I have a new kitty, my first cat ever. I have a Vet appointment for him for next week, so I'm not sure how old Magus is yet. Magus is very cuddly, but refuses to sleep in the comfy pet bed I bought. Magus will only sleep next to one of us, but I'm afraid of getting scratched or squishing him. I even tried putting blankets in the pet bed to see if he wanted to be more snuggly, but alas it hasn't worked. I know Magus is a smart Kitty, because it took only one day to cat train him to use the litter box Any idea how I may get Magus to his own bed, he's currently asleep in the middle of my bed and I'm afraid of waking him up, so here I am.... zzzz

OMYGOSH it will be hard to get him out of your bed. Who can resist a warm, cuddly, soft bed with a warm cuddly human in it? My dogs and cats never could. I say let him stay. ha ha ha

Well.......

I personally, have never been able to train a cat to stay off of my bed anytime
But, my dog, has her own bed, and sleeps there all night, good doggie!

Cats are very proprietorial; they have little interest in things that don't seem to be of value (by their feline standards). If they see you using something - a bed, a chair, a newspaper, clothing - then they think it's of value, and then will try to claim it. This is especially true of a cat ina new situation/environment, where the cat is still geting used to the place and claiming it as his territory.

In most cases you can compromise with a cat (that is, share), but until you demonstrate to Magus that this cat bed is of any value (i.e. you sleep in it or use it somehow) then fat chance he'll care about that bed ever.

I had bought my cats a straching post once, and they would not touch it. Then I used it as a TV stand - guess what: they all wanted it. I once got my older cat a linen-lined wicker basket for a "bed", and she wanted nothing to do with it until I stashed it in the closet and used it to store my clean jeans in. If I buy new things for my cats now, I always make a point of "using" it somehow to make it more attractive to them. Sounds odd, perhaps, but really this is how cats are: they want your stuff.

BTW, I never have discouraged my cats from sleeping on the bed. I find sleeping with cats nearby comforting.

Gemini Nymph,

that's so true, thanks for sharing, brought memories back, it's true, you have to use it, for them to want anything to do with it

Hi Gemini Nymph
I wonder if thats anything to do with it being new and smelling different aswell? Maybe they waited for the new object to smell 'familiar' like with your jeans for them to get used to it and use it!?

I cats! In fact, just found some really interesting info about the way cats use pheromones, for instance did you know that cats have scent glands on their foreheads and cheeks and thats why they rub their heads against you and other things in the home!!! I had no idea of the reason before lol!!! Thought it was just affection!

I found it on Amazon.co.uk if you want to read more, its "How to Say It to Your Cat: Understanding and Communicating with Your Feline" by Janine Adams.
(I used the 'search inside' option.)

Good luck with Magus, Planet Soul!!

Sun Scorp- actually, I've found that it's not really a new smell that turns cats off so much as they judge things in relation to if someone else - their owner, the other cats in the house, guests - is using it.

BTW my cats will literally crawl into a bag of brand new clothes the second I bring them home, because they know the routine of me buying new clothes. So whatever's in the bag's *most* be of value and therefore claimed.

Its so wonderful to see so many knowflake-cat lovers. I have fallen in love with Magus, and so has everyone else. Magus is becomming more and moe a part of or family everyday. I've always been a dog lover, and never before knew the contentment of having a cat. For some odd reason, my dad never did like cats and so I was never really around any. I have been missing out on so much I'm amazed a how intelligent and individual cats are.
Magus learned to use the litter box her second day, and she seems to sense when we are about to leave the apartment. Both of my kids love having a new pet, especially my Virgo son. My Cancer bf especially loves it. I often catch him taking a nap, wiht Magus curled in his arm. As for bedtime, it didn't work out to have Magus sleep in our bed. Mr. Cancer was waking her up, when he'd get up to go work the graveyard shift. Tonight, I put the catbed in my lap and then put Magus in it. I stroked her until she fell asleep. I then placed her bed in the corner of our room, where she is still sleeping at the moment. I hope she likes it, because I like knowing she's keeping me company until my Cancer returns in the morning.

I love animals. Especially kitties. She was found wondering around a big building.

great info, thanks. magus does something interesting. she likes to crawl up, and lick my nect or lick my arm before she falls asleep. I take it tis is her way of showing affection, but I have to bring her down when she licks my neck because her little paws scratch.
