Weekly Weather, September 28, 2009 Last week, we talked about Saturn getting ready to square Pluto. This week, we’re going to take you on a little trip down memory lane so you can anticipate what this next year’s journey will be about.
Dane Rudhyar wrote about the phases of the moon. The phases apply to every planetary cycle. When any planet joins another, you make the slower planet be the base and you take the faster moving planet and send it around the circle of the zodiac. You watch the aspect patterns that the faster moving planet makes to the slower moving planet. You note the nature of the two planets. You note where they live by house natally. And, you note where they are transiting in your chart by house. And last but not least, you notice the houses that the planets rule in the natal chart. The combination of these five elements is how you anticipate what the story will be about.
When a planet joins a planet, the two begin a story or a marriage. We call it a conjunction. The union of the two planets by sign describes what the purpose of the marriage is for. The two planets themselves describe what the characters in the marriage are going to do with each other and you.
When Saturn and Pluto join, Saturn, the Lord of Karma, structure and the purpose of our lives, meets with Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, death, transformation and birth. So essentially, our life will go through an important transformation, a loss, a psychological understanding, and a rebirth. The faster moving planet continues to move around the circle of the zodiac. As it moves, it makes aspects back to the slower moving planet and tells it things, helping all of us grow and evolve.
When the faster moving planet gets to 90 degrees, Dane Rudhyar called it an “opening square of crisis”. That means the planets ask you to do something different, to look at the situations in your life and decide what the story is and how you want to handle it. You have a period of time to make the adjustments.
The fast moving planet continues to move and eventually reaches the opposition, where you can stand and look at the changes in your life and look at them as two parts - an opportunity to change and a willingness to link up two apparent polarities standing from opposite sides of the zodiac. They shout at you to make a choice. But your job is to understand how they are connected and to pull them together. At the opposition, a change is almost mandated. The source of the change comes from seeing the two sides clearly and knowing what your path is.
The cycle continues until we come to the closing square, which is 270 degrees from the initial joining, which is according to Rudhyar, the “crisis of consciousness.” At this point, the planets ask you to look at the situations that happened at the conjunction, the opening square, and the opposition and they ask you to link those aspects, to understand what the Universe was trying to show you and integrate them into your consciousness. You take those three stories and look at the connecting pieces to integrate them so you can come up with the psychological conclusion and hoped for consciousness. The whole point of the cycle is for you to start something, change it, see it clearly, understand its purpose, and start something again.
If you think about plants and a garden, every year you plant tomatoes. And every year, the tomatoes bloom and grow, ripen, ask us to harvest them, and then die. You are always offered the opportunity when Spring comes again to plant more tomatoes, less tomatoes or something else entirely, based on your experience growing tomatoes.
When we’re in the crisis of consciousness phase, we have the opportunity to change the structure again, but more importantly, to psychologically recognize what the crisis says to us about the events that happened before. The focus of the crisis of consciousness is to understand how the earlier events led to this moment, created it even. YOU CAN STILL CHANGE IT. The more important task is to understand psychologically what is going on and what it means and to integrate it into your evolution. It offers you the opportunity to grow psychologically and intellectually as you transform.
Saturn and Pluto are two of our least favorite planets when aspecting each other! Inevitably, when they aspect each other, some structure of Saturn’s is permanently changed by Pluto. We can never go back to our life the way it was before. Our vision is permanently altered. We see the world with different eyes.
In November of 1982, Saturn joined with Pluto in the sign of Libra or the sign of relationships. An important relationship in our life was permanently altered in the house ruled by Libra in our natal charts. In 1993-94, Saturn was in Aquarius, and Pluto was in Scorpio as they squared each other, creating a crisis of action in the houses of our charts ruled by Aquarius and Scorpio. Saturn in Aquarius taught us about our groups, our community and our beliefs about things, as we watched them be destroyed or transformed by Pluto in Scorpio’s relentless power. The change in structure in our Aquarian house was permanent and life-altering as we faced the inevitable death and rebirth promised by Pluto in Scorpio. The crisis of change was on us. But we also have to relate back to the story from 1982. Tie the story from 1994 to 1982. What is the common element?
In 2001, Saturn was in Gemini and Pluto was in Sagittarius, fighting across the sky. Their fight caused an irreparable loss of a structure in our lives that we believed in. The loss happened in the Gemini area of our chart. Pluto in Sagittarius across the sky destroyed or transformed our childish beliefs, asking us to see the world with a bigger vision. Pluto sought to teach us a lesson about our structures, siblings, communications and our youthful thoughts. The crisis of visioning, or seeing, was on us. Think about the structures that changed in your life in 2001, never to be replaced, and how they are related to the structures that changed in 1994 and 1982.
Now we move forward into the first of three squares, asking us to look at the relationship again with Saturn as transformed by the physical reality of Pluto. This time, our job is to psychologically review the earlier changes to the structures in our life, obtain a new vision of them, or a new understanding of them, and realize what they meant to us. And knowing that, we can move forward with confidence to apply ourselves to the job of understanding and becoming conscious. I find closing squares are the easiest because they help us see things and create a new understanding or new reality from our experiences. Because the consciousness required asks us to look at it in a new way, we may see things that are actually very scary to us. But the scary things are asking us to see things from a higher perspective, the soul’s understanding, of what our journey needs.
Your soul incarnated in this life to have experiences on earth, both good and bad. Often, the Saturn/Pluto experiences are the harder ones, the things we label ‘bad’. But from them, we get many things: Awareness of the preciousness of life. Realization of the gifts of our body and being. Appreciation for the things we love and cherish. Recognition for how fragile those things are. Understanding of the importance of love in our life. The ability to understand that even though life is hard, there are wonderful gifts within it. And last but not least, that everything ends. There is a winter in our life and winter can be harsh. We’re asked to see things with a new set of eyes, on a whole different level, so we can fully actualize our humanity in this lifetime.
So we know Saturn and Pluto have a range from good to bad. When they fight, it leans more towards the bad side of their natures. And trying to be friendly with Saturn and Pluto is like trying to hang out with a mugger and a killer, hoping they’ll never do it again, but knowing that it is part of their nature. They’ve done it before. Which means they might do it again. Or, they might not. But the potential is there. That said, you’re smarter now. You know they can mug and kill. You know that that’s part of their bag of tricks. So, forewarned is forearmed. When you see it coming, you move. Or you duck. Or you mace them. Or you fight back. Or you call the police. Or you ask your friends for help. Or you make different choices. You take whatever steps you can to help yourself.
That’s why the closing square of Saturn and Pluto is called psychological integration. You’ve been around the block and you understand what you have to do. You also aren’t young and naïve anymore. You’ve seen the darker side of human nature. You know it exists. Yet, you also recognize there’s a reason for it. There is a source for it. That doesn’t mean you let the bad behavior continue. You set appropriate boundaries and protect yourself.
The mugger is going to be in your relationship house, the house ruled by Libra. Saturn, in the mugger form, is going to be in your Libra house. He’s going to try to mug your boundaries. Your job is to keep them in place. He is going to be asking you to have boundaries and structures. You have to respect and honor the boundaries and structures that he wants to put into relationships and to enforce your own boundaries. Saturn in Libra is going to ask you to make sure things are balanced and fair, no one side winning all, no one side losing all. Saturn in Libra is about compromise in relationships and partnerships, as well as open enemies and legal battles.
Saturn in Libra asks you to act in a responsible way - whatever you wouldn’t want done to you, don’t do to another. Don’t wish it on them. Instead of wishing ill on someone, saying ‘they’re so mean, yada yada, yada,’ - wish what you would want done to you. If you don’t want your money stolen, don’t steal theirs. And if they steal your money, don’t wish ill upon them. Wish for them to have “the experience of balancing” that.
My friend Peggy had a lawyer steal money from her in a completely legal manner. He did something most lawyers don’t do, but nothing barred him from doing it. Peggy was in a car accident and by all rights, should have received some compensation. She received nothing. After the lawyer screwed up and lost her case, he hit her up for expenses. He sued her. He won $40,000. Peggy paid the money, but she also wished for balancing. Was this an injustice or a past-life karmic debt? Peggy wasn’t sure. So she wished for balancing. If this was an injustice, that it be balanced in some manner. And if it wasn’t an injustice, that she be balanced and feel relieved from being screwed. The lawyer came down with a case of tinnitus, which is literally a disorder of the inner ear. He lost his balance. He couldn’t walk. Therefore, due to his loss of balance, he couldn’t work for several months. It probably cost him about $40,000 worth of billing. Balance was achieved. Peggy processed this information and it made her feel balanced.
When you’re facing problems under the upcoming Saturn square Pluto, ask Saturn in Libra to balance the situation. And if there is an adjustment on your side where you feel you’ve lost, ask Saturn in Libra to help you feel better about it because the whole point of Saturn in Libra is to feel balanced.
Pluto in Capricorn is the killer. He wants to kill the things we want that don’t serve us. He wants us to transform what we’ve built, who we are, what we value, what we think of as achievement. He wants us to see what achievement is in our own eyes, not the achievement that is measured by society, or our father, or our friends, or our siblings. What is OUR measure of achievement? What do WE think is important? If it’s a false measure of achievement that we’re using to say we are successful, Pluto will kill it off.
Pluto’s job is to make sure you are in your purest form. Pluto will ask us to look at our relationships to power as he talks to Saturn in the sign of balance. Pluto will balance that relationship to power. The aspect between Saturn and Pluto will balance injustices in power as Saturn and Pluto talk to each other over the next year. The idea is to be in right relationship with things intellectually, psychologically, emotionally and physically. Where things are out of balance, those areas will be corrected.
As Saturn and Pluto both represent time and space, the balancing may be from a previous lifetime. And if that’s the case, and you can see no justification for it in your current lifetime, imagine a story that supports that balancing so you can psychologically understand its origins and appreciate it for the balancing taking place. In the same way that our bodies absorb nutrients and seek to maintain a balance, our lives across time and space also seek to maintain a balance. Saturn square Pluto is a balancing time, where adjustments will be made, changes to the karma across time and space will take place, and the effects will be apparent in our current life. To anticipate what these changes are for, look at where natal Saturn lives in your chart, natal Pluto lives in your chart, and houses ruled by Capricorn and Libra.
You should have heard the beginning of the story last week or this week, as the Sun came to square Pluto, carrying the message. That’s the story you are going to be working with for the next year, to balance and restructure, and to come to a psychological understanding of what’s required of you and the other people involved. The week ahead promises to be interesting, as Mercury has a number of aspects and stations to go forward. Mercury has been retrograde for the past month. Most importantly, he’s activating the last couple weeks of August 2009. When he goes forward on Tuesday, he’ll pass over Uranus and Saturn for the third time, and then move forward to go talk to Pluto. The story from mid-August until now is the story you’ll be working with in the year ahead.
Mercury in Virgo loves the details and notices everything. Make sure on the Mercury station on Tuesday as well as in the week ahead, to note all the stuff that happens as it’s all tied to the journey you’ll be working on in the next year. Mercury is going to be passing over the points of Saturn and Pluto’s conversations. Mercury is giving you a foretaste of what Saturn and Pluto are going to be “fixing” in the months ahead. Look at what has gone on in your life from August 17th to now. Include this weekend and next week. That’s the focus of the upcoming year’s Saturn/Pluto square.
Mercury was the only god who could go into the underworld and remain unchanged. In his role as the observer of your life, this week ahead and next week too, he’ll make important connections for you as he links up these energies for the third time. Mercury gives information without judging it. Take in the information that Mercury gives you. Try not to judge it. Try to just take it in as facts or data points. You’re going to decide what you want to do with it later. You don’t have enough information yet to make firm decisions. The tendency will be to judge and then pick facts supporting the judgment.
Pretend you are on a jury and you have to wait until all the evidence is presented before you draw a conclusion. Just listen and pay attention, don’t take action. You do have information but not enough. Let Mercury complete the journey through his shadow which ends on October 15th. At that point, you’ll have enough information to know what you want to do. On October 15th, sit down for a talk with yourself about all the information you’ve gathered since August 17th, so then you can figure out what you now want to do.
Mars has a number of aspects with the Gang of Three (Jupiter, Neptune, and Chiron in Aquarius), and Uranus in Pisces. We’ll be wanting to take action, even if we don’t know where we are going. Mars needs to adjust what he’s doing behaviorally. He has to change how he’s acting around his dream. When he does that, that minor shift changes everything. Instead of looking at your dream as, ‘It has to be this way or else’ - be open to the possibilities. Say to your dream, “I wonder how this dream can happen”, rather than insisting on how it must happen. Give your dream space to talk to you, rather than bossing it around with your Mars.
Pallas Athena changes signs into Libra, so we’ll see things in a more balanced way as she enters her favorite sign of cardinal air. The nodes are active, bringing you connections and information for your journey ahead.
Monday, Moon is in Aquarius with excellent closing aspects to Mercury for the next two days. Great time to organize, assess, gather data, revisit, get the 20,000 ft. view, develop the master plan. Moon in Aquarius offers the ability to detach and sides with the Gang of Three, activating your dream, your vision, your hope of what can happen. Give those hopes room to soar! Let them fly, recognizing that they are still tied to you. They are your dreams! Mercury in Virgo is arguing with Chiron, suggesting that there is a wounding around your vision. Ask Mercury to partner with a higher vision of what things can be, rather than the lower form. Do a Peggy! Envision the higher purpose of a situation, rather than focusing on the difficult form in front of you. Do a Peggy. Ask for the situation to be balanced and for you to be given understanding about the reason for the situation. Remember, you don’t have all the data. Write a fake story in your brain and come up with a pattern that helps you understand it.
Tuesday, Moon in Aquarius, Mercury stations. Again, the Lord of Communication is talking to you yesterday, today, and tomorrow. There is a creation desire that was part of your dreams last night. Take some steps towards that today as Mercury stops in the sky. Relationships can change today, as Saturn opposed Juno. You can see them in a whole new light and you may not like what you see. Again, remember they’re working out their stuff too. You have them in your life to work out your stuff. News of relationships ending is part of the day’s information. The relationships are ending to move you to a new position or new place, so it’s not bad news, it’s just news of change. Again, don’t judge it. You don’t have enough information yet to judge it. All the evidence isn’t in yet. Changes around the home are likely or where ever you feel safe.
Wednesday features a long void moon. Remember, we’re going to have a lot of void moons in the months ahead. Your job on a long void moon is to process the events of the previous days and integrate them. Similar to sleep, void moons are when the moon ceases functioning and allows the events of the world to settle into consciousness. While you sleep at night, your mind is busy sorting and collating the events of the day - processing them, storing them, filing them. Void moons do the same function. You’re supposed to process the events of the last few days while doing mundane routine tasks so you can properly file, process, and sort them. So, today is a day of dreams for the moon. The moon doesn’t want to function well because it wants you doing different work mentally.
Wednesday also has Mercury and Mars both fighting with Chiron, making a fast moving Finger of God that can cause permanent changes in your world. Chiron in Aquarius is going to ask you to adjust your vision of your wound and take a different kind of action than you normally would. Remember, the Universe is seeking to make you conscious now. So, if you usually do ABC, you probably should not do that. You should probably do something else than your normal usual response to the stimulus of Chiron. Venus is going to have stress with relationships today. You need to take action to relieve the stress and move forward. Don’t do your usual action. Take a look at it, take a higher form of it, come up with something different.
Thursday, Moon in Pisces has hard closing aspects to Saturn, offering an emotional separation of sorts. Some lie or deceit will be revealed today. Again, gather the information. They might not actually mean to lie. They may be deceiving themselves too, but they are not telling the truth. Look very carefully at the source of the untruth. That’s the thing to watch. The source of the untruth is where the change needs to take place. Either how you react to it, or how it reacts to you, that’s the locus of change. That’s what the Universe wants you to get conscious about. Again, we’re looking at the year ahead. These days, while they seem insignificant, will be really important as the year unfolds. This is the whole seeding of the story.
Because Mars is in Cancer, this can be a lie of omission, as opposed to commission. Having been raised a Catholic, lies of omission were actually worse than commission. With omission, you’re leaving out something really important that would totally change the situation from the other person’s point of view. You are consciously lying as well as seeking to deceive them. As opposed to a commission lie, where you are just lying, omission lies are malice of forethought, kind of pre-meditated lies. The penalties are worse when things are pre-meditated. Smell. Smell the story. Does it smell right? What’s the part that is missing? Whatever part is nagging you, follow that to find the truth.
Friday, Moon in Pisces gets clear even if it doesn’t want to see it. Pisces is a highly psychic sign, so when the Moon is in Pisces, the gut and instincts are heightened. The hairs on the back of your neck are up. There is a attunement to the universal forces. Pay attention to that today. Whatever that action is that feels disruptive or out of place, note it and understand that it is to point you back to the lie earlier in the week. It’s job is to help you understand the energy.
With Saturn in the sign of Virgo, there is an awareness that there is a puzzle piece missing. Look for the flaw. Look for the space that’s missing. Find the change in the pattern. Find the flaw. That’s the space to pay attention to. Today, you may be shocked. One of the things that happens when the Universe is trying to get your attention, is that it creates a diversion so that you pay attention. Like a pickpocket, while you’re paying attention to the diversion, something is happening behind the scenes. Don’t just pay attention today. Pay attention to what is going on BESIDES the diversion. The diversion is to draw your attention away from the real action. Focus on the real action. Keep your eye on the ball.
Saturday, pay attention to your dreams. Pay attention to where your mind takes you. Pallas Athena enters a new sign, Libra. There is a deep connection around partners and learning how to see partners and patterns within them. There will be a new idea. The idea is really brilliant. Especially watch if the idea comes from a young person, a teacher or a really wise person. Make sure to do something with that idea.
Sunday is a busy day. Read the full moon column on this site for more information on how to work with the energy. Mercury is especially active today. Look back to the events of the week for the A-ha! moment, the Oh-my-God-I-never-realized-that! moment, the Holy cow! moment and the That-person-lied-to-me! moment. Note them all. Sit in it. Pay attention to it. Write it down. Connect the dots. See where the lies were necessary. Don’t take the lies or information personally. See the reason why the lies were offered - to help you get where you are now. Now that you see their purpose, you can proceed with the rest of your life, understanding that the lies got you to where you are. Sometimes when people lie, they do so to hide things because they are ashamed or afraid. And other times, they lie to deceive. It doesn’t really matter why they lied, does it?
In this case, the lie was to help you see something that you needed to see. So thank them for their lie or untruth and use it to fuel your path forward. If you look, there is an open door that you are supposed to go through. It’s not where you thought you would go, it’s not how you thought it would happen, but there is a door open.
Just look around, there’s an open door somewhere. Go through that open door. The dream is still there, it’s just not with this person. The dream is still good, it’s just not in the form you thought it was going to be in. Doesn’t make it a bad dream. It just is different than you thought it would be. Follow the dream! See it clearly and go through the open door, in a different direction than you thought you were going to go.
Mundane:
The U.N. agreements on climate and financial changes, the reprimand to Iran about its nuclear facilities, and the G20 Summit all take place during Mercury retrograde. That means we can expect that the things will all reverse or change in the months ahead. However, we will still be working with these things as Mercury is showing us where Saturn and Pluto will be asking us to spend our time politically. In 1982, when Saturn joined with Pluto in Libra, we had the Iran-Contra story. We were covertly selling arms to Iran for their war with Iraq. Hearing France, England, and the United States condemn Iran for its nuclear program gave this astrologer a sinking feeling in her stomach, especially as the due date for compliance was between the first two Saturn/Pluto squares. I anticipate we won’t have a peaceful settlement (Mercury is retrograde) to Iran’s nuclear program. When Mercury goes direct, the “peaceful” warning will become more war-like. Saturn/Pluto aspects are often about wars.
On a positive note, the capture of the 24-year-old crazy person who wanted to blow up the New York City subways with hair lightener and nail polish remover (who knew you could make a bomb out of that? Makes me think twice about getting my hair lightened or my next mani/pedi!) was the psychological recognition of our vulnerability even as the arrests were announced. Backpacks with nail polish bombs seem a bit farfetched, but are apparently a reality. The good news - it was averted. The bad news - we get to realize what a scary world we sometimes live in.
The stock market continues to wobble. Many of the astrologers at the ISAR conference anticipated a major drop in the markets once Mercury goes direct, i.e. in October. Gold should go up, markets should go down. Commercial real estate will crash or collapse with the Saturn/Pluto square in the 11 months ahead. Pluto in Capricorn - business, earth, buildings. Saturn in Libra -partnerships in the outside world. We should see the bottom of the housing market in the next month as Saturn finishes Virgo.
