A dog called Gizmo, who has served more time in Battersea Dogs and Cats home than any other waif or stray in history, has become so broken by his situation he has forgotten how to wag his tail.

In many ways, asking a dog to stop wagging his tail is like asking the sun not to shine. Impossible! Sadly, in Gizmo’s case, the woes and hardships of a world gone wrong have conspired to create a situation where the tail just doesn’t wag and the sun doesn’t shine any more.

The Mirror reports that the handsome 6-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier has been in Battersea Dogs and Cats home for five long months, which is five times the average stay for an abandoned pet — and 40 days longer than any other animals staying there.

Even worse, because this handsome and sensitive hound cannot seem to shake his sorrow or overcome his shyness, he has been unable to win over any potential new owners when they come visiting because he just cannot bring himself to greet them and wag his tail.

Whereas Staffordshire bull terriers are usually renowned for their boisterous and ebullient nature, poor old Gizmo seems to have had the unbounded joy, lust for life, and contagious good-natured ways — which makes this breed of dog so popular — knocked out of him by the weight of past experiences and a cruel hand.

Although Gizmo, who was found wandering the streets of north London in July, may be one of the loneliest dogs in the world and has been snubbed by scores of adoptees, he still has a lot of light in his big heart, and it burns brightly for Rehoming Assistant Sarah Parkinson.

Sarah takes Gizmo home every night, but when she returns him to Battersea Dogs and Cats home the next day, he cries and pines for the woman whose acts of kindness have obviously made a huge impact on Gizmo.

Kind-hearted Sarah Parkinson told ITV that she is desperate for Gizmo to find a new home before Christmas.

“Gizmo is an incredibly loving and affectionate dog but he’s a total softie so kennels are proving really hard for him. He’s frightened of traffic, of the dark and even rain – he screws up his face and tries to hide from it.

“It breaks my heart hearing him cry when I put him in his kennel for the day, where he has spent every day for the last five months waiting for someone to choose him. It would be the best present ever for Gizmo to find a new home before Christmas.”

If anyone out there can find Gizmo a home for Christmas, here is the gentle little soul’s Battersea Profile.

Yes!! He's been reserved!!! If you look on the Battersea Dog shelter website you'll see. I hope it works out for him.

So happy for him. The problem (besides me living too far) is that I have a dog at home who would absolutely not accept any other animals in the house. She was here first. So she decides.
