tech support guy, is a foreshadowing of him signing up for LE the middle of part 12 and the entire part of 13, tells it all: Part 12: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-KmMcY_gtI&feature=related Part 13: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIGS0VI-uvU Lexx, let me know your thoughts, you are good at this-- thanks for motivating me to see it again~ The movie evokes the quest for eternal life and eternal youth; the consequences and choices we make in our lives that changes us forever-- among other factors *** The New York Times What a brilliant, wonderful and authentic movie, I'm glad I revisited this movie __________________________________________________________________________________________ Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year.... Very good synopsis silverstone! He gets to know Sophie here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af-Rdtc90yI And here still getting to know Sophie and they both talk about Benny the dog and LE while watching a show about it on Television. Later he hunts LE down on the internet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnXitt1gMPM So Sophie knew about LE...and I feel she opted to be frozen too after David died and the memorial party for him. Look at how she acts at the memorial and what LE TECH SUPPORT says about her. Like the LE people knew all about her.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIGS0VI-uvU Look at Sophie..that is a truly heartbroken love sick person. I still think the voice at the end is Sophie who I feel had also in been in cryo. It is not a whisper or her being silly so it sounds different. But maybe that is the romantic in me wanting it to be her helping to bring him back to life to join her. ------------------ Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain.

Now, you got me thinking, Lexx. I too want it to be her voice, so I am analyzing it... trying to figure out if she also went into LE. quote:
And here still getting to know Sophie and they both talk about Benny the dog and LE while watching a show about it on Television. Later he hunts LE down on the internet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnXitt1gMPM
Which was a foreshadowing in the movie which signifies that Tom will sign for LE later on [books, stories and films use foreshadowing, as it's vital in literary or film works]. While both Tom and Penelope Cruz watch the show Penelope (Sophia) says, " That's comforting-- it's safe for Benny, I am in" but that was in context of their conversation, as they were both watching the show. What she truly meant was that it's safe for her, but putting emphasis on the "comfort" zone she was currently in with Tom, at that moment, hugging each other. quote: So Sophie knew about LE...and I feel she opted to be frozen too after David died and the memorial party for him. Look at how she acts at the memorial and what LE TECH SUPPORT says about her. Like the LE people knew all about her.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIGS0VI-uvU Look at Sophie..that is a truly heartbroken love sick person.
Correct, and you got me thinking here, but I looked at that part, and the tech support guy says to Tom in the elevator in regards to what you posted, " Your friend, Brian, showed "me" through your 3 day memorial in your old time, he was a true friend" Meaning, Brian, Tom's friend, told the tech support guy, the Life Extension (LE) organization, all about Tom; so, he, the tech support guy or someone in the LE staff visited his memorial, as he was invited. In essence, when Penelope Cruz visited, which was a mesmerizing moment, I am almost certain that Brian told the Tech support guy, or LE organization, the short relationship Tom and Sophia had-- which was meaningful to Tom. the words "Your friend, Brian, showed "me" through your 3 day memorial" meaning showed the LE and told them about Tom; otherwise, how would he know that? ... he (the tech support guy) continues to say to Tom in the elevator after revealing it all, which I am certain this is what made you believe she signed up for LE, "It was Sophia who never truly recovered-- it was she who somehow knew you best, and like you, she never forgot that one night where true love seemed possible" Making a reference to when Tom and Penelope first met at his party and later on that night, at her apartment. The Tech support guy had to know this because Brian told him this, and because he saw her in deep pain, which shows in her face-- which was a very moving and brilliant performance by Penelope Cruz. quote:
I still think the voice at the end is Sophie who I feel had also in been in cryo. It is not a whisper or her being silly so it sounds different.
Listen to it very carefully, and keep rewinding it, and you'll see it's not her voice-- Penelope has and had an accent in the movie-- the voice sound like someone else, which I think is the nurse waking him up and telling him to relax and open his eyes. quote:
But maybe that is the romantic in me wanting it to be her helping to bring him back to life to join her.
I thought the same-- and actually, it would make it better-- but nothing else seems like it was Penelope's voice. Let me know if I am missing something else, my friend, I could be wrong--I forgot to mention that he also never met the psychiatrist, it was all him dreaming-- He did, however, wear a mask, at some point. Due to his depression, David sought the services of Life Extension, wishing to start the Lucid Dream the morning after the drunken incident, and to live under the "vanilla sky" his mother always talked about-- They, the LE organization, erased his memory where he committed suicide and erased that he chose to sign up for LE. quote: He was placed in the cryogenic system, where he has been for the past 150 years. While David was experiencing the Lucid Dream, a malfunction of the system caused the dream to become a nightmare, merging Sofia and Julianna's personas and creating people, such as Dr. McCabe, out of his past memories. At the roof of the building, the man offers David a choice, to either be reinserted into the corrected Lucid Dream as to be together with Sofia forever, or to opt to wake up though this requires a leap of faith off the building. David opts to be awakened so that he can live a real life, and he takes a few last moments to say goodbye to the Dream versions of Sofia and Brian, then jumps off the building, his memories flashing through his eyes as he falls. Just as he hits the ground, a voice tells David to wake up, the film briefly focuses on his closed eye opening onto the real world.

I like when Cameron Diaz says to Tom, "And you can go back and talk to that cute brunette-- I don't want to meet any of your fancy friend's, I knew them all back when I was fancy, too."Meaning, she's been there- done that! Great line! IP: Logged |

I guess the only thing I'd like to add is that if Sophie had gone into cryo too, that they had made it clearer...and or that she had for sure gone into cryo, and it was her voice telling him to wake up at the end. That would have given the movie a truly happy romantic ending! ------------------ Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain. IP: Logged |
