I have a friend who is working in a NGO in Uganda ( Africa) she called me recently saying she is a bit afraid because when she goes to Christian churches there, she always find someone who suddently falls on the floor screaming and making weird movements like if they are having an epileptic crisis.

Also throwing white stuff from their mouth. After some prayers from people around them they seem to be ok.

When I was in India I went to a church next to a village and I saw lots of woman doing that too and the priest was like... making exorcisms and puting the demons away.

They said that priest was like... so holy so your demons would go away if you are close to him.

But I went there just feeling curious and nothing happened to me.
I wasnt screaming or falling.
I thought it was all because of the mental sugestion they had, and I also thought maybe its a way people has to get relief from some negative enotions inside, or just from tension.

Yet, Linda says in stars signs when she speaks about levitating, that the story the movie ' the exorcist' is based on, was real.

What do you think about it?
And why would a little girl be possesed for no reason?

Also... why in Europe people seems to never get ' possesed' in the church and in other countries where this is normal they do?

Just wanna hear your opinions because me and my friend were really wondering what is the cause of it.

Thanks!

That church in Uganda seems to be a Pentecostal church. That's normal for them. Though my Southern Baptist family did look down on Pentecostals, and while they were not believers in demonic possession as the Pentecostals typically were, they'd say if they DID believe it then they'd think it was the Pentecostals who were possessed.

Third world countries and regions are notorious for some of the crazier religions, and this is where they'll torture and kill people (even their own children) for things like witchcraft. They also have some equally barbaric superstitions. (And just general barbarism overall, as can be shared by the volunteers with Doctors Without Borders.)

x

A friend of mine told me he got dragged to a Pentecostal church under false pretenses which annoyed him (in addition to something else they did he considered dishonest and manipulative). So as a joke, when some spoke in tongues and dancing their jigs or falling the floor, he started quoting chants from Lovecraft stories and the Necronomicon. He had a hard time not laughing when Pentecostals were praising God for him with one saying he could feel the Holy Spirit in him.

Assuming spirit possession is real (and some could say that we are reincarnated souls which is a type of spirit possession, especially if aspects from past lives somehow assert themselves), then it wouldn't surprise me that a little girl could be affected by it (though there is a strange superstition about "virgins" being protected, but if there's any truth to that then I figure it's about one who has complete faith because they never had reason to doubt, innocence in other words which is but untested virtue, but would help keep one from being afraid).

But then I don't believe in a just cosmos, at least not just as we'd like to impose upon it (even discounting our inherent corruption and imperfection as a species).

I can't recall enough about the Exorcist, but I believe that was actually a girl "in between" childhood and adulthood, when plenty of paranormal experiences are likely, as they're in an "in between place" (and is magical and prone to be where the supernatural can intrude upon the natural as "in between" places and times like beaches, caves, mountains, the classic crossroads, equinoxes, dusk and dawn, noon and midnight, etc--and also part of why circles are seen as protective against or binding of evil spirits).

In any case, confirmation bias is a common trait of humanity, and it afflicts even the hard sciences despite all the attempts to guard against it. This is why things like possession will seem ultra-rare in western nations (the USA a notable exception, but we're excessively religious for a western nation). In short, we find what we look for. The universe is a big ink blot and we make shapes out of it as best we can. If people look for demons as a cause they'll find them. If they look for mental illness or something similar then they'll find that, too. (Btw, on mental illness, see the Rosenhan experiment .)

Though it is interesting that people deluded (as in put into mental hospitals) for being more powerful than they are tend to be "God" or "Satan" in the Bible Belt, whereas in more secular regions they'll be someone secular (or they'll be something proto-typical or generic version of God/Satan).

x

As for myself, I'm not sure what to think. I know I'm not prone to blame demons, but there are "bad places" in which people can absorb bad energy that affects their character, which is similar (it's not all that different from "contact highs" or where a mood spreads from person to person), especially as it sounds very similar to many beliefs in ancestor and nature and place spirits, what the Japanese refer to as a kami (and the kami, or place spirits which can also be in special animals, objects, homes, etc, must be carefully treated to keep them a positive experience instead of a negative one--though many worship houses in Japan do strike me as more of a business than a genuine place of spiritual practice, but it could just be the Japanese being pragmatic as well as spiritual since the kami aren't going to pay the bills).

It could be that these are psychic emanations that we humans put out (and animals, say in a factory farm) which can get absorbed, and continue to emit the good and bad we put into it. Say a trophy room of a serial killer could be a very toxic place due to what was absorbed there on a psychic level that continues to affect people who enter the room even after it has been physically cleaned out, but with no intelligence involved, it's just a "mood" that stains it for a long time to come, which many would call an evil spirit, and I'd think children would be the most sensitive to it, along with animals. (Just a possibility.)

I've had some wild supernatural experiences (which went against my beliefs, at least I wasn't looking for it) so I have to consider the possibility that malicious entities are real (likely feeding off the pain of our world), and that they can affect us, possibly even take us over, but I don't feel like sharing any of those experiences now. Maybe later, particularly the one when I was a little girl which is common to girls who come under demonic attack and/or the focuses for poltergeists.

Thank you so much for your long and very informative answer!

Ahah funny the anecdote with your friend in the pentacostal church.

I feel the same I feel we find what we look for, but also some real entities may exist.
I can't imagine how incredibly scary most have been to live an experience related to that as a kid!

I never had any kind of experience like that, but I did feel sometimes bad energy in some places , for example cementeries have a very weird vibe, also some houses.

I will tell my friend who is in Uganda to mentally focus in other things, and to not be afraid. I think its the best she can do.

Blessings for you

Btw, you might find this disturbing inspiration for Michael Meyers of interest (there are plenty of other sources, but this one seems easiest on my browser):
http://qc.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20101109102956AAQ66E1&guccounter=1

quote:
Carpenter's inspiration for the "evil" that Michael would embody came when he was in college. While on a class trip at a mental institution in Kentucky, Carpenter visited "the most serious, mentally ill patients". Among those patients was a young boy around twelve to thirteen years-old. The boy gave this "schizophrenic stare", "a real evil stare", which Carpenter found "unsettling", "creepy", and "completely insane". Carpenter's experience would inspire the characterization Loomis would give of Michael to Sheriff Brackett in the original film

Though who knows what abuse the boy went through before being hospitalized, and what abuse he suffered in the hospital.

Still, I've been around people who are violent, crazy, and the like, and while they're dangerous, they don't strike me as having an aura of evil. Very few people do that, and it often comes out in their eyes...not an "evil stare" but the eyes of a pure evil soul (also another kind that is vampiric, which I mean in a bad way, like empty that wants to suck you in, usually by degrading you somehow). While anyone can be evil (and I'd say certainly will be at some point in their life, and probably many times), these rare few are different in that I don't think there's anything else they can be (not counting self-restraint as a calculated act for greater evil deeds). I encountered most of these while a runaway on the streets, they find homeless kids wonderful to target...and one was part of a weird religion that thought God and Satan were the same being, with him revering the worst of the Bible (at least he practiced it and it sounded like he was talking about a church rather than his own private beliefs, though he also seemed unaware of how bizarre it sounded to us, and he was a rare example of the "soulless eyes" I've seen while a runaway that made me shudder).

It's possible those people are different ("born wrong" or even "without a soul"), perhaps even possessed. I make no claim as I'm mystified that they even exist and don't know if they're born or made, but I saw one that was under the age of 10.
