Jeffrey and Jermaine hold each other close while they wait for their adopter.

Are they still available?
-yes, though we have received many inquiries. Only a few applications have been received and none are complete.

What are the requirements?
- 18 years or older to adopt, valid current identification, proof of home ownership or landlord permission to have a pet and a veterinary reference or three personal references(for those who have not had a pet before).

Do you do out of state adoptions?
-yes but you must still come to meet the brothers.

Is transportation available?
-we would prefer that you provide transportation but we may be able to arrange help.

How old are they?
-approximately 8 months

How large are they?
-approximately 35 pounds

Are they fully grown?
- they will probably grow to about 50 pounds each. This is our best guess.

Is it a requirment that they be adopted together?
Yes, we believe it is in their best interest to try to keep together at this point.

What caused Jeffrey’s blindness?
-We think that it is a congenital or birth condition. Both eyes have opacity which could be the result of illness, injury or inflammation. We believe he cannot see at all out of the left eye and perhaps can see some shadows with the right eye.

How did Operation Ava acquire the brothers?
-Jeffrey and Jermaine were found wandering and stray in Philadelphia. They were taken to Animal Control where our lifesaving director spotted them. It was immediately apparent that Jeffrey and Jermaine were scared and confused but that Jermaine was doing everything possible to stay close to his blind brother and Jeffrey leaned on Jermaine for support. They are so fond of each other and needed special care to find them a home together.

Can anything be done to preserve Jeffrey’s vision?
-A specialist should be consulted to determine this but we believe that keeping the boys together would be the most beneficial. Our veterinarians believe that the damage is not reversible since both eyes are not well formed. Jeffrey’s vision is extremely poor if he has any at all.

Is this the only thing wrong?
-Yes, at this point they both seem healthy, happy and active youngsters. They had a mild case of non-contagious demodex mange when they arrived but this is mostly resolved and should not be a problem in the future as long as they are getting good nutrition and overall care in a clean and safe environment.

Are they available for another rescue to pull?
-We wish to thank the many rescues who have expressed concern for these two but Jeffrey and Jermaine are safe here until we find a forever home for them together. We are a 501 (c) 3 non-profit rescue and no- kill shelter so we are committed to finding a secure and permanent situation for them. If in the future we need help we are always happy to reach out for assistance but we want to give this appeal some time. Please feel free to contact our director of life saving at ray@operationava.org in case we need your help. Of course we welcome your referrals if you hear of anyone who interested in adopting them.

Where is your shelter?
-Operation Ava is located at 858 North 3rd Street in Philadelphia PA 19123, The phone number for the adoption center is 215-816-5301
-to adopt you’ll need identification, proof of home ownership or permission from your landlord, a veterinary reference or three personal references.
- No appointment necessary.
Adoption Hours:
M – F 10am – 8pm, Sat 9am – 8pm, Sun 11am – 5pm

Is there an adoption fee?
-A generous donor has paid for Jeffrey’s adoption fee so that it is easier for them to be adopted together. Jermaine’s adoption fee is $275.00
Both dogs have been neutered, micro-chipped, examined by our veterinarians, and can be tested for heart worm. We will also be sending them home with a complimentary 30 day pet insurance policy from Shelter Care.

Are there any more photos of them?
-you can visit our facebook page or website, www.operationava.org to see more about these amazing brothers.

Will you update us when they are adopted?
-News will be posted on our website and facebook page and we hope to include photos when they leave. We love receiving updates when they are settled in their new homes and will be requesting those from Jeffrey’s and Jermaine’s family.
