This is based off of a thread on a different forum:

Abraham and Sarah went to Egypt in Gen 20-12 and led Sarah to lie in Gen 12:11-13.

I'm curious what folks take is on this?

From what I recall its because he was trying to protect her from ending up in a Harem. In which case its likely he would have been killed so that she would no longer be his wife, and therefore available...

Mostly he was just protecting his own ass, since her being his sister still left her available to be thrown into the Harem

More or less, my take on it is Abraham was using an example of deception over outright dishonesty, and to preserve their lives not just for the gain he received in so doing.

Apparently as the recounting goes, the Most High did not mind as he inflicted plagues on Pharaoh until he not only freed Sarah, but he recompensed Abraham for the misstep.

They are all jerks in my opinion...

Abraham lied to save his own ass;
Pharaoh was a sex maniac;
Yahweh... uhhh where to begin with that ******* !;

:rollseyes:

Ahh the Bible, a paragon of morality!

Endlessly entertaining

Not at all, in many ways the Bible merely catalogs foibles that existed then, and are still around today.

I don't bother with the Yahweh stuff, colossal waste of time.

For someone who dislikes religion/bible... I know way too much about it lol

Funny that

I guess being a Levitical scribe all those years ago, leaves the old tales lingering

Well, I think my point is, things are not always what some would like them to be in the Bible.

IMO, this is Abraham implementing Christ's injunction:

"be ye wise as serpents, but gentle as doves"

Abraham did come out ahead of the game by deceiving Pharaoh, but he did no physical harm to him.
