My opinions/experience/research on the topic of "spirit guides";
a term I detest.
YOU have within you all the "guidance" you need. Looking outside is automatically sending out a loud invitation to anyone/anything that would just love to puppet your doings and thinkings in your life.
Like saying to the universe;
"Sucker here! Tell me what to do!"
Sorry, but any more I would say might be a thread killer.....
So no further comments from me at this time.

I used to go to a New Agey group get together once a week, and many people there claimed to have spirit guides. The ones who made no such claims, were far more stable and spiritually attuned then the other fruit cakes channeling frak knows what on the weekends. Most folks are blind to the dangers of such things, possession is 9/10's of the law and all that

Maybe that's what they're there for: the people who do look outside of themselves, and there are many. I always thought spirit guides were just deceased loved ones who help through hard times or whenever else guidance is essential.
