Really fascinating read here, and I do feel that the term Angels can mean alot of different things to many different people (as you pointed out already). Yet I expect that the predominant Archetype (certainly in the Western World) would be more in-line with the Christian Elements. However I also think it likely that when most people imagine the image of an 'Angel'... they envision a Female Persona as opposed to a Male... which is pretty curious considering the Lucifer Archetype. Though maybe my thoughts are colored by my own experiences yet they are generally depicted as looking quite Feminine.Heck, just putting the term 'Angels' on Google Image search pretty much only displays Female Gendered Types...
And something of an anecdote in regards this Idea... which has always kinda stuck with me from participating in many Nativity Plays as a Child. In that I had wanted to play an Angel on a number of occasions because I always felt they had the coolest costumes with the Coat-Hanger Wings and All... though I was often accosted and informed by the Teachers that only Girls could play the part of the Angels... LOL...?
This kinda confused the heck out of me as a child as around that same time I was watching shows such as 'Highway to Heaven' : ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highway_to_Heaven ) where the main Character (Johnathon) is an Angel assigned to helping people on Earth (and I think his Co-Star is also an Angel & Male)...
And shows like that share many similarities between events you have documented here, where help has been given to others in often unusual ways. Though not necessarily always from a Supernatural Perspective (in the show) as to avoid exposing those folks in need from having a 'Matrix Revelation' like instance, which could end up doing more harm to them than good. With being inconspicuous often Jonathan and Mark's modus operandi from one Episode to the Next.
I would even place the likes of Quantum Leap and a whole bunch of others Shows that utilize a similar concept as being modern day versions of an Angelic Theme. Though more often than not the actions taken by such characters are generally in line with Ideals of High Morality than anything Supernatural, suggesting that anyone inclined to help others could just as easily be classed as Angelic in their behavior (with or without their Coat-Hanger Wings showing).
Or atleast, that's how I often interpreted the concept while growing up.
Though an idea I became more fascinated much later in life and it's parallels to that of Angels was the Greek Concept of a Daemon(s) or Daimonion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daemon_(classical_mythology)
'Daemons are benevolent or benign nature spirits, beings of the same nature as both mortals and deities, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature, or the deities themselves (see Plato's Symposium). According to Hesiod's myth, "great and powerful figures were to be honoured after death as a daimon…"[6] A daimon is not so much a type of quasi-divine being, according to Burkert, but rather a non-personified "peculiar mode" of their activity.'
Anyhow, I can probably add some more thoughts on this later but that's all for now.
