I spend a lot of time with my dog, we are almost inseperable. Over the past few months....at least....actually more like six months, I notice she won't eat, or hesitates for awhile, until I do [even when i know she has to be hungry]. Btw, she always has dry food available to eat at all times. It's like she doesnt want to eat without me.

Any dog I've known before has always devoured any type of food in their sight when put in front of them, but mine does not want to eat unless she sees me eating too.

She watches me and looks as if to ask why I am not also eating when i make her up something nice. And sometimes walks away and goes to her bed when she should very well be hungry (because she rarely eats her dry food). If I take something and start eating it, she will start eating hers too.

Has anyone else had this problem, or have any suggestions? It's kind of bothering me.

She should eat when it's mealtime, especially when I cook her up some savory dish. It's almost like she feels bad that I'm not eating too, and decides that because I am not, that she doesnt want to either.

What sayeth you, dog experts?

...after some searching, i see it's not an uncommon problem..especially with chihuahuas. Apparently a pack mentality thing..

My chihuahua is always growling and going after my lab when i feed them...also she's a food hound trying to eat everyone else's food.

Sometimes i have to stand in the middle of the room to eat so she can't launch herself of a table to get my food

omg

sorry, i know it's not funny. I've been around dogs like that.

yeah, my baby girl is not food aggressive at all. with me or her cat buddies that live outside. she does seem to like their food too (which i try to deter her from) and will eat right along with one of them (the nice one) once in awhile. Or, every so often she eats a few pieces... as if to taunt them and say 'Hey look what i'm doing! Eating your food!" but they don't care so it doesnt last long. lol

the visual of a chi launching off of something to get at food ....and you having to stand in the middle of the room to eat.....LOL!!!

have you seen this yet?

My Bertie once stole fries off my plate, when I turned my head for a second or two. I caught him pulling away. Walt started doing that earlier this year - stole a little chocolate cake that I'd taken a bite from, and left it on the coffee table. He and Emily have been getting baad with it. their mother was hilarious, and would knock things off tables and counters. I used to call rita "Pogo" because she'd bounce in front of the counter and knock things off. She used to regularly get onto the table, before she lost her sight. I have pictures from when I'd just found her sitting there.

they really are a joy.

My dog eats everything in sight so I can't offer any advice. But this lady has a helpful tip. Good luck

quote:
We have this problem w/ our dog, Ponce, as well. She won't eat if one of us isn't home (either my husband or me). The pack has to be together before she's willing to have supper. This is exceptionally problematic when we take a trip, she can't come w/ us and my mother is watching her. The 1st time we went away w/out her, she didn't eat for the first THREE DAYS.

Ponce is on Natural Balance kibble. So, we started buying the same brand of their canned food. If one of us is going to be home super late, OR we're away and my mom is watching her, we just bride her. A few spoonfuls of the wet food in her kibble seems to get her to eat. She looks at the wet food as a treat (since she's doesn't get it all the time) and its enough to intice her to have her supper.

cute vid, sand.

Alma, yeah that's similar to what I turned up in my searching. Thank you.

I'd never lived with a dog like this.

You might enjoy the Nat Geo vid I posted too - the second half focusses on a woman who has a pittie shelter, but rescued a chi and it's quite something!

someday i'll have the land to house some more.

Ooh, I'll have to watch that later today, sounds pretty funny. Can't actually imagine a Pit being controlled by something so puny.

Hahaha oh hell no! Those two r so lazy and unacrobatic they even sit flat on their butts instead of their hind legs.

But the boy does call me for dinner and he won't go if I don't. Watching and waiting for food is one of his fav activities.. I think that's the only time I don't have his attention.

Peanut and I usually eat together too. I like to share. I even cook things for me that I know she'll eat like roasted chicken or turkey, chicken soup etc. She hates dry food so I have to make chicken and rice specially for her.
Yeah, I spoil my dog.

She would eat without me but if I leave her alone for too long with someone else, I know she eats a lot less.

Yeah they can get worried/depressed wondering where their loved one is.

Yeah, Cesar is. Great ending to Sammie's story.

He's lucky he lived with older "balanced" bullies.
