Even though I am not a particular religious guy but over the few weeks I have had an inclination to read the Bible.
I have read a few verses in the New testament to help me understand whatI am going through at the moment (depression, amonst other things). And then I stopped reading the Bible.

But last night I open it up and started to read Proverbs. Why do I have a sudden urge to read the Bible whereas in the past I had no interest in it?

Am I looking for salvation? Am I looking for answers to questions I sometimes don't even ask ? What is it?

Hi,
The proverbs contains some of the best wisdoms. It was written by King Solomon who was well known for his wisdom.

May be the universe wants to get you out of your current dilemma.

The psalms contains worship prayers to the supreme being.

I had a month spare, so I read it.
Good anecdotes, often repetitive;
Be good or else, no surprises there.

Skim through the parts you understand, and things of lesser relative importance
- Names, measurements, dates, etc.

The bible is patriarchal and therefore omissive. But you'll work it out.

I just had to know what was in it.

The faster you read the more likely it is that you understand.

The distance between your eyes and the book should be increased, so as more words can be read in each glance. Take rests.
Read about 1 column a second. Look at every word.

-You can be just like jesus!

Are you never going to read it?

You dont need to read it.

The source of infinite wisdom is available to everyone at anytime - listen.

Yang...In addition to the Bible(and there are many versions, all different), you might want to read the following for other perspectives and insight.
The Hindu:
The Rig Veda
The Atharva Veda
The Upanishads
The Bhagavad Gita
The Vishnu Purana
The Garuda Purana
The Hitopadesa(proverbs)etc.

Buddhist:
The Dhammapada(proverbs)etc,
The Diamond Sutra

The Parsi:The Religion Which Might have been Ours

Zoroastrian:
The Zendavesta
The Pahlavi Texts
The Gathas

Islam/Muslim:
The Koran/Quran

Confucianist:
The Li Ki
The Shih King
The Analects of Confucius
The Great Learning
The Doctrineof the Steadfast Man

The Taoist:
The Tao Te King
The works ofChuang Tze

I know I have left many out. If you are not interested in any of this, that is fine. I just feel people should know that there is more written about wisdom etc. than the western mind usually admits to there being.
Also you might find this website of interest: http://www.tombofjesus.com

And this; which has given me a boost in times of doubt:

TO ALL WITH LOVE!
Jesus said, "let him who seeks continue seeking until he finds. When he finds, he will become troubled. When he becomes troubled, he will be astonished, and he will rule over the all."
Jesus said, "Recognize what is in your sight, and that which is hidden from you will become plain to you. For there is nothing hidden which will not become manifest."
From "The Gospel of Thomas"

GOOD FOR YOU.
MOST RELIGIONS HAVE THE SAME PRINCIPLES, SO I DONT REALLY THINK I NEED TO READ ALL ABOUT ALL OF THEM.
THE BIBLE FOR ME SEEMED PROBABLY MORE RELEVANT.
IVE READ A BOOK ON YOGA, ONE ON ZEN, WHAT THE BUDDHA TAUGHT, SHAMANISM, ASTROLOGY, A CARL SAGAN, LITTLE PRINCE, DA VINCI CODE, ALL OF LINDAS BOOKS, HOW TO CAST A NATAL CHART, PRERDICTIVE ASTROLOGY,MOON MAGIC,
I STARTED READING THE GITA BUT DIDNT SEE ANY POINT READING PAST THE OVERVIEW CHAPTER.

THEY ALL COME DOWN TO ONE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT IDEA, LOVE.

Ive studied my name anagram... is there something ive missed???

Hi Monad,
I agree with most of what you said. However each book gives a port hole view of eternity. When in a ship you can get an idea of where you are thru the port hole, yet not the complete picture. So the more port hole you peek at the more complete picture you might get.

May be this is not the best analogy, but after reading Geeta and Bible, thats what I had thought initially.

One thing I can tell about the Gita is that without it ones knowledge is really incomplete. It is one of the first ancient books that talks about atom, etc. The only part which I could not digest is when some of verses contains references to reincarnating as animals. The geeta was written mostly from Oral tradition brought over millions of years ago they say. It is a small book in a greater book called the Mahabharata(the great war). So without understanding Mahabharata it is difficult to understand Geeta. Theres plenty of VHS tapes/DVD available in Indian stores with english subtitles. One of the good ones is produced by BR Chopra(link is reproduced). Not sure if it has subtitles.
http://www.allzonedvd.com/bollywood/misc/mahaboxstory.html

As you can see there are 16 DVDs. Lots of great characters such as sons of God and sons of Man etc...Its fascinating. Its little complicated to grasp each character, I guess you have to be born in India to appreciate each character (Thats my opinion)
There are also seperate DVD on the life and adventures of Krishna. Ofcourse books are other options, but I am very visual and prefer movies than books.

Thought would share.

Regards

Where does it all end though?
I cant read everything, and I find comfort in KNOWing, for I am nothing without it.
Thought noted, thankyou.

So its a good story eh, whats the moral?

Love?

Yeah bible has interesting characters and stories, but I would LIKE to think that I do know what is important, and so, if you feel like there is anything more I need to do before I rid myself completely of self doubt, (what a non sequiter) then I shall continue.

"Have I held anything back from you?"

Dont tell me that I have to read anything unless I really should.

I wish people didnt have to work for their money I wish they got it for their happiness.

How many people are happy in their jobs?
How many?

"A world where everything has happened"

Ok Ill read them all tomorrow, youve convinced me, anything else while Im at it?

monad! I believe you are a searcher for truth and meaning also. You have probably already read books on this: The comparative sayings of Buddha and Jesus. There are different published versions, but it is interesting. And as to John Lennon. A wise soul.

PS.what is your full name or the complete letters? I read dictionaries for learning and pleasure. I would like to see what words I can find in yours. Mine anagrams and lexigrams out to some really cool things!
PPS.You said;Quote: "the war IS over.
a world where everythin has happened."

I am curious as to what you mean by that. I have experience things that make me ask of the meaning you have for it. And yes, one can read much, but that is not the way to find one's self, to become spiritually enlightened. There are many people with college degrees in matters of spiirtuality, religion and philosophy, who are still totally clueless or lost. They have the book smarts only.

Hey Monad,

Who am I to challenge the gospel you live by? I was only vocal because you had a tough time with Geeta and was trying to empathize with you on getting past the overview. That was my only objective.

BTW I liked your personalized gospel. I have asked myself the very questions that you have asked.

Yang, I was raised Catholic and never opened a Bible when I was growing up. Of course, in Mass the Gospels and Epistles are read....so we caught wind of those stories. At a point in my life when I was broken (emotionally) and lost all of my belongings and basically what I considered my whole life....I turned to the Bible. Like I said in other posts, I am able to think for myself and don't conform the doctrinal emphasis crammed down people's throats. I amazed myself by continuing to read from it over the years. There is much comfort and wisdom and yeah...I just skim over the yucky parts. I try to read 3 - 6 chapters in the morning and I feel that it brings me into God's presence.
