Does Mercury conjunct Neptune in a natal chart signify a compulsive liar?

I have a close friend who has a Mercury/Neptune conjunction in Sagittarius in her chart. She is sharp as a whip, but has the ability to tell some VERY tall tales, mostly to fit her favor. She'll take a mundane event, and weave it into this intricate, amazing story that captivates everyone. You believe her completely, but sometimes she's outright lying! The story won't even reflect the true facts.

The weird thing is, she believes the lies as she's telling them. It's like that movie Big Fish. She can turn events around to the point of falsehood. She's not a bad person or anything, but she just sugar coats her actions and past events, and downright lies sometimes and it bothers me! The positive parts of this aspect in her is that she can really inspire people with her words, and she's a great motivator.

You would think having the conjunction of Sagittarius of all signs, that she would be overly honest and blunt, but she's not. I'm not making a generalization about everyone with this aspect, but anyone have any experiences or know more about it?

LOL. Yes. Love the neptune in saying pleasant things that are not real. And, there is no definition of lies in Neptune world. Everything imagined can be true there!!

Hm, yes it is very possible. I have Mercury in the 12th but I am no where near making up fairytales, etc, quite the opposite. It might be that other signs in my chart out influence me. I think that tendency is stronger in those who have Mercury-Neptune aspects and Mercury in Pisces.

I am a Libra and I have Jupiter conjunct Neptune on the cusp of my 10th and 11th houses and I am very good at seeing the positive side of my friends and inspiring their careers. I think there is a place for everyone and your friend is meant to be who she is for a reason. :^) But then... I always see the positive side... ;^) hehe not really I AM a Libra. But I do vibe strongly with the idea that you create your own reality and I heard it said once in a book about marriage and family counseling that you should never say anything about your loved ones that you don't want to come true or don't want them to become. If you look at that in a metaphysical sense it is akin to cursing them. You call your husband a dirty liar and put the force of horrible anger and hurt behind it ... or you tell you loved ones how good they are and how much you believe in them and then they tend to take that energy into themselves and live up to it. And that, in a very real way demonstrates cause and effect and Instant Karma because so many blessings come back to you when you bless and promote the good qualities in your friends... or rather, the high energy side of the quality.
I guess you activated that Jup/Nep thing. :^D

I saw this this morning and it has me smiling today:
http://www.youaretrulyloved.com/enlightenment/simple-genuine-dogma-free-spirituality/

And I love how you explained your friend. That is exactly what I thought before I opened the thread and it was great hearing you confirm those thoughts. I love the movie Big Fish, own the dvd, and cry my eyes out every time I watch it.

I have something similar

My Mercury is in 18'21 Scorpio, and so it is in the Pisces decanate

The Sabian Symbol for 19 Scorpio
A Parrot Repeats The Conversation that has been heard
"the capacity to transmit transcendental knowledge"

I have Mercury parallel Neptune, and that's like a conjunction. In declination equivalent longitude, it's Mercury conjunct Neptune.

" Your mind does not function in a linear, logical manner and you are often unable to express your thoughts in simple, everyday language. Symbols, images, art, or music better express your ideas. Flights of imagination and fantasy carry you into strange and beautiful worlds, and you could develop the ability to transcribe some of your perceptions to share with others, for example, by writing fantasy, fiction, lyrics, or poetry. You are sensitive to nuances and possess intuitive or psychic gifts, but you may become confused between imagination and true perception. You have a strong mystical and idealistic bent, and have difficulty concentrating your attention on practical or mundane activities. You are strongly attracted to metaphysical and spiritual topics."

I also have Neptune in 3rd.
"Daydreaming, lack of concentration, and inattention to your surroundings can be problems for you. Your mind tends to wander unless you are using it in an imaginative, creative way. Dry facts and cold logic hold no appeal for you, and unless a subject has a colorful or personally inspiring element, you won't stick with it for long. You have a sensitive, intuitive bent."

I even have Mercury conjunct Sun/Neptune midpoint.
"You are very intuitive and imaginative. While others often need scientific proof, you very often prefer to trust your intuition. You also have a good appreciation for poetry and literature. Any subject that is taught in a dry, formal, unimaginative manner bores you, and, as an adult, you may consider yourself, very inept in various subject areas only because they were presented to you in a very dry manner when you were young. Sometimes your imagination and your inclination to create fantasies or fictional stories can make it difficult for you to concentrate on studies, disinclining you to throw yourself wholeheartedly into academics."

heck....I even have Mars square Mercury/Neptune midpoint.
"You have exceptional ability in some areas and are rather weak in others. At an early age it is possible that you developed a fear of some technical and scientific areas, which would be unfortunate because actually you can be competent in these areas. You are very good at picking up on fine nuances of meaning in literature, poetry, and art. You have a very imaginative and creative mind, but you can become confused if overloaded with too much information at one time."

I can relate to everything that those configurations say. It fits with the nonlinear, right brain hemisphere, picture, visual thinking/learning of my neurodivergence of Dyslexia,Dyspraxia,ADHD which tends to be misunderstood by more left brain hemisphere, neurotypical(normal brained) types because it's so confusing, hard to pin down. ......heck I can easily be confused with linear, leftbrained concepts.

as a child, I could relate to all that stuff that you said about your friend. I think that it was more of an escapism from dealing with hardships in my life like abuse by my parents and being picked on a lot by my peers as well as wanting to be something that I am not because of my low self esteem, especially from not fitting the norms of society what a person and a boy should be.

I grew up confused in so many ways, and took a long time to gain clarity in my life. I feel that Astrology,Numerology, learning about my neurodivergent conditions, and reading some metaphysical books have helped me understand myself.

the interpretations for my aspects and midpoint pictures are from Kepler Astrology program.

Here is the chart of someone I know who, shall we say "struggles" with reality. This person seems to be allergic to the telling the truth if it could in anyway reflect less that perfectly on him. He often gazes off into space when relaying supposed events that took place, and his version of the story is always that HE was the best at something, and everyone else couldn't even compare, or HE was the voice of reason, telling everyone else what was right from wrong, or something somebody supposedly said to him telling him how fantastic he did something or how fantistic he is beyond compare... blah. I can't even pay attention anymore when he talks. It's pretty much all BS.

He lies about the little things too, like who he was talking to on the phone, even though nobody really cares whether he was talking to his mother or his pal or the freeking queen of England. He makes up all kinds of drama too. If he's late he'll call and say he was attacked by a pack of thugs and is hiding out in a gas station waiting for them to leave...it's ridiculous. His stories constantly get him in trouble but he keeps on doing it, like he doesn't know how NOT to lie.

By the way this person is only 15 years old.

Only 15? Plenty of time to channel those creative impulses into a more productive directon.

Poet and novelist George Mackay Brown is just one person who springs to mind as having succeeded in handling tense Mercury/Neptune energy in just this way. Great for fans like me who get to enjoy reading his books though he is long gone in person.

I have it too. Also in Sag. Neptune even conj my MC and co-rules my Asc.

And I CAN do it. I've been a great storyteller all my life - I started in kindergarten. Fairytales. I love watching people fascinated be what I say.

But I don't lie. I'm the worst at it. I can't remember the lie, I get all blushed and my voice trembles, and my palms are all wet. I tried it for a few times as a teenager. I gave it up.

A lot easier to just tell the truth. I'm Scorpio Moon conj Uranus, and Aqua Asc - I love a good fight for my right to do what I want! this is usualy the reason people lie, so... I don't need to.

I also cannot trust a situation when too many lies are involved - and my Scorpio Moon needs to know how things are. this is like the definition of Scorpio Moon.

So - please don't jump to conclusions.

Aqua Asc opp Leo Saturn,7th
Cap Sun-Venus, 11th sextile Sco Moon,9th-Uranus,8th
Sag MC-Neptune-Mercury,10th; Mercury opp Gem Jupiter, 4th
Leo Mars,6th

I think that it's true that people with aspect are capable of weaving tall tales, as it were, but how that plays out really depends on what outlets the person has for this tendency.

I have an ex-boyfriend with the exact placement as your friend and much of what Glaucus wrote about the conjunction was true for my ex, except that he's an atheist. So just remove the mystical stuff

Anyhow, he is in advertising so I think most of that energy went into his career as opposed to being used in his private and social life.

It seems to me that perhaps your friend is not using this creative quality in a healthy manner.

you'd think mercury opp neptune would be worse right? my close friend has this and she VERY VERY blunt. it depends on other aspects. whats in the 3rd, planets in the 3rd..any connection to mars? its hard with sag mercury because of being detriment..its already at a disadvantage, plus sag like to stretch the truth. i think it would make someone an interesting speaker
its more to it than 1 aspect alone but it doesnt help.

RE: the person who's chart I displayed...some of his lies include

a) He is an orphan (not true, he has a mom, and adopted dad, a step mom and a step dad, and a natural father who he has never met.
b) His dad is in Iraq (we're Canadian. Canada is not even in Iraq, and his dad is not even in the military.
c) He is a foster child. (he lives with his dad, but spends alot of time at his mom's. He WILL be foster child if he doesn't smarten up soon)
d) He's dieing of cancer. This one had several girls at his school upset, in tears and talking to the counsilor about how sad it was
e)He seems to get attacked, beat up, chased, everywhere he goes, and that makes him perpetually late for everything. Oddly, he never has a mark on him, except for those he makes himself, like papercuts on his wrist. But that's another story, to do with his supposed suicide attempts.
f) when he was 13 he stole his mother's wedding ring and gave it to his girlfreind, who was 15. He told her he was 16 but had a growing disease. She felt sorry for him and agreed to go out with him. Once she found out the ring was stollen from his mom and he was only 13, it was over.

There's more but those are the major ones. Generally, his lies are mainly tools for getting sympathy so he can get off the hook or get his way. OR, to make himself look good in the eyes of gullable people.

Hi Lionseye,

Your friend who lies a lot, he has one of the most defensive, self protecting charts I've ever seen. One thing for everyone to remember is, first and formost, lying is a defense mechanism. A child will lie to protect themselves from being hurt. Yes, children make up stories or will sometimes lie to get what they want because they are natural narcisists (sp?) but the main reason for anyone to lie is to protect themselves.

In your 15 year old friend's case, it appears that he has lived with so much hurt and abandonment (even though he has all those parents, it appears that he has had to protect himself FROM THEM. If this is the correct time for his chart, he has had an extremely difficult father or father figure(s) in his life. Some event at the age of 4 or 5 really did a number on him. It also appears that his mother or maternal figures are not available to him in the warmest or normal maternal ways, and yet she seems to wear the pants in the family. His home life is very hard, not the way it may appear to friends and outsiders. There's also a lot of depression with him.

Perhaps he'll have some kind of an awakening when he gets older. The teen years are an incredibly strong focus time for life development and he feels like he has an awful fot of himself and his life to hide. He'd rather be this pathetic liar than show the world what his life really is like.

She is definitely an inspirational speaker. When she talks, people listen, and become inspired and motivated. I wonder if Tony Robbins has this placement? LOL! But it would be wonderful if she used her powers for good, instead of to lie so much.

Mercury dominates my chart, and it is squared saturn. I can't stand it when people lie, and for no good reason. It's like Lionseye's friend who lies about little things that don't really matter.

I don't even think it's a defense mechanism. She just likes to make things more dramatic and exciting fo the people listening. She's a Big Fish! LOL!

No,

Tony Robbins doesn't have mercury conjunct neptune, but he does have something similar.

Stationary Mercury in Pisces, and it's closely conjunct the South Node in Pisces. The conjunction is in late Pisces, and so it's actually in the constellation of Pisces.

He also has Sun in Pisces trine Neptune in Scorpio. Sun in Aquarius constellation trine Neptune in Libra constellation.

he was born on February 29, 1960 in Glendora,California

he's really lived up to his master number birthday. that's for sure!

His Venus is conjunct the South Neptune Node - collective inspiration, imagination

His Sun squares the Uranus Nodes - collective innovation, independence

His Mars squares the Eris Nodes - collective ideology, diversity

Hey!

I have mercury conjunct neptune (and mercury conunct jupiter, and jupiter conjunct neptune all in Sag in the 7th house)

I think if you combine the passion, philosophy and expansive nature of Sag with the wit and itelligence of Mercury, you may have someone who loves to just tell a good story whether its just a rehash of the day, a way of speaking their mind, or if they are trying to convince you they are right!

A friend said that I could have a gift as a motivational speaker yesterday when I was telling her how great it was that she was graduating college and how hardworking she is! I thought it was silly (Capricorn modesty), but you never know!

Does your friend have lots of fire or Leo in her chart? She may like to dramatize (harmlessly) and feel the excitment of having everyone's attention on her.

I have Mercury and Neptune conjunct in Sag. I admit if I want to weave false tales I can be very good at it. But my Scorpio sun and moon would never cooperate. My Merc/Nep conjunction is very useful in my chosen field of work -- creative/entertainment/media.

Neptune's honest, in its own way. It's too amorphous to care for crystallized facts, but it does reveal truths. Neptune is the truth of archetypes communicated through myths. It's our deepest moods as humans.

Your Merc-Neptune friend seems to be putting Mercury at the service of Neptune: using facts as symbols of a deeper truth. What's more important to Neptune than relaying the correct facts is using facts to touch the correct place inside of us.

But obviously facts do matter. Not just for ethical reasons, but also because lies destroy intimacy. I think that's one of the reasons the 12th house is connected with imprisonment. Lies isolate people, truth sets them free.

Maybe it's more complicated than that though. Maybe someone with a Neptune-Mercuy cnj feels alone UNLESS they speak in metaphors. Maybe Neptune is such a big part of how they understand the world, that those tales are the only way they feel like they can express what they know.

Is your friend incapable of being honest? Does she ever speak in plain Mercury talk?

Eve, I have really been pondering the meaning of the 12th house, and the issues surrounding it such as imprisonment, deceipt, etc and what you said really throws a light on it. One "possibility" is since it's the house of self undoing it could possibly play out that the 12th house ruled by Neptune can be an imprisonment to one's own self by lies and deceipt whether to ourselves or to others. People always think imprisonment like jail or asylums, which very well may be the case, but you bring a whole new possibility to consider.

Thank you for that wisdom!

I am so with you on this thing called you-create-your-own-reality. I think in Psychology they call it Law of Effect, which simply means "we get more of whatever we reinforce". I hope people won't see it as a bad thing like escaping reality or being "in denial".

MBlover

Thank you, you made my day. Hee hee! However, I think we should also give part of the credit to my Libra stellium.

I wouldn't necessarily call them compulsive liars, but then again, I tend to think the aspect points more to a high level of imagination. Even if it does involves Neptune.

I would think it would accentuate the imaginative nature of the person and make them prone to seeing things or communicating things in a more idealistic way.

Another way of seeing Mercury conjunct Neptune is as a form of subjective perception. I don't think most of them tend to intentionally lie, but they may be too attached to their own version of reality and their own form of perception to distinguish between 'general reality' and their truth.

No. What Ruben said.

Maybe if either planet linked to the 3rd, both in negative aspect, or a square to the Mercury/Neptune conjunction.

I agree, but to me it doesn't matter if it's their "intention" to lie or not. If they lie, it's a LIE. The words "subjective perception" basically means they see the world from their point of view only, and make up whatever story they need to back up their perspective on things. They need to take into consideration reality and the collective, and have a sense of right and wrong.

I love my Neptunian friends, but sometimes they have so much gray that there is no right and wrong to them anymore.

GemGemGem, you're right in the sense that their personalized reality doesn't always connect to the universal reality. But by subjective perception, I actually meant that they might perceive things differently, maybe their filter of perception is more adaptable. One thing I noticed about Neptunian people is that they seem to have a pretty flexible mental system. The lack of a concrete sense of right or wrong seems to be there, but it seems to be derived mostly from the absence of boundaries and the fact that they're so adaptable. When I interact with them, I get the sense that they feel the need to consider things from multiple perspectives and they see something valid in almost every option. It's almost like they can't exclude any perspectives.

How many degrees indicate a conjunction between these planets? I generated my natal chart on two different websites and one says I don't have this conjunction and the other says I do.
