I am filling out an application to work at my local Humane Society (they actually don't have positions open now, but keep your app. for the future when they do), and on the job requirements, it lists;

Rabies Immunization required.

Does anyone know anything about Rabies Immunization? Is it safe? What exactly is going into your system? Ew, I don't know if I want that.
I don't like the idea of it.

In California, children can attend school without any vaccinations if the parents or guardians say in writing that it is against their personal beliefs. Many states have a religious exemption. But I'm not sure how that would apply to the private sector.

Do you know anything about rabies vaccines for adults? Are we getting the same vaccine that my dog gets? What is in it, and what are the side effects?

Looks like you only have three choices: Take a stand, forget about working there, or get the shot.

When I worked as an ER vet tech in California and Oregon it wasn't required for us to have a rabies vaccine, but that was in 1997. With the transport of animals from East to West the case load has risen concerning the number of rabid animals. (East of the Mississippi it is mandatory for all those working with animals to be vaccinated against rabies due to the high number of rabies cases).

It is your typical rabies vaccine- I can't remember if it is a killed or live virus that is used, but I never met a tech that had a reaction or a vet for that matter. The majority of the Vets that I worked with came from Mid west and Eastern Schools (in OR I worked with many that came from a top vet school / animal referral practice in NY). All had been vaccinated against rabies.

If I had stayed in the business or worked out here (I did work in lab vet med, but I only had to be vaccinated against Hepatitis) I would get the vaccine.

Good luck - I am sure you will do well. What part of California are you looking to work in? I used to work for All Care Animal Referral Center in Fountain Valley with Dr. Rooks. We used to call it the Rookery because he was such a hard-a$$ LOL... In Oregon it was Dove Lewis ER vet hospital

That links usually have ton of information about various procedures and animal care.

Thanks for all the info., Pidua!

I live in Marin County, Northern Calif., about 30 minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge to San Francisco. I am sending my app. to the county Humane Society, although they don't have openings now, they keep your app. on file for when they do.
