From The Bark blog:

Ohio Bill Would Ban Puppy Mills

Pretty Girl's Bill—named for a dog found barely hanging on to life after being abandoned by her owners when she could no longer breed—was unveiled yesterday in Ohio. If passed, the bill would mandate random inspections of dog breeding sites and liscensing for commercial breeders.

Legislation is needed, of course, to enforce standards and monitor the actions of anyone breeding and selling animals. But I suspect it's consumers who ultimately will have the biggest influence on the continuation or discontinuation of puppy mills. The key is education. Make sure everyone you know is aware of the horrors of puppy mills. If you're going to purchase a specific breed, do your research! Never buy from a pet store, and find a reputable breeder before making a purchase. (Check out HSUS's tips on How to Find a Good Dog Breeder.) Or, better yet, adopt a dog from a breed-specific rescue group. But never forget that mutts and mixed-breed dogs make extraordinary pets, and shelters all over the world are bursting at the seams with very special animals.

If you live in Ohio, be sure you let your legislators know that you support this bill.

http://www.prisonersofgreed.org/
Website put together by a member of Hearts United for Animals ( http://hua.org/ ).
"Hundreds of thousands of dogs suffer in puppy mills in this country. The dogs are prisoners of greed. They are locked in small cages. They freeze in the winter and swelter in the summer. The dogs never get out of their prisons. They are bred over and over again until they die. The only way to free them from the misery of these horrid puppymills is to eliminate the demand for puppies by refusing to buy a puppy in a pet store and boycotting those pet stores that sell puppies. When people stop buying puppies in pet stores, the puppy mills will go out of business and the misery will end. The state and federal governments do not enforce the laws to protect the dogs. The commercial breeders and brokers have huge well-funded lobbying efforts. Please join this fight to free the prisoners of greed. The only person who is going to make a difference for the dogs suffering in puppy mills is you. You, the people, can free them from their puppy mill prisons."

One of my favourite rescue sites is that of a group who brings as many Bichons out of puppy mills as they can. They have also helped out other groups when asked:

(the personal accounts/pictures can be awful and depressing, but a necessary read for anyone thinking of buying from a pet store or backyard breeder)

Puppy Auctions

Our undercover investigation back in February showed you the horror of puppy mills here in Ohio. Now our investigation continues, this time we're exposing the world of dog auctions. For months now we've been telling you about puppy mills-- places dogs are cramped in cages, used for mass breeding... The story angered many of you. Some say this is where the puppy mill business begins. It's legal-- but is it humane?
