We have a group of homeless cats in our neighborhood. We feed them twice per day. They have a thick box with a warm bed, another bed in a chair and a typical "feral" cat shelter on our porch, for when it snows or rains. They even get cat nip 2-3 times per week. We don't have any mice (we did when we first moved in) and they seem to enjoy hanging out in our yard and on our porch.

What people don't realize is that when you help out homeless animals, it keeps them from wandering and getting hurt - by wildlife, cars, or just plain mean humans.

Last weekend, I stopped at McDonalds to get some nuggets. Dad pointed out that a cat ran behind the bin outside, so I got out of the van and went racing towards the bin, calling, "kitty". It meowed to me, and ran over, let me pet it, but didn't want to be picked up (just like my Gilbert). It was loving the attention. The next thing I knew, a woman and a kid ran over, calling "kitty'. They'd been taking care of it for a year, and claimed that nobody had touched it the entire time. I don't know how they could know that, maybe they were just very careful, not rushing over like me, because I was freezing, and just wanted to make sure it was okay. I'm usually more cautious, letting them come to me.

Anyway, I went back yesterday, and it was gone, so I hope they caught it and took it home. If they were taking care of it for a year, I'm sure they wanted to take it home, and were probably worried that I would try. But it was also freezing here last week. I hope that it is home with them.

We put food out for cats, and they can get into our garage, but I want to do more. My cat Cutie reverted to living outside, when my mum was in the hospital, and we were gone a lot. I want to get him back indoors, and set something up for the cats that he hangs around with. He eats food that we put out by the garage, or sneaks in to eat off the plates on the table (it belongs to the cats now). All of our cats were feral/stray when they were babies.
