In terms of altered states of conciousness...What is it that attracts us to be altered from our baseline states of conciousness?
From the buzz of the nicotine cigarette to the hallucinogenic effects of LSD, why do we seek to be altered?
I am posting this here because I am not seeking the popular society answers of "escapsim" or "addiciton."
To me, these terms seem to be a cop out of society to lable something they do not understand.
And one does not even have to use "drugs" to be altered, exercise and eating (etc.) can lend itself to a bit of a buzz as well.
I read an article recently where the author stated that our human need to be altered comes from some deep physiological action in the brain, as evidenced by children's buzzing at young ages: dizzying them selves, hyperventilating, etc. The author even goes on to say that our need for alterations in conciounsess is evolutionary.
