someone mentioned SGI and called it a "new age" buddhism. i believe the originator, nicheren daishonen, lived in the 13th century... is that new age...? or is soka gokai ORGANIZATION a new age phenomenon?

Dear rajji,

I'm glad you have found a path that gives you peace, and I realize you probably didn't mean it that way, but your words (quoted above) may be offensive to those who respect that religion and find much value in its teachings.

I think this forum is meant to celebrate unity in diversity while maintaining respect for that diversity, so I wanted to bring it to your attention. May I suggest editing that post to tone it down? Just a thought..

Best wishes,
Sunshine

When I lived in the East Texas Bible Belt at 13-14 years old friends would take me to the one shopping center in town (3 buildings) on Sunday and have me guess which church let out whenever a bunch of cars drove in or by. I got surprisingly good at it and afterwards I could often tell a person's denomination even by little things like how they walked.

and my name is Kerry. I was named after a County in Ireland.

So I guess that makes my name Catholic or Pagan (for those Celtic days)

I came from southern baptist, But no formal religion right now.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baptists

My way through life currently follows some daoist/zen philosophies as a foundation, I am not a strict adherent to them though.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daoism

I have what can be considered folk beliefs, unofficial and BS depending on your point of view.

*Note: BS is belief in anything that cannot be proven by accepted modern science, I do not mean psuedo-science.*

This might be easier to swallow, It is from "The Tao of Pooh" (winnie the pooh) By Bejamin Hoff

http://webpages.charter.net/sn9/literature/pooh.html

"When you wake up in the morning, Pooh," said Piglet at last, "what's the first thing you say to yourself?"
"What's for breakfast? said Pooh. "What do you say, Piglet?"
"I say, I wonder what's going to happen exciting today?" said Piglet.
Pooh nodded thoughtfully.
"It's the same thing," he said.

Through working in harmony with life's circumstances, The taoist understands the changes that others may perceive as negative and he or she can turn them into something positive.

" Not like Pooh, the most effortless Bear we've ever seen."
"Just How do you do it, Pooh?"
"Do What?" asked Pooh.
"Become so Effortless."
"I don't do much of anything," he said.
"But all those things of yours get done."
"They just sort of happen," he said

"While Eeyore frets ...
... and Piglet hesitates
... and Rabbit calculates
... and Owl pontificates
...Pooh just is.

How can you get very far,
If you don't know Who You Are?
How can you do what you ought,
If you don't know What You've Got?
And if you don't know Which to Do
Of all the things in front of you,
Then what you'll have when you are through
Is just a mess without a clue
Of all the best that can come true
If you know What and Which and Who.
--Benjamin Hoff, from the Tao of Pooh

"Well, what do you think, Pooh?" I said.
"Think about what?" asked Pooh.
"The Tao of Pooh, of course."
"The how of Pooh?" asked Pooh.
"Do we have to go through that again?" I said.
"Go through what again?" asked Pooh.
""The Tao of Pooh," I said.
"What's the Tao of Pooh?"
"You know - the Uncarved Block, the Cottleston Pie Principle, the Pooh Way, That Sort of Bear, and all that."
"Oh," said Pooh.
"That's the Tao of Pooh," I said.
"Oh," said Pooh.
"How would you describe it?" I asked.
"Well ... this just came to me," he said, "I'll sing it to you."
"All right."
"Now, then ... (erhum),"

To know the Way,
We go the Way;
We do the Way
The way we do
The things we do.
It's all there in front of you,
But if you try too hard to see it,
You'll only become Confused.

I am me,
And you are you,
As you can see;
But when you do
The things that you can do,
You will find the Way,
And the Way will follow you.

"That's what I think it is," he said.
"Perfect," I said, "But you know, don't you ..."
"Know what?" said Pooh.
"It's the same thing."
"Oh," said Pooh, "so it is."

I let go of organized religion. I don't know what to believe now. Should we even worship an eternal being? Or should we love one? What good does either do?
