Children are dying because of these abusive evil teachings and practices.
Many more are suffering horribly or are being emotionally scarred for life or brainwashed to grow up and do the same to other children.

First published in 1994, the book "To Train Up a Child" has led to the deaths of at least 3 children and has led to the neglect and abuse of untold numbers of other children. With over 625,000 English language copies in print, the book has also been translated into many other languages - and is sold around the world.

Over the years, the authors, Michael & Debi Pearl have ardently and cavalierly defended the abusive, neglectful parental instructions in "To Teach Up a Child". Between them, they have authored 14 books and 8 booklets which, combined, have sold millions. Much of what they write, deals with marriage, "child training", and homeschooling.

Through donations and book, CD and DVD sales, the Pearls and their ministry, No Greater Joy, make an estimated $1.7 million a year.

According to their website, nogreaterjoy.org, "No Greater Joy" is the ministry of Michael & Debi Pearl - and is operated under the auspices of No Greater Joy Ministries Inc.. Michael has been a pastor, missionary, and evangelist for over 40 years. The Pearls have 5 children, all home-schooled, who have grown up to become missionaries and "church leaders." Though allegedly holding a degree from the Mid-South Bible College (now Victory University), when Michael is asked for his credentials on child training, he points to his five children.

Neither Michael nor his wife, Debi, have any formal training or education in fields relevant to child psychology or child rearing. And, as we all know, simply having children does not make you an expert, nor does it qualify you to give parenting advice. If anything, the advice the Pearl's are giving should disqualify them from ever being around children.

However, according to their website:
"Through books and tapes, the Pearls are training parents to break the bad habits passed down from former generations and to recognize and emulate the wisdom of those who have gone before. The Bible and common sense are the foundations for effective parenting."

Their "ministry" is allegedly entirely nonprofit, overseen by a board of directors. No Greater Joy Ministries is registered with the State of Tennessee and complies with all statutes as a non-profit religious organization.

The Pearls allegedly do not receive royalties from the sale of their "child training materials." According to their website, "The profits from sales are used to propagate the Gospel of Jesus Christ through missionaries and the production of new materials on parenting and the home."

That's right, the Pearl's and their child-abuse-and-neglect-encouraging "ministry" are subsidized by taxpayers - allowing them to rake in millions of dollars, tax-free, some percentage of which they then use to further indoctrinate children - and encourage yet more parents to abuse and neglect their children. But it's all good, because they're religious and it's done in the name of "God" and Jesus, right?

In addition to selling the book, free copies of "To Train Up a Child" are also commonly given out in churches and sent to military families.

Id be the last person to agree with a methodology of child rearing based on Biblical teachings, but this whole book burning-witch hunt seem abit too fascist for my liking

I'm more concerned with the parents who are choosing to buy and use such things as methods of child rearing, what is causing them to make those choices?

What they are doing is pretty despicable... No argument from me there.

But fortunately... Even scum like that are allocated the right to freedom of speech

Its the parents who USE his methods... to me they are the ones really at fault!

Do you really think that even if you were able to destroy all of their works, websites, every trace of their existence that it would stop parents making a complete mess of child rearing...?

Its just a dark path when we starting saying who can and who cant publish various works no matter what the content.

The problems always occur on really sticky topics such as these, but who makes the judgment call?

That is an interesting question and I can't say why. A lot of toxic fundie lit that promotes hate or abuse serves their beliefs somehow, yet I don't see how books like that do. But I expect it gets promoted at fundie bookstores, they have all kinds of crazy books for sale.

I did look it up on Amazon to see if I could get some insight into its appeal but every single review I could see was one star that condemned it (some with excerpts on why they hated it, and that includes Christians by the way who bought it and came to despise it):

However, it did have 5-star reviews so I clicked to view those only and I saw that even those were often sarcastic, snarky, or otherwise not really supportive. For example, this 5-star review:

Yes even in these modern times people still do horrible things to their children because of religion. The other two Abrahamic religions;
Islam and Judaism are no better.
The teachings in the child raising book give these people with the fear of god in them, all the instructions and reasons to justify abusing and even killing their children
and is wholeheartedly accepted because the bible also tells them so.
A few examples of the bronze age insanity of dealing with one's own children;
so here is not including treatment of other children which were to be sex slaves and so forth.

Though I wanted to say it's not just gay teens who get kidnapped and tortured (sometimes to death which is why many of the worst are in other countries catering to rich American parents) but all sorts. A friend of mine was disappeared this way for her interest in Wicca and came back about 6 months later brainwashed into believing we were all Satanists.
