No, this isn't a SPITR thread.

I don't know how many here have been exposed to Chick tracts (heck, I was about raised on them as I found them laying about everywhere in Texas) but if you have then you'll probably appreciate this (and if you're not familiar with them then this site explains them briefly):

I thought I'd add my favorite Chick parody in which Mystery Science Theater 3000 (which makes fun of bad movies) is forced to read (and thus mock) an actual Chick tract:

As someone who has dabbled in roleplaying games, including D&D (that this is about), I about cried at the richly deserved mockery Jack Chick gets.

And Jerry the vampire (at the beginning)? I wonder if that inspired the vampire in the Fright Night remake to be named Jerry of if it's just a coincidence? (Btw, I've also played Vampire: the Masquerade.)

I listen to a Bible studies podcast pretty regularly, and funnily enough that Chick tract was mentioned, and yea its pretty hilarious

But I had never looked it up until now

One thing though: And this is not directed at you Pix, just a general observation.

Something I feel has somehow become a misconception over the years in relation to Cthulhu:

Yes he did eat a few sailors who stumbled upon him, but as to him devouring all of mankind in a "Revelations-esq Apocalypse..." Well Im not sure when or where that belief started, because in the "Call of Cthulhu" whats said about his return is this:

quote:
"That cult would never die till the stars came right again, and the secret priests would take great Cthulhu from His tomb to revive His subjects and resume His rule of earth. The time would be easy to know, for then mankind would have become as the Great Old Ones; free and wild and beyond good and evil, with laws and morals thrown aside and all men shouting and killing and revelling in joy. Then the liberated Old Ones would teach them new ways to shout and kill and revel and enjoy themselves, and all the earth would flame with a holocaust of ecstasy and freedom."

My first thought is that the last lines are misconstrued as an actual fiery apocalypse

quote:
and all the earth would flame with a holocaust of ecstasy and freedom."

But that's metaphor, not literal... [Shakes Tentacled Head]

So... doesnt seem like Cthulhu himself is particularly interested in eating up mankind. But teaching mankind how to eat and kill each other in interesting ways...? That remains to be seen

Never was much of a Cthulhu girl.

Church of the Starry Wisdom and the Innsmouth Evolution are of interest...

Did you know it was one of his last Tales, and Lightning DID strike St. John's within view of Lovecraft's window?

(Think he was traveling at the time, though.)

Written in response to one by Robert Bloch, was it? (like many in Lovecraft's circle, they were in correspondence with one another.)

Yup.

Then there was the one with the Non-Euclidean Angles lying all about the place, and that really cool one about Charles Dexter Ward setting it all up for when he reincarnated himself.

Lovecraft was SO awesome.
