May have to do this in 2 parts.

Part I

This was sent to me by a friend here in Michigan.

Baby Moose 12 Hours Old - Born in the middle of downtown Naubinway , Michigan

In my 33 years in Michigan's Upper Peninsula , I have never seen a new born baby moose. This one was not even a half a mile from our house. The mother picked a small quiet neighbor and had her baby in the front yard just off of US 2,at 5:30 am. Allen and I were out bike riding when we came upon the pair. The lady across the street from this house told us she saw it being born. We saw them at 5:30 PM. So the little one was 12 hours old. What an awesome place we live in to see such a site. Carla Jo

The pics are awesome ! They showed it on the news but not w/ such quality photos.

Late June I was looking for strawberrys behind the house and a deer had just given birth to twins (common here). I see them each evening eating the windfall apples and one is a button buck.

I looked for an update but didn't find one, Nephthys.

I'm sure that as soon as the baby's legs were stabalized well enough to walk his mommy got him to safety in the woods. She would probably move the baby at night but even if she walked the baby down the streets in daylight I am sure that even a semi truck would stop for a moose. LOL It's bad enough hitting a deer with the damage they can do to a car and a driver. But hitting a moose would be very dangerous. Even for a driver of a big rig.

Those are small towns in the UP compared to what they are in the area of Michigan that I live in - southeastern Michigan in the metro Detroit area. Most of Michigan outside of the big city areas of the lower peninsula are woods and small towns.

I have never been to Naubinway but imagine it is the same as all the other cities in UP.

This is a map showing where Naubinway, Michigan is in the UP. It's the star on the map on the right. All the green on the map is forests. You can see there is a forest right there on route 2 by Naubinway where the baby was born. Mom didn't have too far to walk the baby to safety. Though I am sure the mommy moose wished the baby's timing had been better.

How awesome to be surrounded by all that forest!!! We don't have moose here so it's very special to see the pictures and hear about it.

Juniperb, How awesome! Twins!

Friend in Spirit, It's illegal to feed wildlife in my state, so I am sure it is illegal in other states too.

When you feed wildlife, they get used to humans, and lose their ability to sustain themselves on their own. Also it increases their risk for safety as they become accustomed to humans, thus bringing them closer to auto's, hunters, and domesticated animals.

If it was illegal here, I`d spend eons in jail Most often, they just help themselves to anything that grows and I want for myself. A for instance is deer love gourds/pumpkins and will smash them and eat the innards.

We have abundant wildlife and they can be a costly problem for the farmers.
