SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A deer that had fallen through ice on the Kennebec River on Tuesday morning was rescued by firefighters and game wardens.

Skowhegan Fire Chief Shawn Howard said firefighters were requested to respond by the Maine Warden Service shortly after 10:30 a.m.

The deer fell through the ice near the Skowhegan-Clinton town line, according to Howard.

The chief said he, along with firefighters Linwood Corson, Scott Libby and Capt. Jason Fross assisted Warden Chad Robinson in pulling the doe out of the river using a rescue sled.

After about 20 minutes of warming, the deer was able to stand and walk away under her own power.
