Secondary Progressions: The Clock of Life Ticking Away

by Robert P. Blaschke

As the earth turns daily on its polar axis, our satellite, the Moon, is continually orbiting around us, while simultaneously both are orbiting annually around the Sun. The contemplative individual may ask if this apparent linkage between one day, one month and one year means anything. What do these three concurrent celestial motions have to do with each other? Is there a metaphysical equivalency to them? Is time itself real, symbolic or a combination of the two?
The astrological calculation techniques of directions and progressions, which take the fixed karmic imprint of the natal or event chart, and move it forward or backward through time, both real and symbolic, have been used by astrologers for centuries to either predict the future, understand the past, or gain perspective about the present.
These calculation techniques; including transits, solar arcs, primary / secondary / tertiary / minor directions /progressions and the like, are the opportunity for the astrologer to witness and observe the hands of the clock of life tick away the karma of the life path between the birth and the death of a human being, a nation, an event or any other
earthly phenomena infused with a life force moving through time. In this article we shall look at the calculation technique called secondary progressions, which moves the birth chart forward one day for each year of life lived.
Thus, the first day of your life is equivalent to the first year of your life, the second day the second year and so on. This calculation allows the consulting astrologer to jump in at any time during your life, compute the progressed positions of your natal planets, compare them by house and by angularity to the birth horoscope, and then provide helpful cyclical analysis or comforting perspective about any chapter of life one is passing through.
To understand the relative importance of secondary progressed natal planets or angles, it is critical to keep two things in mind:
1) The secondary progressed chart is not a stand-alone chart, but draws its relevance from its comparison to the natal chart, and
2) The length of progressed planetary influence varies widely because of the
daily motion of the planets being either faster or slower than their mean (average) motion at any given time, as they approach or pull away from stations (reversing of motion from retrograde to direct or vice-versa). The following table will help to show the daily, and thus yearly by secondary progression, mean motion of the planets:

Table 1: Planetary Travel
Planet Average / Daily Motion Retrograde / Motion
Sun 0 59' 08" none
Moon 13 10' 35" none
Mercury 1 23' 20-24 days three times a year
Venus 1 12" 40-43 days every 1 1/2 years
Mars 0 31' 27" 58-81 days every 2 years
Jupiter 0 04' 59" 4 months yearly
Saturn 0 02' 01" 4 1/2 months yearly
Uranus 0 00' 42" 155 days yearly
Neptune 0 00' 24" 158 days yearly
Pluto 0 00' 15" 160 days yearly
If, within the system of secondary progressions, one day's planetary travel is equivalent to one year of life, we can see that the Moon progresses most rapidly (12-14 per year), the Sun, Mercury and Venus progress much more slowly (1-2 per year), Mars progresses even slower (0.5-0.75 per year), Jupiter even slower still (up to 0.2 per year), and the outer planets of Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto progress so slowly as to have no consequential effects whatsoever during the lifetime, except to tighten or spread the orbs of natal aspects. Because the planetary orbits are elliptical, not circular, planetary motion will accelerate or retard, causing faster or slower travel through the various degrees of the Zodiac.
In this system, the natal midheaven can also be progressed 0 59' 08" per year, using the Naibod arc technique (360 Zodiac ÷ 365.25 days per year). Retaining the latitude of birth (not using the current home latitude as in Solar Return calculations), once the midheaven is progressed, the progressed ascendant can be ascertained. These progressed birth chart angles are not used to create progressed horoscope houses with different cusp degrees, but rather to find the progressed natal angles forming conjunctions, squares, trines or oppositions to the natal planets.

The calculation of the secondary progressed planets can be accomplished using a computer or an ephemeris; the latter provided you have knowledge of the ACD technique (adjusted calculation date) - the ACD shows you which day of the year in a given person's life equals the ephemeris position of the planets. For client consultations, I
recommend using a computer, calculating the Naibod secondary progressed position of the natal planets, midheaven and ascendant for the progressed date you want, and then printing a natal/progressed bi-wheel chart with the secondary progressed planets put into the natal houses in the outer wheel of the chart. This is for the client's visual benefit, so they can see the progressed Moon, for example, moving through the natal houses and
applying to, or separating from, aspects to the natal planets or angles.
When consulting with a client about their secondary progressions, it is best to present them with the planetary influences described by windows of time, rather than degrees and orbs. Prior to the consultation, the astrologer can prepare for the appointment by listing all progressed planets or angles within a 2 ½ total orb of aspecting the natal planets or angles by conjunction, square, trine or opposition. I have not found progressed semisextiles, semisquares, sextiles, quintiles, sesquiquadrates or quincunxes to have much conscious relevance to the life experience of the client. Use a 1 ½ applying orb, and a 1 separating orb, to keep your window of time descriptions to the client as accurate as possible. For the progressed Moon aspects to the natal chart, for example, convert orb degrees into months, as the progressed Moon is moving approximately 1 per month. Find the 2 ½ month range of time the progressed Moon aspect will be occurring (1 1/2
months before exact - 1 month after exact), and present these dates to your client. For the progressed Sun aspects to the natal chart, for example, convert orb degrees into years, as the progressed Sun is moving approximately 1 per year. Find the 2 ½ year range of time the progressed Sun aspect will be occurring (1 ½ years before exact - 1 year after exact), and present these dates to your client.
For thorough astrological synthesis during a consultation with a client, their transits must be reviewed along with the secondary progressions. There is especially a synchronous relationship between the transit cycle of Saturn and the progressed Sun/Moon (synodic lunation) phases (both 29 ½ years in length). Also, simultaneous angles being
formed by transit and progression to the same natal planet are very life-changing.

You will find these calculation and interpretation tips to be useful in working with secondary progressions:

1) Progressed Moon changing signs or natal houses • shifts in emotional focus

2) Progressed Sun/Moon phase • relationship between the subconscious and the conscious

3) Sabian Symbol for the exact degree of progressed New or Full Moons • a 14-15 year subtle energy pattern operating within the individual

4) Natal house containing the progressed Moon • where memories from 27
1/3 years ago (sidereal progressed lunation) will surface

5) Current progressed Moon sign • compare to natal Moon sign for reevaluation of habits

6) Progressed ascendant-descendant aspecting natal planet (Q T S R) • relationship changes

7) Progressed midheaven-nadir aspecting natal planet (Q T S R) • home/career changes
8) Progressed Moon aspecting natal planet • 2 ½ month emotional episode

9) Progressed Sun-Mercury-Venus aspecting natal planet • 1-3 year episode

10) Natal planets reversing direction by progression (especially Mercury, Venus or Mars) • internalization or emergence of function of consciousness

11) Progressed Sun aspecting natal lunar nodes • life purpose wake-up call
From my client files, I will share some areas of life experience activated by secondary progressions (aspects = Q T S R ):

c) loss of interest in career • progressed Sun, midheaven or 10th house ruler aspecting natal Neptune or Pluto

Because of direct and retrograde stations, secondary progressed planets can remain within allowable orb while forming aspects to natal planets for years at a time. Progressed Mercury, for example, can remain within a 1 orb aspect to a natal planet for up to 8-10 years (8-10 days actual time). Progressed station Mercury aspecting natal
Saturn for 8-10 years running is common with individuals suffering from chronic depression for many years, and then as progressed Mercury moves out of orb, the mental positivity returns again.

My P moon is about to cross over to my Asc any day now. I can feel it already. I hate the 12th house...it was so depressing.

Peri,

I`m back with my progressions.

It seems that certain areas are more highlighted than others. I made the progressions for end of july (I bought the ticket for the Eurostar to London today, Wohoo! It means now I HAVE to go ).

1. Physical:

a) increased vialtity and Energy:
° progressed Sun square natal Uranus (0°10 a - pretty exact

° progressed Moon in 5th house (it will stay there until december)

b) increased sexual desire

° progressed 8th house ruler squares Uranus (0°10 a) - btw we look at the ruler of the 8th house in the progressed chart and not at the progressed planet that rules our natal 8th house, or do we?

° progressed Moon in 5th house

2. Emotional:

a) feelings of strength and confidence:

° progressed MOon in 5th house (this one pops up frequently

3. intellectual:

no important intellectual progressions

4. spiritual:

° strange symbolic and archetypical dreams:

- progressed Sun squares Uranus (don`t know what has to do with my dreams though)

5. Marriage:

° new love relationship

- progressed Sun squares Uranus
- progressed MOon in 5th house

6. Career:

° change in career:
progressed MC ruler (Pluto) conjunct natal Pluto (0°09 a) - Pluto is also sitting in my natal 10th house

° success in career:
- progressed Midheaven trine Jupiter (0°06 a) - Jupiter is in my natal 3rd house and pr Midheaven is in my natal 11th house

° loss of interest in career:
- progressed Midheaven ruler conjunct Pluto

I found another article. I hope you don`t mind if I post it here.

When Will You Find Love?
By Judi Thomases

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So many clients who are unattached and yearning ask the old question, “When will I find love?” It’s actually a good astrological question, and can be seen in Western astrology by many different patterns. Let’s look at some of them. Of course, the most obvious item to focus upon is Venus, the planet of love. (For “progressed”, think secondary or solar arc.)

VENUS
Progressed Venus conjunct Natal Sun (or vice versa, Progressed Sun conjunct Natal Venus) is usually the best indicator of a year when the universe throws open the doors and love walks into your life, and when you would draw another to you who has affectionate feelings for you.

This is a time in life when you would not be meant to be alone. However, the love object may not be a romantic or permanent one. My case studies reveal that, in one instance, this pattern identified the period that a child was adopted by a never-married single parent (the child being the true soul mate ), and in another, the pattern pointed to a love affair that put the final nail in a disintegrating marriage and set the individual upon an important life path…but did not result in marriage.

In the former situation, the mother also had Progressed Venus entering H7 (another obvious prognosticator) and conjuncting the Natal Part of Fortune therein, and in the latter, the relationship could be seen in retrospect as an important soul agreement though not meant to result in permanence.

Progressed Venus conjunct Progressed Sun (or vice versa, Progressed Sun conjunct Progressed Venus) is very similar in nature, as would be Progressed Venus conjunct ruler of H7. In the latter case, the nature of the planet acting as ruler would greatly influence the type of relationship formed. For example, if Saturn, possibly an older or serious partner; if Mercury, a younger or friendly type.

Likewise, Progressed Venus conjunct Sun/ or Moon/Descendant midpoint, Progressed Sun conjunct Venus/Descendant midpoint, or Progressed Ascendant or Descendant conjunct Sun/ Venus midpoint would also be good indicators of a period in the life-clock during which a loved one might appear. (My observation is that this quest for love isn’t really just about romance, because that’s not always lasting. The real issue seems to be about permanence in love – that is, marriage or a long-lasting relationship – so I’ll focus upon H7 rather than H5.)

Conversely, Progressed Sun conjunct Venus/Ascendant midpoint might signal a love relationship (depending on the rulerships of the Sun or Venus), but might just as easily indicate a period of comfort, self-love and personal beautification. For those who work with declinations, similar indicators would also been seen by Sun/Venus, Venus/Ascendant or Venus/MC parallels.

Of course, should any of these delightful aspects occur at a very young age, their benefits will be pretty much wasted in terms of long-term attachments, but there are stories of youngsters bonding with a friend or neighbor who later becomes their true love…or at least their lifelong buddy.

A Venusian progression to itself – that is, Progressed Venus conjunct Natal Venus – can only occur when the Natal Venus is retrograde at birth, and then turns direct during the lifetime, or when a Natal (direct) Venus turns retrograde. And since Venus’ retrograde lasts about 43 days (thus, 43 years by progression), being born closest to its stationing would best ensure enough time for this return to occur.

Such a period will emphasize the nature of Venus’ natal significance at the same time that it brings its Venusian qualities to the forefront. If natally well-aspected, happiness can be brought forward; if afflicted, financial, romantic, or indulgency problems can be emphasized.

OTHER PATTERNS

But besides these obvious involvements of Venus, there are other conducive patterns as well. Slightly less obvious are: Whenever the angles are involved with Venus or H7, there is a good chance of love appearing in one’s life, such as Progressed Ascendant/Descendant strongly aspecting Natal or Progressed Venus or ruler of H7, usually a positive signal for marriage, or Progressed MC strongly aspecting Natal or Progressed Venus or ruler of H7, another great time for love, even if the aspects are hard (because, after all, how hard can a Venus aspect be?). In fact, either of these would be wonderful to schedule a wedding around, as would Progressed ruler of H7 strongly aspecting Natal or Progressed Venus. Even a less obvious aspect, such as Ruler of H7 in a feasible aspect to an angle or a love-connected planet, might predispose to a marriage-type energy.

A Progressed Venus in major aspect to Natal Neptune is frequently found at times of romantic events such as weddings, but tends to glamorize the emotions and cloud the reality of the relationship. Such unions will face greater-than-usual trials regarding the longevity of the marriage, but can certainly survive the progression if an effort is made after its passage to deal with the less-than-ideal characteristics of the partner that would then be revealed.

Then there are indicators for relationship that just generally emphasize its potential, such as Progressed Moon into Libra or H7, or Progressed planets into H7, or even the Involvement of the Vertex when found in H7. (The Vertex, normally found in Houses 5-8, by my observation works as a fulcrum around which key events are shaped; thus, if in H7, key partnerships will be accented when the Vertex is activated.)

If the natal chart has planets in H7, progressions or outer planet transits to them will certainly accentuate relationships (but such horoscopes will always be dealing with partners – or consequences of the lack thereof – as that was part of the life plan).

Venus-Moon patterns often result in an individual’s general contentment, but do not necessarily show romantic involvement; sometimes they signal the birth of children.

In regards to harmony in a relationship once formed, look to one partner’s Progressed Venus tracking another’s Progressed Sun, and vice versa, or both Progressed Venuses tracking each other (a situation not always shown by conjunctions between comparative Venuses in the natal charts, since this occurrence will be determined by the age difference between the two individuals as well as their natal patterns).

Of course, the topic of synastry is a separate one, to be applied after a relationship has been formed in order to analyze the positive and negative potential between the two horoscopes, and so does not fall into the parameters of this article.

LESS LIKELY TO BE PERMANENT

Finally, there are patterns that might spark love, but offer the least long-term assurance of permanence:

Transiting outer planets conjunct Natal or Progressed Venus or ruler of H7 will play up the qualities of these planets, but can be unpleasant or fleeting just as easily as the opposite, depending upon the meaning of the transiting planet or the natal potential of the transited planet.

For example, Uranus over Venus might lend an exciting but impermanent love experience while Saturn could be either restrictive or serious.

Neptune would probably cause delusional fantasies about the partner or bring a weak or compromised person into one’s life whom one would wish to rescue.

And Pluto, of course, would likely offer a powerfully transformative experience that could alter one’s approach to sex, love or money forever!

Transiting outer planets into H7, on the other hand, would likely highlight the need to deal closely with others, but far less likely, the arrival of love.

A FALSE FEAR

Anyone who trusts in the truths of astrology should discard forever the fear that aging ruins your chances for love. It’s a myth.

For example, I had a 70-year-old female client, an artist, who found a suitor when her Progressed Sun was sextile her Ascendant while her Progressed Venus was opposite her Moon, and his Progressed Venus was trine his Neptune, crossing his South Node. (The latter pattern shows a love-connection from prior lifetimes.)

Once meant to occur (by any of these afore- mentioned patterns), the universe will go to great lengths to put two people together. People will meet “accidentally” or on distant trips to places they will never revisit, or will be introduced by a third party who will never again appear in either of their lives.

Coincidence or synchronicity will abound, and the non-astrologer will remain amazed by such “luck,” whereas the astrologer will nod knowingly as the Divine Plan is revealed through cosmic mathematics.

When one of these patterns kicks into your chart, you’ll watch the door of love open wide in your heart. But it will be up to you to keep its flame kindled thereafter.

One caveat, though: as I said before, Venus symbolizes love, not necessarily between two romantic partners.

I have several examples in my files in which one of these patterns brought a soul-mate into the life in the form of a beloved child.

Venus can also symbolize pleasure and financial wellbeing. The right match can even bring pleasant financial conditions along with love (such as marrying well), if the horoscope predisposes. But if the natal chart doesn’t do so, then positive Venusian aspects will bring other types of love (such as the above-mentioned never-married adopter whose difficult Natal Sagittarius Sun/Moon/Saturn t-square precluded marital possibilities in the incarnation).

CASE STUDIES

Some case studies of Venusian patterns revealing strong love-based events in my files are as follows:

Forty-six-year-old widow meets second spouse – Progressed Sun semi-sextile progressed Venus, and Progressed Moon into H7.

Seventy-year-old-female is courted – Progressed Sun sextile Ascendant, and Progressed Venus opposite Moon.

Divorced female meets second spouse – He: Progressed Venus conjunct Sun; Her: Transiting Uranus conjunct Venus, and Progressed Moon in Libra.

Life-changing affair for female: Progressed Venus conjunct Sun.

First marriage for young eligible bachelor – Progressed Venus sextile Ascendant, and sextile Node; Progressed Moon into H7.

Peri,

I highlighted the actual connections to look for, so it`s easier to have a look.

Even though I slightly disagree with her in leaving out the 5th house; I think a 5th house romance, even though not as serious as a 7th house involvement, can feel delicious.
Actually I really really like my progressed Taurus Moon in my 5th house, and funny next month transiting Venus and Mars will move over it, too.

On 21st june my progressed Moon will be on 14°10 Taurus and Transiting Venus will be on 14°41 Taurus and Transiting Mars will be on 14°52 Taurus, all in my 5th house.
I wonder if that date might be significant. And if so, what COULD it signify?

EDIT:
Isn`t it strange that I noticed that just the exact moment Moon is on 14 Scorpio?

Nope, not really.

I have asteroid Siva on 14 - 15 Scorpio, though, as well as Moira on 14 - 15 Scorpio and Lancelot on 16 - 17 Scorpio and Eurydike on 15 - 16 Scorpio

OH MY....

Following a hunch I looked up asteroid London and it is on 14.21 Scorpio.
Now I guess I am really meant to go to London. lol
But I`ll be there a month later.

Oh and I forgot my progressed Saturn is on 14 - 15 Cancer currently.

EDIT:
How itneresting, by the time I get to London transiting Lancelot will be conjunct my ASC and True Node and Transit London will be exactly trine my Venus (orb is 0.00!) and conjunct my Part of Marriage, asteroid actor and Eros - Psyche-midpoint.

Hmm, does that mean I`m going to meet a real knight?

WRite,

you met Mr Blashke?

Well, I have that one book of him about relationship astrology, and at first I didn´t "find my way into it", but then all at once I did, and I have been reading it again and again since then and still am finding really precious new ideas in there. I love that about books, if they are like treasure boxes.
