ok, so today i go to the shelter to adopt a dog. well who would we want to adopt but Luca, the shelter dog. this dog is allowed to roam free where ever she wants in the shelter. Katie is the kennel manager. totally cool girl. she used to date a guy who lived in the house in front of my apartment, and she used to come in the pub where i worked all the time. anyway, this dog is completely in love with katie. follows her everywhere. luca is very timid and scared though. Katie was excited that i was taking her but obviously sad. she said if there was the slightest problem she would take her because she was going to take her home if i didnt. so we get her home. she isthe best dog ever. so sweet. but really scared and she curled up on a blanket in the corner of the living room. and everyone was happy. and there was a warm happy feeling in all of our hearts and its time for me to go back to the shelter and clean up more do-do and bathe more animals, and i go skipping out the door. well as im leaving luca jumps up and pushes pastme and runs out the door. great. so we try the usual sweet talk. c'mon luca come in side. she bolts. she goes flying down the street.it was terrible. for the first 20 minutes she just runs back and forth down the street by our house. she completely ignored the hot dogs. finally she bolts down a street and we lost her completely. completely. the dog is awol. oh this is perfect. i just lost the kennel dog! so i go back home hot dog in hand( just picture me in the middle of the street screaming and holding out hotdogs) and call katie(who until now likes me just fine) and tell her the situation. shes heart broken and leaves the kennel immediately to try and find her beloved dog i managed to loose within half an hour. there was a little cussing and anger involved on her part but shes on her way. after searching the entire neighborhood for a literal hour and a half, she has to go to the kennel meeting she called. so i look another hour and finally give up. i have officially lost the kennel dog. i can never go back. everyone loved that dog. i called the vet to schedule a time for her to get fixed and the vet said, "oh! you adopted Luca? I love her! " yes. nicole is a failure to animals everywhere. well, long story short, another volunteer(who also just loooves Luca) lives near me and said shed keep an eye out. well lookie there. luca was found two blocks away from my home. after searching a total of 3 hours, the dog was two blocks away. i am the worst pet owner ever. so katie comes and gets her because she runs from everyone but katie, and katie takes her home. now katie called me to assure me that this was in no way my fault, and thanked me repeatedly for calling her and kept telling me how i did the right thing. blah blah blah. she probably didnt want to loose a volunteer. what a terrible day.IP: Logged |

Wow! I hope you are feeling better now. I hope you are going to continue to volunteer? You should, it wasn't your fault, you had no idea she would bolt as soon as your door opened, as she was so passive in her little corner in your living room. Good luck and don't worry IP: Logged |

Neph's right. This wasn't your fault. I'm sure it's easier said than done, but don't be too hard on yourself. How could you have known? IP: Logged |

Zen, You were instrumental in getting Katie and Luca together. Get it? Katie loved Luca but was hesitant to adopt her. You came along and Luca was almost lost. Now Katie and Luca are happy in the same household as it should have been all along. You removed the hesitation and should be happy I had a similar experience with my cat Fletcher. He had been rehabilitated after a horrific "thrown out of car and then hit by car" accident. I worked as a tech at the ER Vet hospital and one of the vets asked me if I wanted him. I really didn't.. and when I brought him home he was a total jerk LOL... So, I took him back to the place so we could use him as a donor cat. Basically, they have free run of the hospital, food, love, treats..etc.. and when we need to draw blood we sedate them and they donate. Well, Fletcher was a real jerk to EVERYONE.. no one could get near him. I left for my two days off and when I came back he looked all pathetic in his cage. They didn't know what to do with him and had put him back up for adoption. He saw me and meow pitifully while rubbing up against the cage. I went up to the cage and said to him "Fine... Mr. Orange Boy.. I'll take you home.. but we need some rules. Stop trying to bite me and hiss at me. If you are mean, I am taking you right back here and you won't move to California with me". Well, that was about 10 years ago and he has been with me since. He is my best buddy loves being with our other cat - Pheobe. He follows me around like a puppy, but still bites at my feet once in a while. That is when I give him the "super squeeze" and hug him close while giving him kisses all over. LOL... It's funny how things work out. IP: Logged |
