My sweet dog, an Italian Greyhound gets chapped nose constantly. I haven't figured out why this is. Following the vets advice, I put neosporin on it, but he always licks it off so it never completely heals. Poor guy..

What can I do?

I never heard of chapped nose.

Does that mean that it is excessively dry?

Do you live in a cold climate? just curious

oh thanks for responding nephthys!

well. we live in californina, not too dry or wet. this all started when we had him in training. they have a chain link run that he would poke his nose through and rub raw. so for a year now I haven't been able to get it under control.

I wonder if he has an allergy to the food I'm feeding him. It's top notch food, but he could be allergic to chicken or something else in the food right?

Hope he feels better.

What kind of training?

I guess it could be an allergy. I don't know. The Vet should know, but sounds like he just said to use neosporin.

I had a major case of chapped lips last month. Just awful and painful. I bought something from the natural health food store that has a lot of shea butter in it. The marketing on the product says shea butter has the highest moisturizing properties of all natural products. I've seen tins of organic shea butter for sale in natural health food stores. May be you could do some research on it for Freddie. Hope he's starts feeling better soon.

thank you all.

neph, I had him in obedience training. he's a jumper!! he was there for a month.

recently, i changed his food to the lowest alergenic food [from what i read]..duck and sweet potato kibble. not only does he love it and eat every bite, but his nose has almost completely healed. (he's been on the food for about two weeks now)

so the verdict is: alergies. (for now anyway)

aphrodite, nice to see you here. i have shea butter salve. i will try it! my one thought is..he may love the taste of it. I can barely keep my tongue out of the tin it smells so yummy!

OMG Lovely! What a coincidence! Jasmine is a jumper too! She is a Springer Spaniel! *Spring!* *Spring!* *Spring!*

Another coincidence ~ Jasmine is eating the Duck/Potato kibble by Pinnacle! Is it the same one you feed Freddie? I got a free bag, got a coupon from the Pet Fair we went to. She likes it but of course she loves any food.

Neph, i give freddie Natural Balance duck and potato.
http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/products/PandD.html

Ya know what.. He definately has a chicken alergy because I gave hime some wet chicken mix (all natural stuff) and two days later he had a red raw nose. So I've narrowed it down to chicken!
