I read somewhere that in modern times the Seven Hellish Vices correspond to certain psychological problems;

Sol: Superbia/Pride: Narcissism
Mercurius: Invidia/Envy: Inferiority Complex
Venus: Luxuria/Lust: Hypersexuality
Luna: Acedia/Sloth: Depression
Mars: Ira/Wrath: Intermittent Explosive Disorder
Iupiter: Gula/Gluttony: Addiction
Saturnus: Avaritia/Greed: Hoarding

Then I remember hearing if religion is superstition without science and if science without religion is cruelity, then this has to be a little evidence supporting that, right?
And hey, maybe these problems are what more scientific people could call the 'seven sins'.

I'd say "science without empathy" is cruelty, as opposed to "science without religion." Religion promotes a lot of harm and injustice after all. Not to say that's all they promote, but it's pretty thick (such as the promotion of slavery and worse), especially in the older ones, even if it would seem to go against "golden rules" (which nearly every religion also has).

As for creating 7 sins, that's an arbitrary number, but I suppose if one wanted to reconcile say Catholicism with the social sciences (as opposed to the hard sciences) then yeah, that's a neat way to do it. I prefer it that way myself, too, as it leads to less abuse (like the old indulgences sold by the church and how easy it is to manipulate people by deciding SUBJECTIVELY when something is a sin to make them obedient to church & state by making them apply ONLY when they want them to, and then ordering the sin to be practiced as a virtue and saying you were sinning if you refused to sin--need examples?), and it's clearer that it's not the indulgence or act itself but the obsessions and out of control behavior that's bad. (Likewise, the so-called "virtues" can also become toxic if they become obsessive, just like the vices. Again, need examples?)

I don't really think the sins (or virtues for that matter) were created per say, but I think it's more of pointing out major flaws and trying to over come them.
You are right though, too much of anything is never good, like greedy churches selling indulgences, or the crusades fought for a 'holy land' and then saying a sin is in the name of god so it's good. Then science without empathy... I've never thought of it that way. I suppose it makes a little more sense than science without religion. Thanks for that view, PixieJane.

Oops, just now saw this. What doesn't make sense to me is Luna sloth and Mercury envy.

Given Luna was considered to be the 'good' feminine, and Cancer was the sign of home and family, Luna would be diligent at creating a home. If she does not, she 'sins' with Acedia. As for Mercurius being Invidia... you got me there.
Corresponding virtues are:
Sol: Humilitas/Humility
Mercurius: Benevolentia/Benevolence
Venus: Castitas/Chastity
Luna: Industria/Diligence
Mars: Patientia/Patience
Iupiter: Temperantia/Temperance
Saturnus: Caritas/Charity
