When we took 8 1/2 year old Pumpkin into our hearts, we didn't know what, if any, part of the story was accurate.
If their story is true, the Pomeranian/Chihuahua mixture spent 8 1/2 years as an unloved pariah. She was surrendered to the shelter because of skin allergies. The owner told our staff the family did not want her because she smells …. and they did not want to touch her. They also advised that there "was something wrong with the eye". Pumpkin has a dry eye -- she just needs artificial tears to keep the one eye moist and comfortable. All conversations by the owner with our staff indicated that there was a veterinarian involved in Pumpkin's case history. However, he brought no medication or veterinary report or intelligent discussion about her health history.
When the turn-in report was handed to the office staff, the owners conveniently left the name of the vet off the form. They also said she was spayed; however, he did not include that on the turn-in form.
A check-up was done by our veterinarian who does not believe the dog was spayed. Pumpkin is also in need of a dental which our medical staff will handle. An examination reveals no mange but there is a skin allergy which will be checked on further.
We pursued information as to the veterinarian who saw Pumpkin and were given specific information. When we contacted them, they had no record of the name or address of that person … or the dog.
The sum total of our experience with the person who brought this dog would indicate that the Pumpkin was existing in an unloved, uncared for, irresponsible home in which there was no demonstrative affection given to her. In working with this mixture of Pomeranian and Chihuahua, we find her amenable to being held and loved and returns it tenfold.
She is at the Society's Tinton Falls facility where she is presently in the Medical Dept. for her care. A donation to our Res-Q Fund will help Pumpkin and others in need of special care. For more information, call the Society at 732-922-0100 and refer to File 78471-F or e-mail us.
