How does one KNOW when one is following the path/advice/wishes of the Higher S-elf?

I sometimes wish that Earth and our Universe were not a Free-Will planet/universe because it makes everything so much more incredibly sad and difficult! I wish I was forced to or had to follow to path of my Higher S-elf at all times. So how do I know if I am following the path of or making choices in alignment of my Higher S-elf or using my free will to indulge the ego/my fears/insecurities? Does the path of the Higher S-elf mean I must face these fears, and not doing so is following the path of the Ego to keep it happy/comforted?

Any thoughts/opinions/advice/musings welcomed and appreciated!

Quotes from the song "Right in Two" by TOOL that explain how I feel... (I'd post the whole song but it's kinda long and might take away from the topic at question... great song though, much truth.)

"Angels on the sideline,
Puzzled and amused.
Why did Father give these humans Free Will?
Now they're all confused."

"Angels on the sideline,
Baffled and confused,
Father blessed them all with reason,
And this is what they choose..."

"How they survive so misguided is a mystery..."

Thanks Vajra, you always give really great responses. I really appreciate your sharing of your personal experiences as well. Can't say I've experienced things like that. And thank you as well for the book recommendation I will get it as soon as I can, it's funny too cause the number 27 is special to me.

I don't necessarily choose things that are against my moral compass, but I do think I perhaps choose things sometimes that prevent growth if that makes sense. I like comfort, to be comfortable and I'm not very fond of change, in fact I can be downright afraid of it at times. And I just wish I knew what my Higher S-elf wanted sometimes so that I didn't choose the "wrong" thing or when I am faced with many options, I wish I could know via my Higher S-elf which is the best option for me, the one that will lead me the right way on my path and the one that will contribute to my greatest happiness. I am experiencing something of a conundrum with a very big decision I have to make that I have a few options with and I really don't know which is best! Part of me just wants to stay where I am because it is easiest. But what if I miss out on something great or an opportunity or a turn on the path I can't predict by staying where I am? Then on the other hand I think, what if I regret the decision and create more work/stress by not staying? I know one isn't supposed to regret, but I do at times. There are definitely things I wish I had done differently. I have also been searching for my path for sometime now and I wish I could know with greater clarity, what exactly my path is in this life or which ways to take to find it best. I don't want to reincarnate to have to face the same lessons over again. Another life like this would be unbearable. I don't want another incarnation in fact and would like to know how to achieve this, and likewise, I don't want to be physically immortal as I am not pleased with my "flesh puppet" and would trade for a different one if I could, and not just my body, I would trade my personality too. But I know I have to learn to be happy with what I have/am, but you know these things are a lot easier for some than others... Anyway starting to ramble a bit here. But yeah I understand your analogy of a scripted life but I also think maybe that wouldn't be so bad, some stories/scripts are pretty epic you know! I wouldn't mind being a character in a book or something along those lines.

Thank you for the thread link too.

Great advice, thank you. I definitely do have a very difficult time trying to detach/let go, someone on here said it was part of my lesson in this life, to detach. And worrying/fretting is a huge issue for me. I try so hard to stop but it's pretty bad. I think it's gotten a little better over the years but still.. I didn't realize it had to do with Scorpio pride, I've never thought of myself as very prideful, I can really beat myself up, but maybe I do have it and don't even realize that's what it is.
