In a thread related to my "worship style" thread, just curious, since I've been listening to religious music this morning: what are your favorite spiritual songs? (By "spiritual", I simply mean of a spiritual nature, not necessarily that type of singing--as in "a spiritual").

This song always touches me. The poet and future clergyman wrote the lyrics on the spot when he looked at the slave ship he was running and was instantly transformed. I believe that most people don't ever truly change, but the inspiration behind this song keeps me hopeful and makes me try to see the best in people. He wrote this song and set the slaves free.

Amazing Grace

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

T'was Grace that taught...
my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear...
the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares...
we have already come.
T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far...
and Grace will lead us home.

The Lord has promised good to me...
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be...
as long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
and mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
a life of joy and peace.

When we've been here ten thousand years...
bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise...
then when we've first begun.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

Beautiful song, Platero. Listening now! WOW!!

Just bookmarked it.

I love Elvis Gospel music, that includes How Great Thou Art and Amazing Grace.

When my father was dying, I drove an hour to the hospital both ways, listening to Elvis gospel the whole time. This for several months. It's the only thing that consoled me. Here's my favorite Elvis gospel song:

You'll Never Walk Alone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN8oN8I3lrk

And I love the old gospel hymn "This World Is Not My Home." A punk rock version:

Wow, I just looked up a Bollywood movie on YouTube and was blown away by the religious music at the beginning.

It's short, just in the first 40 seconds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-zSls4b__o

Thought I would share it.

____________

Edit: It finally occurred to me that I should mention I spent a number of years psalm singing, in the style of the old reformed Presbyterians, using a psalter (the book of Psalms re-written to match a given meter, set to a tune and sung a capella). There are a number of tunes you can use for a number of psalms, switching the tunes and psalms around. Which I like.

This would still be my preference, if I attended Christian church services. This is what was sung at my wedding...not this psalm, but something similar:

I like upbeat joyful music of all types when I want to worship God, as He is joy to me.

However, if there is one song that really touched me and it is a slow song. She is so humble and that humility is what I desire.

^ Thanks for sharing that, I love your taste, Platero.

Mine is more rough around the edges and eclectic.

Tonight I'm loving this song by Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam:
The Boy with the Moon and Star http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOwN48haHew&feature=related

(Not that I take any special interest in Islam or am trying to be political.)

My Sweet Lord ~ George Harrison
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMgCpb1nli4

"My Sweet Lord"

My sweet lord
Hm, my lord
Hm, my lord

I really want to see you
Really want to be with you
Really want to see you lord
But it takes so long, my lord

My sweet lord
Hm, my lord
Hm, my lord

I really want to know you
Really want to go with you
Really want to show you lord
That it won't take long, my lord (hallelujah)

My sweet lord (hallelujah)
Hm, my lord (hallelujah)
My sweet lord (hallelujah)

I really want to see you
Really want to see you
Really want to see you, lord
Really want to see you, lord
But it takes so long, my lord (hallelujah)

My sweet lord (hallelujah)
Hm, my lord (hallelujah)
My, my, my lord (hallelujah)

I really want to know you (hallelujah)
Really want to go with you (hallelujah)
Really want to show you lord (aaah)
That it won't take long, my lord (hallelujah)

Hmm (hallelujah)
My sweet lord (hallelujah)
My, my, lord (hallelujah)

Hm, my lord (hare krishna)
My, my, my lord (hare krishna)
Oh hm, my sweet lord (krishna, krishna)
Oh-uuh-uh (hare hare)

Now, I really want to see you (hare rama)
Really want to be with you (hare rama)
Really want to see you lord (aaah)
But it takes so long, my lord (hallelujah)

Jesus Is Just Alright ~ Doobie Brothers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bh4nNdNJ_U8

Jesus is just alright with me, Jesus is just alright, oh yeah
Jesus is just alright with me, Jesus is just alright

I don't care what they may say
I don't care what they may do
I don't care what they may say
Jesus is just alright, oh yeah
Jesus is just alright

Jesus is just alright with me, Jesus is just alright, oh yeah
Jesus is just alright with me, Jesus is just alright

I don't care what they may know
I don't care where they may go
I don't care what they may know
Jesus is just alright, oh yeah

Jesus, he's my friend; Jesus, he's my friend
He took me by the hand; Led me far from this land
Jesus, he's my friend

Jesus is just alright with me, Jesus is just alright, oh yeah
Jesus is just alright with me, Jesus is just alright

I don't care what they may say, I don't care what they may do
I don't care what they may say, Jesus is just alright, oh yeah

(btw Jesus is more than alright with me, but I still like the song and Doobies. Just a hippie at heart )

I've wondered if the emphasis was on "Just" in this song... and in need of a comma. Will have to do some research for fun.....could be two different interps or ways of "hearing" it.

(Just as in justness...being fair, righteousness)
